CELEBRATE CLERGY APPRECIATION MONTH IN OCTOBER - October is Clergy Appreciation Month and the perfect time to commit to praying for and encouraging our Pastor and Ministry staff on a regular basis. God's word calls us to support clergy. In 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 we are told: "Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other." (NIV). YOU'RE WELCOME TO JOIN US on October 17 from 6:30 - 8:00pm for an informative presentation by Lieutenant Colonel Rodney Green (retired). Rod will demonstrate the things he carried as an Army paratrooper and platoon sergeant during the Vietnam War. He has made this presentation for the past 8 years at SFC and more recently in Piedmont, SD. Many who heard about this presentation expressed interest, so we want to give all interested parties an opportunity to participate. Please join us in the fellowship hall as we learn more about this historic time in our nation's past. Questions--contact Rose or Ed Ligtenberg, 321-4515 or 906-3475. TRUNK OR TREAT is back!! We had such a wonderful turnout at last year’s event that we can’t wait for this year. If you are not familiar with the event, Trunk or Treat is a fun and safe alternative to trick or treating. Members of our church will decorate their vehicle trunks in different themes and provide candy for the kids who attend. This event will be held on Saturday, October 28, from 4-6pm in the parking lot of Shalom. We will also have face painting, games, a photo booth, and food. There are a couple different ways to get involved: DECORATE YOUR TRUNK – We had 17 trunks last year, this year our goal is to have 25 trunks. So we need your help! If you need ideas, we are more than willing to help you out! DONATE – click here to find a list of all the different things you can donate: https://goo.gl/kq3bqh HELP – we will need help with set up, games, taking pictures, and various other ways. If you would like to help in any of these areas, please talk to any of the Shalom staff. We want to thank everyone for your prayers and other expressions of care. I am scheduled to begin treatment at the Dattoli Cancer Center in Sarasota, FL early October. We covet your continuing prayers as we travel this journey. -- Ken & Bette Venhuizen

KID ZONE

October 1 - PreK-1st will meet in the triple room (southeast corner of fellowship hall) and 2nd-5th grade will meet downstairs. Remember, please pick up your child(ren) upstairs at 11:10 and downstairs at 11:15.

October 8 – NO KID ZONE

October 15 – PreK-1st will meet in the triple room and 2nd-5th will meet downstairs. CHILDREN & WORSHIP

Parents, there will be an open house this Sunday, October 1 during the Children and Worship time for you to come observe, worship, and learn what your role is as a greeter. If this is your first time, or if you have any questions about being a greeter please attend the open house.

GEMS

September 27 – First day of GEMS PARKING ISSUES – Due to an increase in Sunday service attendance during this time of year, our parking lot is overflowing. Our goal is to keep some parking spots close to door available for our guests, families with small children, and our senior members. If you are able, please consider parking either on the street east of church or in the parking lot west across the street. When doing so, remember to cross Southeastern at the corner intersection for safety. If you are parking in the Shalom parking lot on the east side of church, please pull forward to fill the inner row of spaces first. We thank you for your understanding and help with this—it’s a good problem to have! PARENTS – Please monitor your children! We have had an increase in damaged church property by the misbehavior of some. There should be no “wild” running in the fellowship hall and the sanctuary after church. Children should not enter rooms that are locked or areas not being used. Remind your children that they are at church, and they should treat and respect the building and our members appropriately. FREE / YOU HAUL – the welcome center and kiosk to someone who could use them.

SHALOM MISSION TRIP - The Outreach team would like to invite you to consider participating in a trip to Mission Haiti! We want to send a group of up to 18 individuals to support them in their work and ministry. The trip will be from January 12-19, 2018 with travel days yet to be determined. You will have an opportunity to build relationships, see the site of the new school that is being sponsored by Shalom, and help Mission-Haiti with any current projects. Shalom will cover all expenses, but donations to offset costs are welcomed. Please speak to Kristin DeWeerd if you have any questions, or to any member of the Outreach Team if you are interested: Wendy Aasen, John DeJong, Danielle Dykstra, Adam Hofer, Brady Lieuwen, Ed Ligtenberg, Scott Vanden Bosch (elder), and Chris Dieleman (deacon

FRIENDSHIP UPDATE - Our God is faithful and he has provided in an amazing way! Please know that as members of Shalom, you are always welcomed to come and worship with us on Monday evenings from 7-8 pm. It is one way you can participate in the body of Christ and learn to love our Friends with special abilities. We hope to set up tables on Sunday mornings after coffee time, so if you are still around and see that happening, join in and lend a hand! Thank you.
