SEPTEMBER 2015
Greetings
Dear Parents and Caregivers, It has been a very good term here at Shalom. Three weeks into the term the school roll was 304 and this has steadily climbed to 320 as of the end of term. The term saw a continuants of the many positive opportunities that Shalom offers to students. Sports: The “North Queensland Cowboys” Try-Time continued to operate where members of the NQ Cowboys NRL team came to Shalom and participated in sporting and classroom activities with students. The students performed very well at the Interschool Athletics. Particular mention goes to students Tegan Doomadgee, Arthur Delta and Lance Hudson. The young men's program continues as it give confidence and respect to our young men. We conducted our year 12 educational assessments. Members of the schools chooky dancers group paid their annual visit to Palm Island where they shared their culture through dance at the Spring Festival Palm Island. Congratulations to a past student Deanne Sibley who has been selected to attend the women's light weight under 20 boxing title competition. Two members of the school board and I paid a visit (after being invited) to communities in the Central Desert. This was a very good trip and further enhanced the relationship between the school and these communities. The term concluded with the schools celebration of NAIDOC. We were blessed with an abundance of joy on this day. Students showed all their culture in the form of dance and music. It was great to see such talent, your children are indeed gifted. We had performances from a number of groups in the school, Wulguru and Cranbrook Schools and the Salt Water Band from Elcho Island. We were very grateful to these young men and to all our visitors and parents who shared the date and the Kup Murri lunch. May God continue to bless you and your children. Regards, Chris England Principal

Woorabinda Visit Report by Jodi McLean
Wednesday 19th August 2015
Attended: Jodi McLean (Registrar) and Katrina Booth (Teachers Assistant)
The Department of Human Services hosted the second “Get Started for
High School Information Session” for 2015. Being held at the
Woorabinda State School we had the year 6 students attend along with
some parents and families.
The Smith Family who we already have 3 of their children attending will
have their 4th child, Ethan come to Shalom in 2016. Ethan is very keen
and excited to be coming to Shalom. It is great to have all of the Smith
children attend and complete their education with us at Shalom.
Anita Daisy the mother of the Smith students came to see us again as she
does each time we are in the community. Anita’s daughter Lydia will be
graduating year 12 this year which is a great achievement.
We met with Charlene Mann from the Darumbal Community Youth
Services based in Rockhampton. Charlene said that they would like to start
working with and supporting Shalom to assist with enrolling students and
getting students on travel rom the CQ region.
BULLA COMMUNITY VISIT
We chartered a plane from Katherine out to the Bulla Community
to spend the day. This is the 1st visit Shalom has had to the Bulla
Community and School. Bulla Community is 170km from
Kununurra, 340km from Katherine and 60km from Timber Creek
just off the Victoria Highway. Bulla Community was once a part
of the Auvergne Station.
Jess Robinson is the Teaching Principal at the School and is very
supportive of the families and Shalom.
We met with the family of 2 students who are keen to come to
Shalom. It was good to meet with staff at the school and some of
the families in Bulla.
Royal Darwin Show, Peppimenarti, Katherine, Binjari, Numbulwar and Bulla Community Trip Report
by Jodi McLean
Wednesday 22nd – Friday 31st July 2015
DARWIN SHOW
Shalom Christian College again held a stand at the Royal Darwin Show which
was a great success. Our stand displayed a large number of photos of our past
and present students succeeding in sport, education and graduation.
It was great to have some of our current students come and see us along with a
number of ex-students.
We received a positive number of enquiries about the College, year levels,
subjects offered, boarding eligibility, student discipline, activities and sports
offered and opportunities.
PEPPIMENARTI COMMUNITY VISIT
On Monday 27th July we spent the day at the
Peppimenarti School hosted by the Principal Sue
Paul and speaking with students, parents and
families.
Paula Parry assisted with collecting parents and
students to come and meet with us which was
great help and much appreciated.
BINJARI COMMUNITY VISIT
From Peppimenarti we drove to Katherine and out to Binjari Community. We visited Rita Brumby the grandmother/guardian
for a number of our students from this community. Shalom has a good friendship with Rita and enjoy visiting her each year.
Rita gave Jodi a gift that was a lovely gesture. While in the community we met with 3 students and their families to complete
enrolment applications that are keen to commence with us in the near future.
NUMBULWAR COMMUNITY VISIT
We chartered a plane from Katherine to Numbulwar for the day. We have a very strong bond with Numbulwar, it’s students,
families and community services departments. We were based at the Shire Services Office which
is central to the shop, school, clinic and banking office making us more accessible to the families
and community people. The families really enjoy and appreciate our visit each year which is
evident in the number of applications we receive each time we visit Numbulwar.
As our current students were still in community due to sorry business most of them came to see us
and invited us to watch them play basketball after school. This was a great opportunity for us to be
out socialising with the student and families in their community and we really enjoyed this.
We spoke with the Shire Services Manager Roger about the Government project of sealing the
road from the airstrip to the community which is long overdue. During the wet season it can at times be impossible to get
from the community to the airstrip due to flooding and the condition of the dirt road. The Government has approved the
$1.3 million project that has now commenced and is due to be completed by late October 2015. Part of the conditions of the
contract is that a number of the local indigenous people had to be employed on the product. Roger was very pleased that the
company employed 8 of the local people to work alongside 10 people flown in from Darwin. A great win for the Numbulwar
Community.
It is always a pleasure to visit the Numbulwar Community with excellent results achieved.

AFL Gala Day
AFL Townsville ran a Secondary Schools Youth Girls
(13-18) AFL Gala Day on Tuesday 11 August at the
Murray Sporting Complex. Shalom took 51 girls to
compete in the U15 and Open divisions. The format
of the day was to be 12 a-side, however due to
Shalom’s great turnout and sportsmanship our girls
volunteered to assist the other schools and increase
numbers to 18 v 18. This was great to see and lots of
laughter was heard throughout the day. The opens side
remained unbeaten throughout the day to retain their title and the 15’s just missed out on the honours, due in
part to our girls kicking goals for the other schools.
I nterschool Touch
Shalom entered an open boys and an open girls team into two Touch gala Days this term.
This was an opportunity to develop and test new skills against other schools at Queens Park. They boys
demonstrated tremendous potential with speed, agility and creativity throughout their matches, winning 1,
tying 1, losing 1 and having a forfeit win. For many of the girls this was their first taste of Touch and they
performed admirably and were competitive in all matches.
