“See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,
Redeeming the time, because the days are evil” (Ephesians
5:15-16 KJV). What does the KJV mean when it speaks about
redeeming the time? In the NET, Ephesians 5:15-16 reads as
follows: “Therefore be very careful how you live - not as unwise
but as wise, taking advantage of every opportunity, because the
days are evil.”
So how can we redeem the time? We can stop binge watching
TV. We can get rid of our fiction addictions. We can stop surfing
the internet. And we can replace bad habits with good ones. We
can schedule time for prayer. We can read our Bibles. We can
share the gospel on social media or in person.
Some people tell me they just can’t find time to read their
Bibles. If you can’t find time to read the Bible, then listen to the
Word on your computer or your smartphone. Listen to it as you
drive or jog or do your chores. It’s important. And it’s important
that you do it often--at least four times a week. Research shows
that how often you read or listen to your Bible “more reliably
predicts moral behavior than traditional measures of spirituality,
such as church attendance and prayer.” (Source: “Understanding
the Bible Engagement Challenge: Scientific Evidence for the
Power of 4” by Arnold Cole, Ed.D. & Pamela Caudill Ovwigho,
Ph.D.) So be wise. Redeem the time. Your spiritual future is up to
you.
