His life
He was born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, about 150 km north west of London.
Most biographical information about William Shakespeare’ s life derives From public instead of private documents: vital records, real estate and tax records, lawsuits, records of payments, and references to Shakespeare and his works in printed and hand-written texts.
His plays
• William Shakespeare's plays have the reputation of being among the greatest in the English language and in Western literature. Traditionally, the plays are divided into the genres of tragedy, history, and comedy; they have been translated into every major living language, in addition to being continually performed all around the world. He wrote Romeo & Juliet and Hamlet.
The Globe Theatre• During his lifetime, Shakespeare's plays were
performed on stages in private theatres, provincial theatres, and playhouses.
• They were acted out in the yards of bawdy inns and in the great halls of the London inns of court. Although the Globe is certainly the most well known of all the Renaissance stages associated with Shakespeare and is rightfully the primary focus of discussion, a brief introduction to some of the other Elizabethan theatres of the time provides a more complete picture of the world in which Shakespeare lived and worked.
