  • Shahadah and Islamic Art

La ilaha illallahu Muhammadur rasulillah “There is no god except Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah”

Shahadah is the conscious and voluntary declaration of faith. It is the basis of all actions in Islam. Contained within this is the fundamental belief in the oneness of Allah. It is spoken five times every day during the call to prayer. Not only does it declare the oneness and perfection of Allah but also the importance of Muhammad as being the final prophet. How Muslims understand Allah is reflected in Islamic art and architecture. Look at the following photographs. What do you notice about the architecture and the way that the mosques have been painted?

  • What do you notice about the patterns on the mosques? Why do you think that mosques are decorated with geometric patterns? Do you recall seeing any images? Why do you think that Islam has an aversion to any images being drawn or made, in a statue for example. What do you think the geometric patterns might represent? How might this link to the Shahadah?
