Director’s Corner Hello everyone, Its February, its cold, the snow has finally arrived but camp preparation for 2013 is in full swing! I have alreadfy begun staffing and most of our core positions are already hired. I still have about 10 counselor positions open but should be fully staffed by then end of March. We have a great group of staff sofar, so it should be another unforgettable summer. As many of you may have noticed we have added a couple of new features to the newsletter the last 2 months. The first one is our monthy calendar at a glance and new this month, is the did you know section. Every month, in order to refresh the minds of older members and inform new members, we will have a new camp factoid. We will also have, starting next month, a featured person profile. It may be a camper, staff member or parent, you just never know. The section will include interesting and fun facts about that person. So keep your eyes open, you may be getting a questionnaire to fill out! ☺ Well, all hope you have a good valentines day. Talk to you soon, and remember to think warm thoughts! Good Times, Scott Steele Executive Director

We will be starting a new fundraiser at the end of February that will
assist parents in raising funds for camp time. Shady Oaks Camp will provide plastic donation boxes for parents to place at businesses in their communities. These boxes are specifically for parents to raise money for camp time.
Fifty percent of all donations collected will go directly to campers’ accounts and the other fifty percent raised will go towards operating camp. This fundraiser, if done correctly can
raise a lot of money for your child’s camp time! In order to receive the boxes parents must follow the guidelines listed below: 1. Because boxes are limited, parents must have location(s) secured BEFORE their receive their box. (Good locations include liquor stores, restaurants and grocery stores.)
2. Parents are responsible for checking boxes regularly and sending money to camp. If no money is raises during a one (1) month period from a location, the box(es) must be returned to camp.
3. Boxes are property of Shady Oaks Camp and must be returned to camp if the business no longer wants the box at their location or if the parent decides they would no longer like to participate in this particular fundraiser.
4. This fundraiser will be on going and boxes can be left in locations as long as the business allows.
5. Parents should create a flyer/story about their camper and why they are raising funds to place with the box. Shady Oaks Camp will have some informational flyers about camp for parents to place with their boxes if they do not wish to create their own flyer.

Did you know… The Parents Association for Cerebral Palsy Children Inc. (the group of parents which started camp) was founded in August of 1942. The Parents Association is actually made up of two different groups; The Parents Association for Spastic Children which ran a nursery at the Spalding School in Chicago and a second group who ran a nursery at Martha Washington Home on the Southside of Chicago. Shady Oaks Camp did not open until 1947 and is 5 years younger then the Association. The original camp was located at Pistakee Bay in McHenry, IL but after a few years it was moved to its present location, Homer Glen, IL. Although the original members have all but passed away, the goal of the original group still remains, to serve people with disabilities and provide them with a fun, safe environment in which to spend their summers. The original group may have been comprised of parents of children with Cerebral Palsy but in the past 15 years, Shady Oaks Camp had opened its doors to children and adults of all disabilities. In 2012 out youngest camper was just 7 years old and our oldest was 72 years. Currently we are serving campers with Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Downs Syndrome, Cri Du Chats Syndrome, mild/ moderate/ profound MR and carious other disabilities. So as you can see shady Oaks Camp and The Parents Association may be old but that hasn’t stopped us from updating our goals and image to serve as many people as possible!

They were in dire need of replacement. Thank you to Sheree Kozel-La Ha and the Homer Township Public Library for their generous donations of counter tops, couches and office chairs to camp. A big thank you to the Homer Founders Club and Gary Yambor, Jack Yambor, Mike Bonomo, Paul Anderson and Joe Malacina for helping pick up & deliver the donated items to camp! We would like to thank the employees from the Dominion Employee Giving Program who have pledged donations throughout 2012: Patrick Chmielewski, Glenn Farmer, Frank Keske, David Loy, Gregory Ponto, Kim Vogelsanger andJoseph Wood.
