MESSAGE FROM RABBI LEVITT

Please see the Kol Mevaser blog for an update on the many youth programs happening at KMS.

Also, I am trying to compile a list of all the youth in KMS with their age, school, and contact information. I also would love feedback about what is working with KMS Youth and what we can do better. Please take a moment to fill out this brief Google Form so that we can make sure your child is included in all KMS events.

MISSING SEFORIM

The library is missing numerous volumes of seforim, rendering many sets

incomplete. Please check your KMS cubbyholes and at home if you

inadvertently removed a Sefer.

Now on the Kol Mevaser Blog, Rabbi Weinberg and KMS President, Saul Newman, share special messages for the High Holidays. Shana Tova! Check out the Kol Mevaser High Holiday Supplement for Rosh Hashana greetings and a listing of recent donations. Printed copies are available in the shul lobby.

Note that the Kol Mevaser Blog now also has a Youth Update from Rabbi Levitt.

~ Shimmy Trencher, Chatan Torah

All of those who attended the Shabbat morning youth minyan over the past year knew they could get a quick and insightful synopsis of the parsha hashavua during Torah reading thanks to Rabbi Shimmy Trencher. When KMS was in need of a youth minyan leader this year, Shimmy eagerly stepped up. In addition to his demanding job as interim principal of the Berman Upper School, he took it upon himself to organize the teens and keep the youth minyan running until KMS could hire a new youth Rabbi.

His wife Stacey is an office manager at the Berman Lower School, and they have three children: Tali, who is currently a Junior at Touro College; Leora, who is currently studying in Israel at Shaalvim for Women; and Dovid, who is currently a 10th grader at Berman.

Shimmy and Stacey became good friends with Rabbi and Elana Weinberg when they all lived in West Hartford. The Trenchers moved to Kemp Mill four years ago. Shimmy’s favorite hobbies are reading, spending time with his family, and computer programming. He’s passionate about inspiring, empowering, and believing in our youth, which definitely shined through during his time volunteering with the youth minyan this year.

~ Miriam Bloom, Kallat Torah

For the past seven years, Miriam Bloom has been coordinating Divrei Torah for the Women’s Tefilla Group. She was inspired to volunteer after her daughter Noa had the opportunity to celebrate her own Bat Mitzva at WTG. Miriam is proud and thankful that she has successfully invited/persuaded/pleaded with 45 different women to give a Dvar Torah at WTG, each one inspiring the group and engaging them in Torah learning and teaching.

Educated at Michlalah seminary in Jerusalem and Stern College for Women, Miriam met her husband Reuven Ferziger while she was a student at Cornell Medical School and he was a resident at New York Hospital. They’ve happily raised their three children, Noa, Shifra and Daniel, in Kemp Mill for the past 17 years.

Miriam loves the opportunities that girls and women have at KMS to lead their own tefillot, and to directly read from the Torah throughout the year, especially on Simchat Torah. Her fondest memories of Simchat Torah were as a young girl at the Young Israel of Greater Miami where she and her friends would dance in the circle with their fathers, wave apples on Simchat Torah flags, and participate in traditional Simchat Torah mischief of covertly tying men’s tallesim together and to the bimah.

KMS is pleased to honor the following individuals for their commitment and service to our community:

Lionel Rabin, Chatan Bereishit

Many KMS’ers know Lionel Rabin from his distinct and beautiful davening where he frequently serves as Ba’al Tefillah. He instituted the tune of “Close Every Door” from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat during Kedusha. He came up with the idea when his own son Joseph had his bar mitzvah during parsha Mikeitz which relays the story of, yes, Joseph being in jail.

Lionel, who is marking his 50th wedding anniversary this year, and his lovely wife Carol are founding members of KMS. “I davened at the first Shabbat minyan in the Hermleigh house,” he recalls. Now he proudly watches his two sons Joseph and Ira lead their own davening for the kehillah as well as playing active roles on the ritual committee of the shul. He also enjoys playing with his five grandchildren who live a few blocks away.

A pathologist by training, who worked for several decades at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology before retiring, Lionel now volunteers a few days a week reading pathology slides for a military medical facility. He previously served as past president of Young Israel Shomrai Emunah.

~ Rikki Reifer, Kallat Bereishit

When Rikki Reifer moved to Kemp Mill with her husband Abie from Highland Park, NJ, she thought they'd be staying for a two-year stint for his new job opportunity. Now 23 years later, the Brooklyn native and her family remain in Kemp Mill, and the KMS community have been the beneficiaries of Rikki's dedication to volunteerism. Rikki started the hospital emergency box program 15 years ago as a volunteer for Bikur Cholim of Greater Washington where she now serves as the director of special programs. The emergency box program is now in place in 13 area hospitals providing Shabbat candles, matzah, grape juice and other necessities for families in need.

Contributing countless hours to KMS commitments, Rikki has served on the board of KMS, run Purim programs and co-chaired the KMS banquet last year. She also polished the silver for the yamin noarim this year. Other volunteer activities through the years include her participation in Yad Yehuda, Chevra Kadisha and Meals on Wheels. She also ran the mishloach manot program at Berman Hebrew Academy for several years when her children were students there.

Rikki and Abie have three grown daughters all who attend or attended UMD, College Park. She enjoys crocheting, walking, and canoeing on the Shenandoah River with her family. Being a history buff, she also enjoys visiting battlefields and historic sites in the area. Her favorite memory of Simchat Torah was celebrating in the old house on Hermleigh when it was a much smaller shul and everyone danced outside.

~ Ronnie Reisler, Chatan Maftir

A man of many talents, Ronnie Reisler has served as a KMS board member, Gabbai, and member of the KMS Eruv Committee. He also volunteers for Chevra Kadisha.

Ronnie is an internal medicine physician specializing in treating infectious diseases. His current passion? “Ebola virus,” he says. (Rest assured, he washes his hands before coming to davening.) He also moonlights as a hospitalist on weekends at MedStar Southern Medical Hospital Center. Whatever free time he has left he devotes to watching the St. Louis Cardinals.

He is married to Ilana and is the proud father of three daughters: Ateret, Yardena, and Tekoa.

Thoughts on Simchat Torah? “Women have come a long way at KMS,” he says, “initially having to dance with the Torah in the back of the room behind a mechiza and leining with one Sefer Torah in the sukkah. Now women have the beit medrash and four sefrei torah. Also, allowing the high school teens to run the hakafot is a special feature of Simchat Torah at KMS.”

~ Laura Warshawsky, Kallat Maftir

Laura Warshawsky prefers to serve the KMS community in a stealth-like way: behind the scenes doing what needs to be done without holding an official position on the KMS board. Several times a year, you’ll find her directing her kiddush committee, back in the confines of the kitchen, along with her husband Mark. The two have co-chaired their committee for more years than either of them can remember. Laura also organizes the KMS Women's Tefillah Group Simchat Torah program every year; she’s also been part of the sefarim repair initiative, so members who see a torn page in a siddur now know who to inform.

For the Berman Hebrew Academy, from which their four children graduated, Laura served as upper school liaison for five years and was part of the mishloach manot committee. In the larger community, Laura was a leader of several girl scout troops that met at Berman, and she is the immediate past president and current vice president of education of Kemp Mill Toastmasters.

Professionally, Laura is an attorney and branch chief in the IRS office of Chief Counsel where she specializes in the law of retirement plans. Laura and Mark, have been members of KMS since 2002 and have four children: David, married to Adina; Hannah, Avi and Sarah, and two grandchildren: Shira and Asher. Laura and Mark can sometimes be found battling weeds and wildlife while growing vegetables in their community garden plot in Aspen Hill.

KMS is pleased to honor the following individuals for their commitment and service to our community:
