MAKE AN ERUV TAVSHILIN

This year Shabbos follows the first day of Yomtov. In order to prepare food on Friday for Shabbos, you must make an Eruv Tavshilin on the afternoon of Thursday May 28th before the start of Yomtov. To make an Eruv Tavshilin, take a hard boiled egg and a

piece of matza. Hold them in your right hand, and recite the bracha on page 654 of your Art Scroll siddur, followed by the declaration at the bottom of the page that with this eruv you are permitted to prepare on Yomtov for Shabbos.

FASCINATING FACTS IN JEWISH HISTORY

When the Jewish world discovered the Ethiopian Jews, it was no surprise that their observances differed from normative Judaism. The Ethiopians had been isolated for centuries and were therefore ignorant of all the developments of Jewish history and Rabbinical decrees. Therefore they were ignorant of the holidays of Chanukah and Pu-rim and had never heard of observances like lighting candles on Friday night or making Kiddush over a cup of wine. Some of their observances were much more curious. One was the fact that while the Jewish world observes Shavuos on the 6th day of Sivan, the Ethiopian Jews observed Shavuos on the 12th of Sivan. A little investigation into this anomaly can be very in-structive.

Even though Shavuos is the only holiday whose exact date is not given in the Torah, one would think that fixing the calendar date of Shavuos would still be relatively easy. On the 2nd day of Pesach, 16 Nissan, we begin to count the 49 days of the Omer. At the end of the counting of seven weeks we are commanded to observe Shavuos. Day 50, Sivan 6 is Shavuos. Where is there room for confusion? The problem lies in the Torah’s wording of the commandment to count the Omer. The Torah states “and you shall count for yourself from the day after the Sabbath from the day of the bringing of the Omer…” What day is the day after the Sabbath? The Talmud employs the rules of Biblical exposition and explains that in this context, the word Sabbath is the first day of Passover. In the last centuries before the common era, there was a trend among the upper classes of the Jewish community to reject the Rabbinic interpretations and observe the Torah accord-ing to its literal reading. These people were called the Tzdukkim or Saducees. By their simple reading, the counting of the Omer always begins on the Sunday after the first day of Pesach, literally the day after Sabbath. For example, iIf the first day of Passover was a Sunday, Pharisees (those who Rabbinically interpret the Torah) would start counting the Omer on Monday The Saducees would not count until the following Sunday. This debate petered out a few hundred years later as most of the Saducees assimilated to first Greek, then Roman, culture. Centuries later the Jewish world discovered the Ethiopian Jews. These Jews observed many of the commandments of the Torah as found in their version of the Torah written in Amharic. The origins of this community remain unclear, but their Torah was clearly based on the real Torah. This Amharic Torah also states that the Omer count begins on the day after the Sabbath. The Ethiopian community didn’t interpret the Torah literally but they also have access to Rabbinic interpretation, so they came up with their own interpretation.. They understood the day after the Shabbos to mean not the day after the first day of Pesach but the day after the entire holiday of Passover. Passover begins on Nissan 15 and ends on Nissan 21. Fifty days later is 12 Sivan.
