Purpose This document lists and gives a description of the observation counters and gaugesprovided by the Serving GPRS Suppo Node (SGSN) server as installed in thePacket-Switched Core Network (PSCN).

This guide applies to the U32 version of the SGSN server. In such version the SGSNcan act either a 2G only node or a 3G only node or a 2G/3G combined node,thus beeing able to manage users who are attached either via a second generation(2G) or a third generation (3G) radio access network. In order to have separatestatistics, counters specific for the 2G and 3G domain are provided. Moreover,combined counters, useful in case of a 2G/3G combined node, are also provided.These combined counters are related to the total amount of users served by anSGSN server (both 2G and 3G users).

The counter/gauge names are defined in files SG_obs.xml and LAOBS.xml.

Terminological conventions The following terminological conventions are used in this document:The terminology used is that specified by the International Telecommunica-tion Union Telecommunication standardization sector (ITU-T) and EuropeanTelecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) standards.

This document uses abbreviations developed from the English extended formwhen available. Certain abbreviations may be French-based when no Englishextended form exists.

This guide applies standard Global System for Mobile communication (GSM)and Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) terminology.

The term PSCN (Packet-Switched Core Network)indicates the packet do-main in Alcatel GSM and UMTS networks.

The term 2G UE (User Equipment)indicates the CSCN subscriber terminalof a subscriber attached to a 2G Radio Access Network (GSM network).

1 Overview

1.1 Observation typesThe following observation types are available:

Permanent observation. It provides data that the observation managementfunction continuously collects in order to measure SGSN performance. Thisdata enables you to monitor the overall behavior of the SGSN.

On-demand observation. It provides data that the observation managementfunction collects on SGSN objects. However, this data is not collected on anongoing basis; you need to use the management function to generate thisinformation.

1.2 Measure typesThe following types of measurements can be retrieved on a periodic basis, eitherpermanently or on-demand:

The total amount of occurrences of a specific event during the observationperiod.

The maximum value of a measurable entity during the observation period(maximum gauge). It is processed during the observation period thanks toperiodic retrieval of samples. The period of the periodic sampling used tocompute this maximum value is 60 seconds. This periodic sampling cannotbe configured.

The mean value of a measurable entity during the observation period (meangauge). It is processed at the end of the observation period thanks to periodicretrieval of samples.

Note: The term User Equipment (UE) introduced in the UMTS standards includes theequipment known as a Mobile Station (MS) in GSM. The descriptions given for thefollowing counter/gauges use the term MS.
