Product Introduction

The SGI COPAN 400 series of storage systems are based on the Enterprise MAID technology for managing long-term persistent data.

COPAN MAID (Massive Array of Idle Disks) is a storage technology that employs a large group of disk drives organized into RAID 5 (3+1)RAID sets in which only those drives in active use are spinning at any given time. This reduces power consumption and prolongs the life of the drives. MAID is designed for Write Once Read Occasionally (WORO) applications.

The VTL (virtual tape library) combines traditional tape backup methodology with low-cost disk technology to create an optimized backup and recovery solution. VTLs emulate physical tape, but use disk as the storage media. This provides a faster, more flexible and more cost-effective storage solution than physical tape.

In addition, because the VTL can emulate more tape drives than your physical tape library really has, more backup streams can run simultaneously, enabling organizations to easily complete their backups within the allotted backup window.

COPAN Configurations (1 of 6)

The SGI COPAN 400 typical configurations fall into these categories:

• Native MAID: This configuration acts like a direct or SAN attached storage system. VTL is not supported in this configuration.• Standard Configuration: For backup server transfers data to the VTL system. The VTL manages the VirtualTape Libraries.• Replication Configuration: The backup server transfers data to the VTL system. The VTL manages the VirtualTape Libraries. Replication is maintains a copy of the data on the local server or on a remote server.• Export to Tape Configuration: The backup server manages backups to the Virtual Tape Library while the VTL system controls the export of data from Virtual Tapes to physical tapes.• Automated Tape Caching Configuration : VTL by acting as a cache to your physical tape library, provides transparent access to data regardless of its location. The tapes will always appear to be inside virtual libraries and will be visible to the backup application regardless of whether the data is actually on disk or tape.

Note: Shelves can either be Native MAID or VTL.

In the Standard configuration, the backup software manages all tapes, virtual and physical, by treating the VTL as though it were just another stand-alone tape library.

The SGI COPAN 400M (native MAID) supports 1 to 8 shelves, enumerated SH0 through SH7.

The SGI COPAN 400T is where one VTL application server connects from one to eight shelves in a 8 shelf cabinet.

The SGI COPAN 400TX is where two VTL application servers can be connects two to eight shelves in a 8 shelf cabinet.

The VTL-T-DP and VTL-TX-DP feature is where a VTL application server can be connected to two shelf controllers in a shelf for higher throughput.

The VTL-TX-DP-FO feature is where two VTL servers can be connected in sets of two, four, six, or eight shelves in a 8 shelf and provide higher performance as well as failover support for each other.

High Level Tiered Architectural Design

The Copan uses a three tier architecture:

• The Connectivity Layer: Supports the interconnection of disk drives within a single canister. This layer enables a point-to-point connection to each drive, queuing of data transactions, device management, and power management. This occurs at the canister level.

• The Data Protection Layer: Embedded storage controllers in each shelf provide for COPAN Systems’ POWER MANAGED RAID® software and DISK AEROBICS® software. This occurs at the shelf level.

• The Personality Layer: Resides on the enhanced MAID platform and presents data to the host servers. (VTL and Native MAID)

COPAN 400M Product FeaturesPOWER MANAGED RAID® Software• Provides full RAID 5 data protection for all your data.• Spins drives as needed – a maximum of 25% (MAID) or 50% (VTL) at a time

DISK AEROBICS® Software• Provides continuous data verification by exercising and testing idle drives to ensure data integrity and drive health. This is done every 30 days.• Proactively manages drive health by monitoring SMART parameters and environmental data.• Copies data from a potentially failing drive to a new healthy spare drive, avoiding lengthy RAID rebuild times, data corruption, and data loss.

Auto Power Swapping (APS)™• Allows applications to access LUNs by automatically powering the LUN on or off as needed. • APS order is Off <-> Standby (spun down) <-> On (spun up) <-> Idle <-> Active (I/O)• Applications can also explicitly control the power state of a LUN using standard SCSI start/stop commands.

Always-on Region (AOR)™Allows storage applications to pin one or several regions of blocks in a reserved disk area that is continuously kept online. AOR files are configuration specific.

COPAN 400T/TX Product Features (1 of 2)The COPAN 400T/TX also incorporates the COPAN400M Features

• ACSLS and Library Station Configuration: ACSLS Manager™ and Library Station software manages heterogeneous StorageTek tape libraries. The ACSLS/Library Station option works with ACSLS/Library Station-managed tape libraries, allowing the system to share ACSLS/Library Station-managed libraries among the VTL server and backup servers. This makes it possible to import data from physical tapes and export data on Virtual Tapes to physical tapes.

• Automated Tape Caching: When implementing the Automated Tape Caching feature, the VTL acts as a cache to the physical tape library, providing transparent access to data regardless of its location.

• CallHome is a unique customer support utility that proactively identifies and diagnoses potential system or component failures and automatically notifies system administrators, as well as SGI support, via E-mail.

• Encrypt and compress data that is being exported to tape or that is being replicated.

• Import and Export Tapes: Use the import feature to migrate data from existing physical tapes to Virtual Tapes on the COPAN 400T/TX. In addition, this feature support the exporting of data stored in the 400T/TX to physical tape.

• NDMP Backup Support: The Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP) Backup Support option allows certified backup applications and industry standard NAS devices (i.e. NetApp filers) to perform a backup and restore using the NDMP protocol over an IP network.

• Replication: Replication protects data stored in the VTL by maintaining a copy of the Virtual Tape in a separate location.

• SNMP Integration: The COPAN 400T/TX provides Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) support to integrate VTL management into an existing Enterprise management solution, such as HP OpenView, CA Unicenter, IBM Tivoli NetView, or BMC Patrol.

• VirtualTape Libraries: The VTL Console software allows the creation of VirtualTape Libraries on the 400T/TX. These libraries are used to store the Virtual Tapes and Virtual Tape drives. Each VirtualTape Library will be assigned to one or more backup servers, or SAN clients. Backup data is sent via Fibre Channel to the VTL server.
