Good Evening,

It is wltli a great deal of pride lliat we welcome you to Can Can. Tor a brief ])eriod of timewc will wisk you away from the modern world ofairplanes and rockets, and set you down in Parisof the 1890's. The magic carpet that we use hasbeen wo\en by two master craftsmen—Al>e Burrows and Cole Porter.

With the call for "Curtain Up" vou willwitness the combined efforts of two hundred \ol-unteers. You will probably recognize some of these volunteers asneighbors and coworkers. These are the peo}>lc that have staffed themany onstage and offstage functions that mus the filled before a showcan hit the boards. These are the people that ARK SI.OC — all ofwhom believe that organizations such as ours add strength and vitalitvto a community. A cordial invitation is extended to those of you wholike to join us in future productions.

It is particularly gratifying to ])<>inl out the enthusiastic participation of the more youthful members of the c<tminunity in this jmoduc-tion. For instance, we have talented high schoolers staffing the properties, set painting and stage crew committees in addition to tho.se performing onstage. In f;ict, the entire jail scene that you will see in Act1 Scene 7 has been built from scratch by a Foreign l-",xchange studentfrom England, and his high school host.

I would also like to pay tribute to our S))ecial Members, whosenames appear early in the Program. Their patronage has helped usproduce this show and has also allowed us to offer three vocal scholarships each year in the classical and light opera fieUi.

I'inally I would like to thank you—our audience. Your supporthas enabled us to grow steadily throughout the 89 ye;irs of our existence. I h(}]ie that you will continue to .supj)ort our productions, }iar-ticularly for next Aprils ju-esentalion of Eerner and I.oewes' Mi/ FairLadj/.

So please relax and enjoy the show. As the song says. Mesdamcs"If a lady in Iran can. Baby, yoii can Can Can loo!"

Best regards,

Prenidrnl

Synopsis

When an upright judge, Aristide Forestier, decides toinvestigate the illegal and scandalous dancing of the Can-Can in the bohemian sector of Paris, he succumbs insteadto the temptations of Montmarte night life and the winningways of Pistache, owner of the Cafe where the dancing ispresented. A secondary story revolves around the amatorycomplications of a soubrette, Claudine, who is pursued bya wily art critic, Hilaire, but has long been interested in aBulgarian sculptor Boris.

A WORD ON COMPLIMENTARY TICKETS

So many people and businesses p:ive freely of their lime andservices to the Schenectady Light Opera Company that it is impossible to establish rational criteria for distributing complimentarytickets as an expression of appreciation.

Most people wouldn't take them if offered since the real rewardfor their efforts is the continued existence of the Company.

This is the basis for SLOC's "no complimentary ticket" policy.
