• Geo-location & Database access– Must be supported in both Fixed and Portable Mode II

devices– Accuracy of 50 meters– FCC will certify the official databases

• Spectrum Sensing– Must be supported in all devices– ATSC and NTSC TV signals– Wireless microphones– Sensing down to -114 dBm (approx -15 dB SNR)– Will consider “sensing-only” devices but with much more

stringent testing required

Impact on IEEE 802

• The VHF and UHF frequencies offer significantly better propagation characteristics than the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency bands

• IEEE 802.22 is addressing the Fixed-to-fixed network topology

• There may be interest in these frequencies for longer-range operation– Longer range WLAN

– Longer range WPAN (Smart Utility Networks)

– Other?

• To utilize these frequencies certain capabilities must be provided– Internet access (often available in current networks)

– Location awareness

– Network Quieting for Spectrum Sensing

– Spectrum Sensing Techniques

– Improved Spectral Mask

• IEEE 802 should consider coexistence of multiple technologies all utilizing these frequencies
