Dear handball friends, Welcome back to the DELO EHF Champions League 2020/21 season as the group phase enters the home straight. Following an inspiring Women’s EHF EURO 2020 in Denmark, where Norway with no fewer than 17 DELO EHF Champions League players in their squad came out on top to claim their eighth European gold medal, attention switches back to the club game and a crucial period of what has already proven to be a fascinating season so far. One of the encouraging aspects of the season so far has been the professional and sensible way the handball community has dealt with the challenging circumstances of the current pandemic.

From the European Handball Federation’s perspective, clubs, players and staff, and federations deserve huge amounts of credit for the ways in which they have conducted themselves; placing measures and following instructions to ensure matches at the highest level of handball going ahead.

As a result, the fans – the heartbeat of our game – are still able to follow their favourite teams, even if it is sadly not inside the arenas. Despite the lack of crowds, the level and entertainment value has remained at the kind of standard that we have grown accustomed to in the DELO EHF Champions League.

The fact that so few matches have been postponed is testament to the hard work carried out especially by clubs, and on behalf of everyone at the EHF, we sincerely thank you.

Even in this difficult time with necessary restrictions on the events, we, together with clubs and our partners, will make sure that the DELO EHF Champions League continues to be seen, followed, heard and talked about as much as in the past years – if not even more. Metz Handball – InfosNach dem Erreichen des DELO EHF FINAL4 im Jahr 2019 war Metz Handball in einer guten Position, um in der vergangenen Saison wieder unter den vier besten Teams des Kontinents zu sein. Obwohl in diesem Sommer viele Spieler gewechselt wurden, ist die Qualität immer noch da. Werden die Ergebnisse folgen?

Fakten• Metz hat sich zum 22. Mal für die EHF Champions League qualifiziert und ist damit führend unter allen französischen Teams, die an dem Wettbewerb teilgenommen haben• Nach dem DELO EHF FINAL4 im Jahr 2019 will Metz nun jedes Jahr dieses Event erreichen• In diesem Sommer verließen vier große Spieler Metz, darunter Kapitän Grace Zaadi (Rostov), Laura Glauser (Györ) und die rechte Flügelspielerin Laura Flippes (Paris).• Der beste Trainer des All-Star-Teams der Champions League 2019/20, Emmanuel Mayonnade, hat die niederländische Nationalspielerin Debbie Bont und die beste junge Spielerin der Champions League 2017/18, Tjasa Stanko, in den Verein geholt.• In der Winterpause wurde Ex-SG BBM-Lady Dinah Eckerle als „Medical Joker“ verpflichtet.• Ebenfalls im Kaer steht Daphne Gautschi, die letzte Saison auf Leihbasis in Bietigheim spielte.

Im Rampenlicht: Meline NocandyIn ihrer zweiten richtigen Saison in der Champions League bestätigte die junge Innenverteidigerin alles, was über sie gesagt worden war, insbesondere, dass sie stark genug ist, um die Mannschaft zu führen. Und ihre ersten Spiele mit Frankreich waren ein weiterer Beweis für ihre Fähigkeiten.Ohne Zaadi wird Mayonnade Nocandy der Schlüssel für Metz sein - ein weiterer Schritt, den sie genauso leicht bewältigen sollte wie die vorherigen.

Wie sie sich selbst einschätzenClubpräsident Thierry Weizman legt die Messlatte für das Team hoch. „Unser Ziel für diesen Wettbewerb ist es, besser als in den Vorjahren abzuschneiden“, freut er sich, als eines der besten Teams auf dem Konti-nent zurück zu sein.Obwohl Metz sich immer als Außenseiter ausgibt, gehören sie fast immer zu den Favoriten.
