SFO | Service Animal Relief Guidelines Introduction
Introduction
SFO Service Animal Relief Areas bring comfort and a calming environment to travelers with animal companions. This amenity will provide a friendly environment accessible to passengers of all abilities. The space will accommodate the basic necessities of travel, providing enough space for a single passenger, their Service Animal and bags.
This document is intended to illustrate SFO’s design goals and opportunities for continued innovation. It presumes a minimum adherence to governing building codes and builds upon key values established in the REACH document.
The document should be interpreted as a baseline for design teams. It describes a series of best practices ranging from locations to finish materials that ensure a high level of customer service. Not all recommendations may be achievable on all projects.
This document also invites design teams to continue innovating. Many best practices have yet to be identified, technologies continue to change, and fresh design ideas are always welcome.
Above all, the design standard is provided as a launch point for design teams to provide inviting and peaceful Service Animal Relief facilities.

SFO | Service Animal Relief Guidelines Service Animal Relief Key
Serenity & Comfort Ease of Use SustainabilitySFO’s vision for the Service Animal relief areas is to provide a comforting and tranquil environment with both owners and Service Animals in mind. These amenity rich spaces are a part of SFO’s enhanced customer experience. Service Animal-friendly surfaces, calming scents and Service Animal focused features provide a serene and comfortable retreat for customers and their Service Animals.
Designing for human diversity, social inclusion and equality is a part of SFO’s mission. Design for all involves creating a space that is usuable by everyone to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation.
Energy and water-saving technologies will be incorporated into Service Animal relief areas. SFO’s goals for lower resource consumption help drive innovative design with cutting edge fixtures and strategies.
Intuitive signage and accessory locations allow passengers to navigate Service Animal relief areas effortlessly. Durable antimicrobial finishes, cleanable surfaces and access to all areas allow maintenance staff to keep Service Animal relief areas continually clean and operational.

Service Animal Relief Location & Size
SFO aims to provide outstanding customer satisfaction, quality services that surpass minimal needs for customers. Achieving excellence requires planning to anticipate the quantity and size of these facilities throughout the terminals.
Locations are determined based on ease of access by guests in the different terminals of the airport.
This section identifies how to allocate enough space for sufficient facilities to meet current and future peak demands.
Note: See “Appendix A” for the rest of the Domestic Terminal locations.

LocationsService Animal Relief locations are determined by a combination of guest access, capacity and adjacencies to other program spaces. Rules of thumb for locating restroom blocks are shown here and refined on the following pages.

SFO | Service Animal Relief Guidelines Service Animal Relief Capacity
Service Animal Relief Sizes
Fixtures are pre-determined as single user occupancies (with one Service Animal and owner). Sizes of each Service Animal relief are an average of 80 to 120 square feet.
Service Animal owners are expected to take responsibility for their Service Animals. Keeping a leash on Service Animals when Service Animals are not in an enclosed area may prevent bites and fights. Owners are expected to clean up after Service Animals have used the Service Animal Relief Area.

Service Animal Relief Configuration
SFO’s Indoor Service Animal Relief Areas can be the average size of 80-120 SF.
Larger outdoor Service Animal relief areas exist Pre-Security in courtyards, while smaller Service Animal Relief Areas indoor are Post-Security. The larger outdoor areas accommodates customers and Service Animals near baggage claim upon arrival as well as those in proximity to the ticketing counters Pre-Security.
This section explores the typical components and amenities considered standard at SFO and identifying specific criteria such as when a particular amenity is required or optional.

Restroom Layout
Plan Configuration
The two main considerations driving Service Animal relief area layout are ease of circulation (for both customer and Service Animal) and zoning of space dedicated to specific functions.
• Space for wheel chair turnaround on the hardscaped surface for customers
• A clean up/wash zone • Service Animal area with a floor drain
and accessories• Space for luggage and carry-ons

Grass LayoutThe two main considerations the size, location and layout are ease of circulation (for both customer and Service Animal) and zoning of space dedicated to specific functions.
Creating a narrow strip prevents users from over reaching and stepping into the Relief Grass.
Creating a smaller corner patch prevents users from over reaching and stepping into the Relief Grass.
The width of the island of grass should be no wider than 48”. A distance that is within arms reach from the hardscaped surface must be considered when designing the area of artifical grass. Allow for code compliant clearances surrounding the grass for users to walk around.

Preferred Materials
Service Animal Relief Area finishes create the warm, welcoming, and serene environment SFO wishes to achieve. The palette must be extremely durable to withstand continual use, daily cleaning and periodic maintenance.
Materials must be:
• Durable• Antimicrobial & stain resistant • Compatible with SFO’s preferred cleaners and maintence
guidelines• Sustainable, observing best practices for responsible
material selection
Material Review and Substitution Process
This document identifies performance criteria, pre-approved products for primary finishes and accessories commonly found in the Service Animal Relief Areas. Pre-approved products are intended to take guesswork out of Service Animal Relief Area design, but design teams are encouraged to seek new and delightful solutions. The process for selecting new materials is as follows:
• Design Team selection and documentation including representative samples, product data, warranty information and demostrated compatibility with SFO cleaning products
• Exhibit use in public space for 3 years• Arrange site visit if possible
• Review and acceptance by ADA Coordinator, SFO Maintenance Staff Manager and Custodial
• Review and acceptance by SFO Design Review Committee

Waterproofing ApproachThe ideal approach to waterproofing a Service Animal Relief Area is:• 6” perimeter concrete curb around the Service Animal Relief room
excluding the doorway.• Slope all floors towards a central drain.• Apply a continuous waterproofing membrane below floor finishes and
up to the top of sink counter height (must be a minimum of 34 inches in height from finished floor).
All new construction projects at SFO should use this approach when the floor slab can be built lower than the surrounding slab to achieve this slope.

On removation projects, depressing an existing structural concrete slab enough to achieve sufficient slope can be cost-prohibitive and the following approach can be used:• 6” perimeter concrete curb around the Service Animal Relief room
excluding the doorway.• Continuous waterproofing membrane below floor finish in the public
area in addition the the Service Animal Relief room.• When possible slope all floors towards a central drain.• One floor drain at the Service Animal Relief Area and one in the Service
Animal Owner Hardscaped surface.

Plumbing & Electrical
This page offers best practices for providing a seamless interface between the user experience and the essential systems that support it.
ElectricalConvenience Outlet
Auto Soap Dispensers
Remote Drivers
At least one exterior type GFRC convenience outlet with a lockable cover similar to hose bibbs. Outlets should be provided in the public circulation area for custodial use. All convenience outlets in the public area should have grey receptacles and stainless steel cover plates unless otherwise indicated by the design team.
Automated soap dispensers should operate on a dedicated electrical circuit. Circuits breaking during off-hours can result in restrooms having no soap supply for long periods of time.
Provide remote drivers to control cove lights.
PlumbingHose Bib
Manual Flush
Provide at least one recessed hose bibb fixture in the restroom circulation area for custodial use. Hose bibb fixture shall be recessed, mounted to the wall and lockable.
A wall mounted flush mechanism should be provided.
