What is Free Open Source Software

Free Open-source software (OSS) is computer software for which the source code and certain other rights normally reserved for copyright holders are provided under a software license that meets the Open Source Definition or that is in the public domain. This permits users to use, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it in modified or unmodified forms. It is very often developed in a public, collaborative manner.

WHAT IS ● is the first open-source integrated library system (ILS)● first free open source software library automation package● was created in 1999 by Katipo Communications for the

Horowhenua Library Trust in New Zealand.● First installation went live in January of 2000.● Its development is steered by a growing community of users

collaborating to achieve their technology goals for the library.

• Koha is a Maori word meaning “a gift”.Maori is the native or indigenous people of New Zealand and

also one of the official languages of New Zealand, English being the other.

BASIC FEATURES OF KOHA

● an online public access catalogue (OPAC) of the library's holdings;

● a database of library users/members;● issuing books to borrowers and returning books to the

collection;● borrower requests for library items;

Page 7: SFD 2012 Presentation

WHY USE KOHA?

1. Full-featured ILS● In use worldwide in libraries of all sizes● Is a true enterprise-class ILS with comprehensive

functionality including basic or advanced options.● includes modules for circulation, cataloging, acquisitions,

serials, reserves,patron management, branch relationships, and more...

Page 8: SFD 2012 Presentation

WHY USE KOHA? Cont.1

2. Dual Database Design● Utilizes the strengths of the two major industry-standard

database types [text-based and RDBMS] ●Databases used MySQL, PostgreSQL3. Library Standards Compliant

● Is built using library standards and protocols that ensure interoperability between Koha ILS and other systems and technologies, while supporting existing workflows and tools.uses MARC21, Z39.50 transport protocol, SIP1/SIP2 protocol

● MARC, MAchine-Readable Cataloging, is a data format and set of related standards used by libraries to encode and share information about books and other material they collect.

WHY USE KOHA? Cont.2

4. Web-based Interfaces● Interfaces are all based on standards-compliant World Wide

Web technologies–XHTML, CSS and Javascript–making Koha a truly platform- independent solution.5. Free / Open Source

● Distributed under the open-source General Public License (GPL)6. No Vendor Lock-in

● Libraries are free to install and use Koha themselves if the have the in-house expertise or to purchase support or development services from the best available source

Page 10: SFD 2012 Presentation

What are the benefits of Koha● Easy access to information for library staff and users due to effective

searching and issuing of items.● Automation of alerts to remind patrons and staff about, for example,

overdue items or arrival of new items.● Reduced time of processing of library items, due to MARC and z39.50

compatibility. ● Online supervision becomes possible, reducing the line management

responsibilities of senior staff.● Library management becomes easier through automated collection of

data.● Through the acquisition module budgets can be more effectively

managed.● Koha brings together library users and staff, as both can see various

aspects of the system and can work together more effectively to achieve each user's goals.
