2. What is Free Open Source SoftwareFree Open-source software (OSS) is computer software for which the source code andcertain other rights normally reserved for copyrightholders are provided under a software license thatmeets the Open Source Definition or that is in the publicdomain. This permits users to use, change, and improvethe software, and to redistribute it in modified orunmodified forms. It is very often developed in a public, collaborative manner. 3. Popular FOSS ApplicationsWeb Browsers: Firefox, Google ChromeOffice Apps OpenOffice, LibreOfficeLinux KernelApache Web ServerMySQL Database ServerPHP, PerlSquid Proxy Server 4. WHAT IS is the first open-source integrated library system (ILS) first free open source software library automation package was created in 1999 by Katipo Communications for theHorowhenua Library Trust in New Zealand. First installation went live in January of 2000. Its development is steered by a growing community of userscollaborating to achieve their technology goals for the library. Koha is a Maori word meaning a gift. Maori is the native or indigenous people of New Zealand andalso one of the official languages of New Zealand, English beingthe other. 6. BASIC FEATURES OF KOHA an online public access catalogue (OPAC) of the librarysholdings; a database of library users/members; issuing books to borrowers and returning books to thecollection; borrower requests for library items; 7. WHY USE KOHA?1. Full-featured ILS In use worldwide in libraries of all sizes Is a true enterprise-class ILS with comprehensivefunctionality including basic or advanced options. includes modules for circulation, cataloging, acquisitions, serials, reserves, patron management, branch relationships, and more... 8. WHY USE KOHA? Cont.12. Dual Database Design Utilizes the strengths of the two major industry-standarddatabase types [text-based and RDBMS]Databases used MySQL, PostgreSQL3. Library Standards Compliant Is built using library standards and protocols that ensureinteroperability between Koha ILS and other systems andtechnologies, while supporting existing workflows and tools.uses MARC21, Z39.50 transport protocol, SIP1/SIP2 protocol MARC, MAchine-Readable Cataloging, is a data format andset of related standards used by libraries to encode and shareinformation about books and other material they collect. 9. WHY USE KOHA? Cont.24. Web-based Interfaces Interfaces are all based on standards-compliant World WideWeb technologiesXHTML, CSS and Javascriptmaking Kohaa truly platform- independent solution.5. Free / Open Source Distributed under the open-source General Public License(GPL)6. No Vendor Lock-in Libraries are free to install and use Koha themselves if thehave the in-house expertise or to purchase support ordevelopment services from the best available source 10. What are the benefits of Koha Easy access to information for library staff and users due to effectivesearching and issuing of items. Automation of alerts to remind patrons and staff about, for example, overdue items or arrival of new items. Reduced time of processing of library items, due to MARC and z39.50compatibility. Online supervision becomes possible, reducing the line managementresponsibilities of senior staff. Library management becomes easier through automated collection ofdata. Through the acquisition module budgets can be more effectivelymanaged. Koha brings together library users and staff, as both can see variousaspects of the system and can work together more effectively to achieveeach users goals. 11.
