m i s s i o n s t a t e m e n tDear Friends of the Sarcoma Foundation of America, It gives me great pleasure to present the 2011 Sarcoma Founda-tion of America (SFA) annual report, and to report that 2011 marked our 10th anniversary! Over the course of this short period of time, the SFA has become the nation’s leading advocate for increased sarcoma research, championing the cause for new and better treatments for sar-coma patients. We at the SFA are quite proud of the accomplishments realized to date. Not too long ago, sarcoma patients faced a truly dismal treatment climate: almost no visible therapies, little cohesion within the patient community, and low-level activity on the research front — all of which meant extremely dim prospects for 50 percent of patients whose sarcoma was not caught early enough. Fast forward to today and the picture, while still highly

challenging, is certainly demonstrably brighter due to SFA’s efforts. Those efforts include the following:• Funded 57 Sarcoma Foundation of America Research Grants — The SFA

has developed a program to provide grants to investigators interested in translational science — research that will lead to the development of novel agents against sarcoma.

• Doubled the dollar amount of our translational research awards — In 2011, SFA grants increased up to $50,000, up from $25,000 in previous years.

• Funded two half-million dollar Advanced Clinical Research Awards through the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) — a multi-year award designed to fund investigators who are committed to clinical cancer research.

• Funded five Young Investigator Awards through the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) — provides funding to promising young investigators to encourage and promote quality research in sarcoma.

• Developed a national Sarcoma Patient Registry — a systemic collection of data on the occurrence, treatment, physician-reported outcome, and characteristics of sarcoma. Helping physicians and researchers in every facet of patient care, from investigating the cause of cancer, to making the diagnosis, to tracking the effectiveness of different treatments with the purpose of conducting research to assess and control the impact of the disease and increase clinical trial participation.

With your help our programs have touched so many lives. Though we have made progress, there is still an urgent need for further sarcoma research, education and awareness. I encourage everyone to give generously in support of this cause. Thank you for your continued support. Together, we have the very real possibility of finding the cure in our time.

Sincerely,

Mark Thornton, MD, PhDPresident, Board of directors

Poul H.B. Sorensen, MD, PhD British Columbia Cancer Research CenterRecipient of the Alexander Burdo/ ZIoPhArm research AwardInterrogating the effects of IGF1R blockade on childhood sarcoma fusion oncoprotein stability Abstract: The overall goal of this proposal is to determine how IGF1R supports transformation by dominantly-acting oncopro-tiens found in pediatric sarcomas. Aim 1 will focus specifically on ETV6-NTRK3 (EN), a dominant chimeric tyrosine kinase that we first discovered in pediatric saromas. We have recently gained valu-able insights into how IGF1R supports EN transformation. First, we confirmed that EN transformation requires the IGF1R. Second, we found that EN physically co-localizes and interacts with IGF1R at the membrane in live cells. Third, we unexpectedly found that block-

ing IGF1R with the small molecule dual specificity IGF1R/insulin receptor (INSR) kinase inhibitor, BMS-536924, dramatically reduces EN protein stability in a proteasome-dependent manner. This causes robust re-localization of EN into cytoplasmic protein aggregates, where EN is ubiquitinated. Moreover, another IGF1R kinase inhibitor, BMS-754807, the IGF1R blocking antibody CP-751871, and siRNAs to IGF1R but NOT INSR, have similar effects as BMS-536924. In exciting very recent studies, we found that the E3 ligase KPC1 prefer-entially associates with EN in the presence of BMS-536924, and that over-expression of KPC1 induces EN degradation. Based on these findings, we hypothesize that EN becomes membrane-localized via IGF1R, and that this prevents EN degradation by KPC1/2. The goal of Aim 1 is to uncover the molecular mechanisms behind these find-ings. The goal of Aim 2 is to determine whether similar mechanisms control other fusion proteins found in pediatric sarcomas that have been shown to respond clinically to IGF1R inhibition. The rationale for studying this process is that a more rigorous understanding of how IGF1R contributes to transformation by such oncoproteins is essential to identify proteins other than IGF1R itself for therapeutic targeting. This is important as resistance to IGF1R inhibitors in clinical trials has already been observed. Our studies may therefore identify new path-way targets that can be co-inhibited to overcome IGF1R resistance.

Kevin B. Jones, MD University of Utah - Huntsman Cancer InstituteRecipient of the Ashleigh Lau/ Morgan Stanley Research AwardBeta-catenin activation in synovial sarcomagenesis and progression Abstract: Synovial sarcoma is a deadly soft-tissue malignancy with a predilection for adolescents and young adults. The develop-ment of sorely needed targeted therapies depends on the identification of critical pathways in synovial sarcomagenesis. Expression of an SYT-SSX fusion oncogene generated by one of the characteristic X:18 translocations initiates synovial sarcomagenesis. Possible cooperation of β-catenin has been implicated by the prominent nuclear localization of β-catenin in a majority of human synovial sarcomas and the identification of activating β-catenin exon 3 mutations in a subset of these. The mixed cellular phenotype of synovial sarcoma, including both mesenchymal and epithelial features, further suggests a role for Wnt/β-catenin deregulation. Using the genetically engineered mouse model of synovial sarcoma developed in our laboratory, we will interrogate the contributions of β-catenin activation and disruption to synovial sarcoma initiation as well as maintenance and progression. The previously described model, which spontaneously generates tumors that faithfully recapitulate human

synovial sarcoma at complete penetrance via the conditional expres-sion of the human SYT-SSX2 cDNA in myoblasts, has recently been improved to permit in vivo monitoring of tumor maintenance and progression. In addition, a more stringent model for site-specific synovial sarcomagenesis using adenoviral delivery of Cre-recombinase permits the investigation of tumor initiation itself. These two models will be further manipulated by crossing them to available mice with conditional genetic alterations that constitutively activate or ablate the β-catenin gene. In addition, two β-catenin antagonists, PKF115-584 and AV6946, and one β-catenin activator, lithium chloride, will be used to test the role of transient enhancement or disruption of the pathway in synovial sarcoma initiation, maintenance, and progression. Our preliminary data suggests that β-catenin activation indeed enhances synovial sarcomagenesis. By these experiments, we will bring its role and its potential as a therapeutic target into better focus.

Quan-sheng Zhu, MD, PhD The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer CenterRecipient of the Mandell/Kropp Run for a Sarcoma Cure Research AwardHistone deacetylase inhibitor reprograms hSNF5/INI1 regulated gene expression for the treatment of epithelioid sarcoma Abstract: Epithelioid Sarcomas (ESs) are characterized by a locally aggressive behavior and a propensity for lymphatic and metastatic spread. Current therapy follows general STS treatment guidelines with complete surgical resection being the desired (when possible) approach; the impact of chemotherapy and radiotherapy is not well defined, but seems minimal. Five-year survival rates of 60% to 75% have been reported. Survival continues to decrease with time and 10YDSS rates of ~40-50% have been observed, a critical factor when taking into account the commonly young age at ES presenta-tion; proximal ES outcomes are even less favorable. Loss of INI1, the product of the hSNF5/SMARCB1/BAF47 gene first identified as a tumor suppressor in malignant rhabdoid tumors, has recently been demonstrated to occur in the majority of ES. This molecular altera-tion potentially drives a pro-tumorigenic intra-cellular epigenetic landscape. Our preliminary studies suggest that ES cells are markedly sensitive to histone deacetylase inhibition (HDACi) and we hypoth-esize that this occurs through the reversal of INI1-loss driven gene expression deregulations. We propose the following molecularly-driven translational Aims: Aim#1: To unravel INI1-loss dependent ES gene expression signatures and evaluate whether HDACis can reverse these pro- tumorigenic profiles and induce epigenetic reprogrammingAim#2: To examine the effects of HDACis on ES cellular properties in vitro and on the growth, recurrence, and metastasis of ES in vivo HDACi are currently being clinically tested as an anti-cancer therapeutic approach in a large and diverse array of malignancies. Insights derived from our proposed studies will enhance our understanding of ES biology and will hopefully lay the foundation for future HDACi-based clinical trials for ES.

edward Greenfield, Phd Case Western Reserve University Recipient of the Mark Herzlich Research AwardA small molecule inhibitor of AXL is a novel therapeutic strategy in osteosarcoma Abstract: Despite aggressive surgical and chemotherapeutic approaches, the survival rate among osteosarcoma patients who pres-ent with metastasis is ~25% and is ~70% in those who present without metastasis. These survival rates have not improved in the last few decades. A better understanding of osteosarcoma pathophysiology is therefore needed to allow development of novel therapeutic approach-es. RTK activation is responsible for progression of many forms of cancer, and inhibitors of these RTKs are a majority of the most promis-ing anticancer drugs. Our recent phospho-proteomic and functional genomic screening showed that a RTK known as AXL contributes to the in vitro phenotype of highly metastatic human 143B osteosarcoma cells. Moreover, we also found that a relatively specific inhibitor of AXL that blocks metastasis of other types of cancer also reduces mo-tility, invasion, and colony formation by the osteosarcoma cells. AXL will therefore be the focus of this proposal and our overall hypothesis is that AXL is a novel metabolic target in osteosarcoma. This hypoth-esis will be tested by the following Aims: AIM 1: Determine the role of AXL in tumorigenesis and me-tastasis in murine xenograft models of osteosarcoma. This aim will measure the in vivo effects of shRNA-mediated knockdown of AXL on tumorigenesis and metastasis by 143B human osteosarcoma cells. Experiments will include both the orthotopic tibial implantation model and the tail vein injection model. AIM 2: Determine the therapeutic effect of the AXL inhibitor on tumorigenesis and metastasis in murine xenograft models of osteosarcoma. This aim will measure the in vivo effects of the AXL inhibitor on tumorigenesis and metastasis in the same murine models used in Aim 1. Successful completion of this project would determine whether AXL is a promising metabolic target, and whether the inhibitor is a promising therapeutic approach, for osteosarcoma that should be evaluated in future studies.

Martin G. Belinsky, PhD Fox Chase Cancer CenterRecipient of the Sarcoma Foundation of America Research AwardComprehensive mutational analysis of gastrointestinal stromal tumors lacking activating mutations in the KIT, PDGFRA, and BRAF genes Abstract: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are mesen-chymal neoplasms that generally harbor activating kinase mutations in either KIT or PDGFRA. GISTs respond to front-line treatment with the specific kinase inhibitor imatinib mesylate (IM). However,

approximately 15% of adult GISTs lack mutations in these kinases and respond poorly to IM. Activating mutations in the serine-threonine ki-nase BRAF have been identified in a minority (~7%) of KIT/PDGFRA mutation-negative GISTs, suggesting that somatic mutations in other kinases may be responsible for the onset of a subset of GIST. In Aim 1 of this proposal we propose deep exome sequencing of paired constitutional and GIST DNA from four adult patients whose tumors lack KIT/PDGFRA/BRAF mutations in order to identify so-matic mutations that may be oncogenic. Although we hypothesize that dominant-active kinase mutations in these tumors are responsible for GIST oncogenesis, exome-wide sequencing will ensure that variants in all genes will be examined. We will also examine other mechanisms for oncogenesis, for example by capturing genes with somatic changes in the tumors in addition to novel germline variants in the patients. Variant analysis will be facilitated by comparisons with the existing SNP database, with the database of variants from the 1,000 Genomes project, and with the growing database of exome sequences available within our institution. Genes with confirmed somatic mutations in the exome-wide anal-ysis will be further examined in a candidate gene analysis as described in Aim 2 of this proposal. The goal is to determine the frequency and spectrum of genetic changes in these genes within a larger panel of GIST tumors, using as comparison constitutional DNA from these patients where available as well as a large panel of constitutional DNA from unaffected individuals. The outcome of these analyses will be a set of novel therapeutic targets for the treatment of GIST refractory to standard therapy.

nita Ahuja, md Johns Hopkins UniversityRecipient of a Sarcoma Foundation of America Research AwardEpigenetic changes and epigenetic therapy in retroperitoneal liposarcomas Abstract: Retroperitoneal liposarcomas are rare tumors and the only effective treatment is surgery. However, local recurrence is com-mon after surgery and is the major cause of death. Due to the rarity of these tumors, little is known about the underlying abnormalities. Epigenetic changes, such as DNA methylation of promoter-asso-ciated CpG islands resulting in transcriptional silencing, are known to be frequent mechanisms of silencing tumor suppressor genes in most common human cancers. However, little is known about the epigenetic alterations in liposarcomas. DNA hypermethylation of tumor suppres-sor genes as p16 and Wnt pathway genes as APC has been described in small series of liposarcomas suggesting that epigenetic alterations may play an important role in pathogenesis of liposarcomas. Furthermore, a prior study suggested that epigenetic therapy may cause terminal differentiation of liposarcoma cell line to adipocytes. We hypothesize that epigenetic alterations occur frequently in liposarcomas and such alterations may be used to define prognostic biomarkers. Furthermore, we hypothesize that epigenetic therapy may have a role in treatment of liposarcomas.

Our laboratory has experience in developing prognostic epigen-etic markers and is currently testing epigenetic therapy in solid tumors in clinical trials. Moreover, our center has a high-volume multidis-ciplinary sarcoma team which provides a strong foundation for our proposed sarcoma research. In the current proposal, we plan to 1) Identify the epigenetic changes that occur frequently in retroperitoneal liposarcomas; 2) Identify biomarkers that predict survival and response to treatment in retroperitoneal liposarcomas; and 3) Test the efficacy of combination epigenetic therapy in vivo mouse models of liposarcoma. Our longterm goals are to understand the epigenetic changes that occur in retroperitoneal liposarcomas and define prognostic biomarkers as well as determine the utility of epigenetic therapy in sarcomas.

Marilyn D. Resh, PhD Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer CenterRecipient of a Sarcoma Foundation of America Research AwardHedgehog palmitoylation inhibitors to block sarcoma growth Abstract: Hedgehog (Hh) signaling has been implicated in the pathogenesis of several types of sarcomas. The goal of the proposed research is to develop drugs that block modification of Hh proteins with palmitate and thereby prevent Hh mediated growth of human sarcomas. In order to signal correctly, Hh must be modified by attach-ment of the 16-carbon fatty acid palmitate to its N-terminus. We aim to exploit Hh palmitoylation as a potential Achilles heel by targeting Hhat (Hedgehog acyltransferase), the enzyme that catalyzes attach-ment of palmitate to Hh. My laboratory developed an in vitro Hh palmitoylation assay that is dependent on Hhat activity. The assay was optimized for High Throughput Screening (HTS) to identify small molecule inhibitors of Hhat. We completed the HTS, identified multiple “hits”, and chose 4 lead compounds. Since palmitoylation is required for Hh function, Hhat inhibitors that block Hh palmitoylation could be developed into novel chemotherapeutics that will be effica-cious in the treatment of sarcoma. Aim 1) To determine the effect of Hhat and Hh depletion on sarcoma cell proliferation. Human sarcoma cells will be transduced with lentiviruses encoding ShRNAs directed against Shh, Dhh, Ihh or Hhat and the effects on cell proliferation, survival and migration will be determined. Aim 2) To identify small molecule inhibitors of Hhat that inhibit proliferation of sarcoma cells in tissue culture and in animal models. We will assess the ability of selected Hhat inhibitors to inhibit prolif-eration, survival and migration of human sarcoma cell lines in vitro. Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamic parameters for the Hhat inhibitors will be determined in mice. The effects of Hhat inhibitors in a xenograft tumor model in vivo will then be assayed. The most effec-tive inhibitors will be derivatized and assayed for further therapeutic development.

An SFA research grant awarded in 2006 to Dr. Brent Sockwell at Columbia University led to promising discoveries culminating in the recent formation of Solaris Therapeutics, a start-up biotech company. Dr. Stockwell, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Fellow and Associate Professor at Columbia’s Department of Biological Sciences and Department of Chemistry, received the SFA grant to support his research into some 40,000 compounds for their ability to inhibit MDM2 E3 ligase activity in a cell-based assay, an unexplored pathway to inhibit cancer. From this research, Dr. Stockwell discovered several drug candidates that were considered potentially suitable for further development. These compounds are considered to have the potential to reveal a new strategy for eliminating sarcomas containing the NDM2 oncogene, and might serve as a proof of concept for a new class of anti-sarcoma agents.

n Lori Capon In 2003, at age 28, Lori, a planner by nature, was busy planning her dream wedding to her now-husband, Josh. Five months before the big day, she had a “probably-nothing” lump removed from her ankle. Upon learning it was a rare soft tissue sarcoma, Lori, surrounded by family, began a new type of planning, one for her treatment and recovery. After consulting with Dr. Raphael Pollock at MD Anderson, she had radiation at Beth Israel Medical Center. In the spring of 2004, Lori walked down the aisle as planned and cancer-free. She never looked back and happily, the cancer has never come back. Feeling so incredibly lucky for her success with such a rare cancer, Lori became dedicated to and active with the Sarcoma Founda-tion of America, helping to fund a $450,000 research grant. Lori lives in Manhattan with Josh and their two incredible chil-dren, Amanda and Max.

n Gail H. Cassell, PhD In January 2005, Gail was diagnosed with breast cancer. Six weeks after celebrating the five-year milestone of normal mammo-grams, she was diagnosed with an angiosarcoma, associated with the radiation treatment she received in 2005. This was particularly chal-lenging for her because she has been engaged in biomedical research her entire career. As President of the American Society for Microbiol-ogy and a long-term board member of Research!America, she has given over 20 Congressional testimonies in favor of increasing federal support for research funding for the National institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Food and Drug Administration. Gail has been a strong advocate for partnerships with governmental agencies, academia, and industry so as to attract the most outstanding scientists in each field to tackle serious and complex diseases. In fact, at the peak of her career in academia, she transitioned to the pharmaceutical industry to foster these partnerships and to trans-late basic research into new therapies. Much to her disappointment, within 24 hours after her diagno-sis, Gail realized how little research has been done in sarcomas in general and in radiation associated angiosarcomas in particular. Few therapeutic options are available that are evidence based. In particular randomized clinical trials are lacking. She considers herself extremely fortunate to have been able to rapidly seek treatment at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Both the pre-operative chemotherapy and the surgery were based on cutting-edge research under the guidance of leading investigators, Drs. George Demetri and Chan Raut, giving her reason for optimism and the will to continue her career.

n Michael Mandell After undergoing both Moh’s and plastic surgery to remove what was originally diagnosed as a spindle cell carcinoma on his nose, Michael Mandell thought he’d experienced his share of trauma. How-ever, when a small spot re-appeared, he asked for another biopsy. Four months and several misdiagnoses later, Mike was informed he had angiosarcoma. Retesting of the original tumor confirmed the diagnosis. The devastating news sent Mike, his family and close friends on a search for specialists and answers, both of which they found were in rare supply. Mike went to some well-known sarcoma centers and then ultimately got treatment consisting of chemotherapy, radiation and surgery at the University of Miami Sylvester Cancer Center. Today, he is a seven-year survivor of sarcoma. Mike’s challenges in dealing with his illness moved him to action. He became the Florida State Chapter Leader and soon thereafter was elected as a Board Member for the Sarcoma Foundation of America (SFA). Now in its fourth year, the Annual 5K Run/Walk for a Sarcoma Cure he established has helped raise over $137,000 to fund three sarcoma research grants for the SFA. Additionally, he is working with several cancer and educational institutions to facilitate seminars throughout the state to provide education and advocacy efforts on behalf of sarcoma patients and medical research. Beyond his work with SFA, Mike has been actively involved in the community. He has served as a youth administrator for the Plantation Athletic League and coached his sons in baseball for more than 12 years. In his day job, Mike has been Corporate Collections Manager for the past 18 years at Ryder System, Inc., a Fortune 500® provider of transportation and supply chain management solutions. Mike resides in Plantation, FL with Heidi, his wife of 21 years, and sons Eric and Kyle.

n Gail Palajac Gail Palajac’s diagnosis of Myxofibro-sarcoma in February 2003 came as a complete surprise to her since the growth in her shoulder was originally believed to be benign. Waking up in that initial recovery room, the first words her husband said to her were, “I have some bad news.” Those five words began a long journey over the next six years, which included 25 radiation treatments and another five surgeries to remove multiple malignant tumors in the left shoulder and anterior chest wall, as they returned in 12 – 24 month intervals. Six rounds of highly toxic chemotherapy enabled an additional limb-saving proce-dure at MD Anderson in March 2009. However, being “cancerfree” was short lived. The tumors returned within the next six months and this time the option list was short. A left forequarter amputation was the only procedure that offered any chance of eradicating this disease.

$1.1 Million Raised for Sarcoma Research The 2011 SFA gala set new records in attendance and in funds raised for sarcoma research. “I don’t think any of us could have expected this event to have been more successful,” says Dr. Mark Thornton, SFA President. An overflow audience of more than 600 guests at Cipriani in New York City donated more than $1.1 million for sarcoma research, a new record for the SFA. This year’s gala marks SFA’s 10th anniversary and was co-chaired by Richard Lobo, Susan Brooks O’Rourke, and LuAnn Woodbury. Singers/songwriters and SFA Spokespersons Rufus and Martha Wainwright, served as Honorary Chairpersons for this year’s spring gala, during which, Rufus gave an amazing impromptu a cappella rendition of “Somewhere over the Rainbow.” The evening’s gala program was hosted by Mistress of Ceremonies, Julie Chang, entertainment reporter for WNYW/Fox 5 in New York. JoMarie and Vincent Pica received the Vision of Hope Award for their tireless dedication to the SFA and their leadership role with each annual gala. In addition to providing family sponsorships in support of the annual gala, JoMarie Pica has served on gala benefit committees, chaired several galas, as well as served on the SFA Board. This year’s Nobility in Science Award went to Dr. Raphael E. Pollock of MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, for his lifetime of professional dedication to care of the solid tumor patient as well as laboratory research. Entertainment featured a surprise guest performance by American Idol finalist Casey Abrams and a performance by the cast members from the hit Broadway musical memPhIS. The evening’s program was punctuated by some very poignant moments, especially when SFA invited Courage Award recipients on stage for well-deserved recognition and a standing ovation from everyone in attendance. Michael Mandell, SFA Board member and the Chapter Leader of the SFA Florida Chapter, was one of the night’s Courage Award recipients. Additional Courage Award

Although this was devastating news for the left-hander, the amputation was performed in December 2009. Today, Gail is busy turning her pain into purpose, taking part in a soon-to-be-released video, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, about pain management and cancer. Gail regularly volunteers in her community and at her church. Her most important work, though, is at the University of Michigan’s Cancer Center as a Care Ambassador where she visits weekly with the cancer patients and relates to them and their struggles with the disease by sharing her experiences. Gail celebrated her birthday in 2011 by jumping out of a perfectly good airplane from 14,000 feet to experience the thrill of tandem skydiving. Gail also has multiple myeloma but has been in complete remission since receiving an autologous stem cell transplant in the fall of 2007.

n Rita Saverino Romeo Rita Saverino Romeo was born in Reggio Calabria, Italy. She immigrated to the United States with her parents when she was three. After graduating high school, she had a summer job on Wall Street and instead of going back to college that fall, she decided to pursue a career on Wall Street. She continued to get her college degree at night and on the weekends and graduated from Columbia University. As of the summer of 2011, she will have been working on Wall Street for 29 years, both with Citibank and now Deutsche Bank. Rita started as a currency trader in the field of Foreign Currency and went on to run trading desks at Citi and DB. After trading, she began doing product development in the new developing eCommerce space. She has been married to her husband, Joseph Romeo, for fifteen years and they have two beautiful children, Luca and Matthew. In December of 2010, Rita was diagnosed with sarcoma. Fortunately, thanks to many serendipitous encounters with survivors who beat the odds, she has had the courage to hope, and with the courage to hope comes the courage to believe. The courage to believe that there can be a cure, that miracles do happen and that rare does not mean fatal, only that there is less research and fewer cases. Since her diagnosis, Rita has been raising money for sarcoma research while receiving chemotherapy and underwent surgery the week of the SFA gala.

n Mary Ellen Rumore Mary Ellen’s journey began five years ago. She was in tremen-dous pain and had been misdiagnosed by numerous doctors, both medical and homeopathic. After diminishing from 140 pounds to 88 pounds and being told she was anorexic, her relief finally came when divine intervention connected her to a doctor that looked at her, finally listened and knew that something was terribly wrong. After a major surgery, Mary Ellen was properly diagnosed with leiomyosarcoma. After two extensive surgeries, radiation, cyberknife and five clinical trials, Mary Ellen is still fighting with a strength she never knew she had and a strong desire to give hope to anyone battling a rare cancer. Mary Ellen’s prayer is for research that leads to a cure, and she

encourages patients to empower themselves so that more doctors listen carefully and recognize the signs of this horrific disease. Her dream is to write a book entitled, “There’s Nothing Wrong With you Sweetie!” as told to her by way too many doctors. Through believing in a higher power and with the support of family and friends, Mary Ellen was able to work full time as a sales consultant and she continued to enjoy the blessings of life.

n Atara Schweky After graduating high school in 2003, Atara Schweky travelled the world meeting with doctors to diagnose swelling in her left leg. After a year of travelling, Atara met with Dr. Pollock at MD Anderson Cancer Center and learned that she had a Desmoid tumor. After a very intricate 9-hour surgery and radiation treatments, Atara is still fighting with her Desmoid tumor but has learned to not let it consume her. In between travelling from New York to Texas for treatments, Atara completed college at Queens College City University with a major in Sociology. After all that Atara has experienced with her health, she has become fascinated by nutrition and plans to go back to school to receive a Masters in Nutrition and Food Science. For now, Atara works from home selling healthy vegan food and teaching vegan and vegetar-ian cooking classes, trying to spread the wealth of knowledge on how a healthy diet can make for a healthier and happier way of living. Atara is looking forward to becoming more active with the SFA and all that it serves to accomplish. Last December 22, Atara and her husband Isaac welcomed a beautiful, healthy baby boy into the world named Edward.

n JoMarie & Vincent Pica JoMarie and Vincent Pica have been married 36 years this June and have three children. Natalie, an MD/PHD Fellow at the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine, was married last summer to Ryan Friend. Their son Rudi works for JP Morgan in Private Wealth Management and their daughter Mariel, a soon-to-be graduate of Convent of the Sacred Heart, will be attending Lehigh University this fall. They are all on the Jr. Benefit Committee and reside in New York City. Vincent, after working on Wall Street for 25 years for EF Hutton & Company and Prudential Securities, went into the private investing business in 2002. He is Managing Partner and President of Safanad, Inc., the US arm of Safanad Ltd., with offices in New York, Geneva and Riyadh. Vincent has also been a member of the US Coast Guard Forces as an Auxiliar-ist since 2002. He is currently the Chief of Staff of the First District Southern Region. JoMarie worked for a variety of magazines and in television before becoming a full time mother. While raising her children, she was actively involved in many philanthropic endeavors, raising money for annual funds, capital campaigns, chairing events, on many committees and serving on many boards. The Pica’s became deeply involved with the SFA when their dear friend Paul Rumely was diagnosed with sarcoma and in 2004 JoMarie ran the NYC Marathon

to raise money for the SFA in his honor! Soon after, another friend was diagnosed with uterine sarcoma and when both of these brave individuals lost their fight, the Pica’s became even more committed to the SFA. As well as providing family sponsorships, JoMarie has served on gala benefit committees, chaired several galas, as well as served on the SFA Board. “We thank everyone for supporting us and the SFA for many years. A cure for sarcoma brings us closer to a cure for all cancers! It is our ‘Vision of Hope’ that we find a cure in our lifetime!”

SFA is establishing SFA Chapters to support the fulfillment of our mission and to increase our grassroots outreach. The goal is to have a Chapter Leader in all 50 states and beyond. Visit www.curesarcoma.org to contact the Chapter Leader in your state. SFA welcomes inquiries from community-minded individuals who are interested in volunteering as a Chapter Leader or assiting a Chapter Leader in planning SFA activities in your state or country.

We are pleased to announce that four new chapter leaders have been added to the SFA’s state chapter network in California, Pennsylvania and in Texas. Joanna and Bryan Brooks of Houston, Texas, Sue Embree-Davis from Vallejo, California, and Stephen Capuzzi from the Institute of Catholic Bioethics at St. Joseph’s university in Philadelphia have brought some added enthusiasm in three major markets for SFA’s mission to advocate for increased research to find new and better therapies to treat patients with sarcoma. According to CA Chapter Leader Sue Embree-Davis, “Often families and friends of a newly diagnosed loved one feel so helpless to do anything meaningful to be of assistance. A fundraiser can help to gather everyone together to do something positive for their loved one and to promote future research toward finding a cure for these aggressive and rare cancers.” You can reach out to your chapter leader by going to www.curesarcoma.org and clicking on your respective state. We can always use more help.
