Seychelles' first Boat Show at Eden Island Marina North The celebrations of this year's National Day will take on a whole new dimension with the country's first ever national boat show to be held at the Eden Island Marina North.

The stage is set, the berths on the North-side of Eden Bridge await the stars of the three-day spectacle.

From personal leisure craft to the vessels of national maritime agencies and commercial luxury yachts, the more the merrier in a show which was conceived to exhibit the wide spectrum of boats which ride the Seychelles waves.

In the past, tuna was traditionally loaded manually from fishing vessels onto purpose-built 'reefer' vessels, often referred to as trampers, which transported tuna around the world in refrigerated holds.

From this point came the introduction of the 'reefer' container (a container with a built-in refrigeration system) which meant that tuna could be stuffed manually into a container which could then be loaded onto and transported by a standard cargo ship along with standard 'dry' containers.

The fishing boat owners derive substantial benefit from this service. The use of

containers enables them to sort their fish by size and allows them to penetrate

smaller markets worldwide. There is also no need for double handling of the

high quality fish which contributes to maximizing the revenue of boat owners

for this market.

The Fish Loader is a machine conceived to further revolutionize the value chain by introducing the mechanized loading of tuna into reefer containers, with the immediate aim of increasing efficiency and effectiveness in the export of tuna around the world.

Interestingly, in 2008, Port Victoria in Seychelles became the first country in the world to make use of the first two specimens of the Maersk Fish Loader. Since then, another four fish loaders have been added to the fleet, with the most recent two addi-tions having been further fine-tuned to continue to improve the device's yield.

While the earlier models needed to be towed from one job to the next, the new loaders, having been built upon a truck’s chas-sis, can be driven to their destination and begin operations immediately. This enhancement also increases accessibility to more areas such as the pier on Zone 14, where the rough terrain previously meant that the towed unit was at a high risk of being ob-structed along the way.

Indeed, the benefits of the fish loader have not gone unnoticed. Aside from their impressive productivity, higher sanitary levels and a higher quality end product, the more flexible movement of tuna in reefer containers has boosted the export figure for Seychelles considerably as the fish loader helps to support an increasing number of fishing fleets to Seychelles. Today Seychelles has a total of 10 such companies operating as compared to a handful when commercial fishing first started in the 70s.

On the local scene, the fish loader has prompted a welcomed increase in job opportunities for local people in areas such as ste-vedoring, mechanics and maintenance. ~ Acknowledgments: Vincent Didon & Alex Barbier

Few who live or work in Victoria have failed to notice the rapidly evolving structure which is currently sprouting on the curb of Manglier Street.

Construction is in full swing with the aim of having all floors cast by the end of May 2015. All finishing items and services have either been ordered or secured with views of ensur-ing the set completion date within the first quarter of 2016.

So what's new with The Quadrant, you say? What was initially planned to be a four-storey

building will now accommodate one more level, making it one of the few five-storey buildings in Victoria.

Aside from that, the rest of the plan is unchanged: sub-level car park, retail space on ground level, office and/or retail space on upper levels and luxury apartments enjoying sea and mountain views at the top.

As for Hunt, Deltel & Co. Ltd., after 16 busy years in the shelter and comfort of Trinity House, most departments of the company's current head quarters will indeed be housed within the new building.

The dialogue with prospective tenants is lively and ongoing, however we are happy to announce the building's ground floor will benefit from a harmonious mixture of services; one multi-branch supermarket, one electronics brand shop, a wine shop, a jeweler's and a stationery shop.

Going Green: Sustainable Practice at HD

DHL Express Seychelles Using Recycled Paper for

Packing

With two new shredders at Head Office over the past

month, the company is mak-ing a conscious effort to up its ante on the sustainable disposal of its paper waste.

As much as possible, all scrap paper is to be shredded and offered to the DHL Ex-press team who are generally only too happy to accept the

free packing material.

Robert Etienne, manager of our Transport Department recently reported that the rain water harvesting system at Hunt, Deltel's new facility has made a marked positive impact on the transport fleet's maintenance costs. At the time of writing, the underground tanks contained a volume of ap-proximately 75,000 litres of harvested rainwater from the roofs above.

The purpose-built conditions at the facility have also had a knock-on effect on the condition of the company's vehicles, needing fewer trips to Hunt, Deltel's workshop at Providence. The space has also allowed for a wel-comed system of staff rotation amongst in-house mechanics, between the large plant hire vehicles at the fleet logistics centre and the company cars being maintained at the workshop.

The PV System on the roof in turn has also got its share to write home about, generating an average monthly yield of 13,450 units per month com-pared to an average usage of 5,857 units per month.

From 24th to 27th March 2015, 115 winners from the Sub-Saharan region of Africa were united in Abu Dhabi on the oc-casion of the DHL Express Employee of the Year Award Ceremony. The group was treated to 3 days of luxury and adventure, including an all-expenses-paid-for stay at the Viceroy Hotel, a trip to Ferrari World, a tour of the city and a charity treasure hunt.

"The news that I had been chosen as the employee of the year came as a big sur-prise. The trip to Abu Dhabi was an even bigger one. Upon my arrival there, I

was amazed by the VIP treatment received. It was truly a dream trip...It was a once in a lifetime chance to meet the top management of DHL international and I got acquainted to the other DHL staff from other countries in Af-rica. The final event was the award ceremony which was held in the desert. It was a red carpet event. The CEO of DHL Express, Mr Ken Allen gave a warm welcome to all the award winners and also presented us with our awards. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my Manager Ms Corine Clarisse and the DHL Seychelles team be-cause without their support I would not have had this amazing opportunity. The award stands for the four key at-tributes that I have been practicing during my years at DHL, my speed, my can-do-attitude, my passion and trying my best to always do it right the first time. I believe the award I have received is not for my own gain but for the whole DHL team and I sincerely hope that one of my colleagues will get the chance to receive this award in the fu-ture." Mervin is 30 years old and has been working with DHL since 2011. He is a senior courier within a team of 11 other Seychellois.

Trademarks Department - New Industrial Property Act, 2014

The Seychelles Parliament recently passed the new Industrial Property Act 7 of 2014. The new Act also makes provision for the registration and protection of patents and industrial designs which were previously only possible through the extension of a United Kingdom Design. In addition, the new Act covers unfair competition and sets out specific acts or practices which are contrary to honest practices and therefore constitute acts of unfair compe-tition.

With regard to the most significant changes in relation to trade marks, in line with the Paris Convention, the new legislation makes express provision for the protection of well-known marks, where the mark is well-known in the Seychelles. Cont. on page 10.

Maritime Training Centre

With a vision 'To be an internationally accred-ited Centre of Excel-lence in Maritime Edu-cation and Training'

it should be no wonder as to why the Maritime Training Centre is amongst Hunt, Deltel's annual CSR benefactors.

It was a pleasure to witness the 2014 cohort of students proudly accepting their certificates and awards.

It was also refreshing to see the number of female students amongst the group, including 3 out of the 6 best performer award-winners for their chosen field.

Equally inspiring was the testimony of Ms. Connie Anthony sharing her experiences as a maritime student at a maritime college in the UK. Indeed if her intention was to encourage perseverance and passion for those aspiring to be part of the adventure that is the maritime industry, she hit the nail on the head. In her immaculately pressed white uniform, speaking with the confidence of a young lady who knows that hard work pays off, hats off to her for daring to aim sky-high in a largely male-dominated industry.

ENVIRONMENT. Sustainability for Seychelles is a local NGO set up in

2007 to promote sustainable living in Seychelles. Their projects address issues such as energy, water, climate change, sustainable tourism, sustainable communities and waste. One of the biggest projects S4S is tackling at present is focused on sustainable waste management. The NGO hosted a waste stakeholder workshop in February 2015 which brought participants from the private sector, government and civil society together to look at the present situation and come up with realistic strategies for reducing, re-using and recycling waste in the country, where

everyone has an active role to play. Following some of the recommendations from this workshop, S4S is plan-ning to help upscale recycling by placing bins for PET and drink cans around Victoria and busy public beaches like Beau Vallon, Anse Royale and Cote D’Or. The bins will be emptied by individuals who collect these recyclables from the streets, making their job easier because the drink containers will not be mixed in with regular dirty rubbish.

The scheme will be advertised on television and other media, but will require active cooperation from the public to work successfully. Everyone can help! Contributed by Michele Martin from Sustainability for Seychelles

SPORTS. SSFC - National Fishing

Tournament. Between 17th April and 19th April, 12

boats were on the high seas vying for a prize at the SSFC Seychelles National Fishing Tournament. After 33 hours the weigh-in was complete and winners of 28 various categories by fish species were determined. The winner was decided on a point-based system whereby only the 2 heaviest fish are weighed per category, encouraging a more sustainable approach to sports fishing away from the former tradition of awarding only as per total weight. In this way, there is more emphasis on fishing technique and quality of catch as opposed to quantity.

The SSFC received the excellent news of a pending World Record at the weigh-in. Congratulations to Mangi Katana a Kenyan member of the 8-man crew onboard the Cabo Express 45 named Alati of the A1 Fishing fleet, for bringing in their 8kg Rusty Jobfish, beating the pre-vious World Record of 6.6kg.

ART. Seychelles Art Projects

Foundation While the Biennale di Venezia

celebrates 56 years in existence, this year will be the first time that Seychelles is represented. Con-sidering that the total population of the Sey-chelles is 90,000 the country has a surprising number of artists. Yet few people other than those that have visited the country are aware of the nature and character of the contemporary art landscape.

Contemporary art in Seychelles reflects the won-derful mix and variety of the population as well as the interaction between the country's environ-ment and economy.

The two artists participating in the Biennale express their messages in very different ways.

Leon Radegonde's work delves deeply into the past of Seychelles. The ghosts of dead slaves. The smudge of the unrecognised and unvalued, those who lived in obscurity, leaving only a small image behind.

George Camille on the other hand explores the interface between the environment and culture. The main material used in Mr. Camille's installation, a 'hanging garden', is high tension electrical cable twisted by hand into the iconog-raphy of the forest, where invasive creepers choke indigenous plants.

This exhibition is designed to be the first but not the last time that Seychellois artists have access to the important stage of La Biennale di Venezia. ~ Extract from official press release

Cont. from page 7. With regard to the most significant changes in relation to trade marks, in line with the Paris Convention, the new legislation makes express provision for the protection of well-known marks, where the mark is well-known in the Seychelles.

While the provision for the registration of defensive marks has fallen away under the new Act, collective marks, three dimensional marks, geographical indicators and trade names have been added to this list.

It must be mentioned that while the Trade Marks Decree provided that a trade mark is valid for a period of 7 years and is thereafter renewable for periods of 14 years, the new Act provides that a registration shall be valid for a period of 10 years from the filing date of the application and is thereafter renewable for consecutive periods of 7 years. A 6 month grace period is allowed for the renewal of a registration, along with the payment of a penalty fee.

Proprietors of marks already registered in Seychelles should take note that the relevant time pe-riod for cancellation on the basis of non-use will change under the new legislation from 5 years to an uninterrupted period of 3 years.

A further noteworthy provision is the allowance for use of a registered mark in comparative ad-vertising, provided that use of the mark is not of such a nature as to deceive the public and does not constitute unfair competition.

The new legislation came into force as of 1st March 2015 and the new regulations, fees and forms are now available from any registered agent.

To note, the transitional provisions expressly state that the new Act shall apply to any application pending on the date of commencement of the Act and any marks registered under the repealed Trade Marks Decree shall remain valid and be deemed to have been granted or registered under the new Act. ~ Acknowledgments: Adams & Adams Online Resource Centre
