Examples – Homosexual
Hollyoaks
• In hollyoaks there are two homosexual girls who start a relationship.
• However both of these girls go against the stereotype of heterosexual females because instead of being butch they are both extremely feminine and girly.
• For example in the clip I was looking at, Tilly was wearing a short blue dress with a pink ribbon in her hear and you wouldn’t normally associate this with heterosexual females.
• Therefore Hollyoaks challenges hegemony
Eastenders
• Eastenders also includes a heterosexual couple. • Christian shows the stereotype of gay men
because he cares about his appearance and works out. As well as this, he has a high pitched voice that does not sound masculine.
• He also has typical behaviour of a heterosexual, for example he makes a dramatic scene over something so simple.
Eastenders• This shows the contrast between straight and gay
characters, because in Eastenders the heterosexual characters are shown as tough and trouble makers.
• For Example, Phil is always getting into trouble, and his look is a lot of rough for example his shaven head, and the shirts and jeans he wears makes him appear tough.
• As well as this, the jobs Christian and Phil do show their sexuality as Christian works in a gym again showing he cares about appearance where as Phil owns a car garage, so he doesn’t mind cracking down into a ‘mans’ job.
