2.3 General information

The nominal power and torques mentioned in the catalog depend on the input speed and are valid for a service factor of FS = 1.0 and constant, unidirectional load. Only 70% of these values apply in the case of changing load directions. The values in parameter table show nominal powers and torques for input speeds of 1000 rpm to 1800 rpm. The nominal torque classes also apply to input speeds of 3% less than the synchronous speed. Contact SEW-EURODRIVE for speeds >1800 rpm.

2.3.1 Nominal power, torques and input speeds

The subsequent chapters provide general information of the ML..V..N series gear units.

Self-aligning, cylindrical, tapered roller bearings and thrust bearing from well-known manufacturers are used.

Pressure lubrication is recommended.

An oil level glass is used to visually check the oil level.

Instead of the oil drain plug, an oil drain valve can be provided. This ball valve allows for a drain line to be easily attached when changing the gear unit oil.

An oil heater might be necessary when ambient temperatures are low. The oil heater ensures that the oil is sufficiently liquid when starting up the gear unit in cold environments. SEW-EURODRIVE provides the oil heater with a preset thermostat that is attached to the gear unit.

The gear unit housings are made of steel welding. The housing is a two-piece housing with horizontal parting line.

2.3.7 Drywell sealing system

The gear units with the output shaft pointing downwards are available with dry well sealing system. Each gear unit is equipped with a drywell sealing system with pressure lubrication (motor pump or shaft end pump) to ensure sufficient lubrication of the upper bearing and the gearing.

Several optional accessories are available for industrial gear units.

• Pressure lubrication with cooler: A pressure lubrication system with cooler is used when the thermal rating of the basic

gear unit is not sufficient. A cooler is used in operating environments where a fan can not be used or is not sufficient. • Shaft end pump

If condition is permitted, shaft end pump can be used, when adequate space must be allowed for it.

• Fan:

A cooling fan is used when the thermal rating of the gear unit is insufficient. Radial fan is bi-directional.

• Oil heater: The oil heating system ensures that the oil is in a suitable viscosity range when starting

up the gear unit in cold environments. • PT100 temperature sensor: The PT100 temperature sensor can be used to measure the temperature of the oil in

the gear unit. • DUO10A diagnostic unit (oil aging): The DUO10A diagnostic unit was developed for advance planning of oil changes. The oil types used by SEW are recorded in the evaluation unit, wherein a type of oil

approved by SEW-EURODRIVE can be customized. • DUV10A diagnostic unit (vibration diagnostics): The DUV10A diagnostic unit provides a vibration analysis value, in which it uses fre-

quency analysis methods to evaluate vibration signals from the gear unit.

The gear unit is delivered on a pallet without cover. Application: Land transport

SEW-EURODRIVE gear units conform to ISO and DIN specifications. SEW-EURODRIVE is a member of the AGMA (American Gear Manufacturers’ Associa-tion), if need gear units conform to AGMA specifications, please consult SEW-EURODRIVE.

2.3.9 Thermal rating The thermal rating needs to be checked for every gear unit. The relevant values are listed

in the selection tables on chapter 4.4.

2.3.10 Cooling If the thermal rating of the gear unit is insufficient with natural cooling, you can choose one of the following cooling types:

• Fan (independent of direction of rotation) on the drive shaft for ML3RV..N gear units. • Oil supply system with oil-water heat exchanger or oil-air heat exchanger.

On request, all gear units can be supplied with special surface protection for applications in extremely humid and chemically aggressive environments.

2.3.11 Surface and corrosion protection

Please note that all weights shown for the gear units in this catalog are guide values and do not include the lubricant. Refer to the dimension drawings for recommended oil quantities for the respective gear unit types. You find the exact gear unit weight in the order-specific dimension drawing.

• KR-939SB3 Three parameter integral probe: KR-939SB3 three-parameter integral probe is a non-bus universal probe used in

safety supervision control system. It simultaneously can monitor complete vibration of orthogonal directions, lubrication oil temperature and oil level of gear unit.

• High speed shaft (HSS) elastic coupling: Preselected HSS couplings are available for mounting to the input motor. Coupling

selection depends on motor power and gear unit size. • Low speed shaft (LSS) coupling: Preselected LSS gear coupling based on the nominal gear unit torque and output

shaft diameter. • Motor bracket: Motor mounting platform for V-belt driven input. • V-belt drive: Belt driven input. Includes motor bracket, pulleys, V-belt and belt guard.

Step 8: Checking the thermal rating PT

The thermal rating PT of a gear unit is the power that a gear unit can transmit continuously without exceeding a certain oil temperature.

The thermal rating PT depends on the following factors: • Ambient temperature • Air circulation and sunlight exposure at the installation site • Installation altitude • Heat conduction to the foundation at the installation site • Gear unit type, size and gear ratio • Type of gear unit external cooling • Type of gear unit lubrication • Lubricant type • Cyclic duration factor

You can calculate the thermal rating PT using the factors. The resulting calculation results are approximate values. Please contact SEW-EURODRIVE to determine the exact values.

If the thermal rating PT of a gear unit is not sufficient , then you can use a cooling system with circulation cooling. The proper size of the cooling system can be determined by approximation by means of the power loss PV of the gear unit.

The required cooling system is selected by using the tables (see chapters 6.1.2 and 6.1.3) of the various circulation cooling types. The operating power PK1 must not exceed the thermal rating PT (PK1 ≤ PT). Additional cooling is required if PK1 > PT 74.8 kW < 197.3 kW → Thermal rating is sufficient at 40 °C without additional cooling.

The oil viscosity and type (mineral/synthetic) to be used are determined by SEW-EURODRIVE specifically for each order. This information is noted in the order confirmation and on the gear unit's nameplate. Any deviation from these conditions requires consulta-tion with SEW-EURODRIVE.

3.3 Lubricant selection/lubricant table

Unless a special arrangement is made, SEW-EURODRIVE delivers the drives without oil fill. This does not apply to auxiliary drives and primary gear units.

3.3.1 General information on selecting the oil

This means the gear unit must be filled with the correct oil grade and quantity before startup. You find the corresponding information on the nameplate of the gear unit.

3.3.2 Permitted lubricants

• The standard for viscosity and oil grade is the type of oil that is specified by SEW-EURODRIVE in the order (see order confirmation and nameplate).

• Please consult SEW-EURODRIVE if you use bio and food grade lubricants or polygly-col oils.

• Check the compatibility of the greases and oils used.

The lubricant table shows the permitted lubricants for SEW-EURODRIVE gear units. Please note the abbreviations, meaning of shading and notes. CLP = Mineral oil CLP HC = Synthetic polyalphaolefin E = Ester oil (water hazard classification 1) = Mineral lubricant = Synthetic lubricant 3) = Use lubricants only when service factor FS ≥ 1.3 4) = Take into account critical startup behavior at low ambient temperatures 6) = Ambient temperature = Lubricant for the food industry (food grade oil) = Biodegradable oil (lubricant for agriculture, forestry, and water management)

• CLP oils according to DIN 51517-3 • Micro-pitting test according to FVA, FV no. 54/ I-IV, GFT class high, damage force

level >10 If synthetic oil is used, SEW-EURODRIVE recommends polyalphaolefin-based oil (CLP HC).

Permitted overhung loads and axial loads on the output shaft (LSS)

The following table shows the permitted overhung load on standard solid shafts that apply under the following conditions: • The application point of the overhung load is on the midpoint of the shaft end. • FR permitted overhung radial load when FS=1.0 and FA=0. • FA permitted axial load when FS=1.0 and FR=0.

6 Fan / Oil Heater

6.3 Fan Fan with optimized noise and flow engineering geometry are used. Fan can be retrofit-ted to raise the thermal rating or when the ambient conditions change after gear unit startup. The direction of rotation of the gear unit does not influence the operation of the fan.

6.4 Oil heater An oil heater is required to ensure lubrication during a cold gear unit startup when the ambient temperature is low. The minimum permitted ambient temperature for gear unit startup depends on the Viscosity (Max.2000cSt) of the oil that is used.

6.5 Condition monitoring 6.5.1 PT100 temperature sensor

The PT100 temperature sensor can be used to measure the temperature of the oil in the gear unit. The temperature sensor is located in the gear unit's oil sump.

6.5.2 DUO10A diagnostic unit (oil aging)

The DUO10A diagnostic unit was developed for advance planning of oil changes. The oil types used by SEW are recorded in the evaluation unit, wherein a type of oil approved by SEW-EURODRIVE can be customized.

6.5.3 DUV10A diagnostic unit (vibration diagnostics)

The DUV10A diagnostic unit provides a vibration analysis value, in which it uses frequency analysis methods to evaluate vibration signals from the gear unit.

6.5.4 KR-939SB3 Three parameter integral probe

KR-939SB3 three-parameter integral probe is a non-bus universal probe used in safety supervision control system. It simultaneously can monitor complete vibration of orthogo-nal directions, lubrication oil temperature and oil level of gear unit.
