2 Reference projects in the food and beverage industry
In 2009, the Peruvian company Lindley Corpora-
tion S. A., official bottler and distributor of Coca
Cola in Peru, began a modernization project for
its production systems. A number of their con-
veyor lines were equipped with the latest tech-
nology, including MOVIGEAR®. This mechatronic
drive system from SEW-EURODRIVE is extremely
energy efficient. During installation, the sig-
nificantly reduced amount of cable material
required proved to be an additional advantage.
The first project was completed in fall 2009. In
the port city Callao, which makes up the Lima
metropolitan region along with Lima, the capital,
Lindley Corporation S. A. built a new produc-
tion hall for a beverage line. The system in Cal-
lao was constructed in just a few weeks. Fifty-
three units of the MOVIGEAR® SNI mechatronic
drive system with six MOVIFIT® SNI decentral-
ized drive control units were installed on the
glass line in order to transport crates. The elec-
trical wiring and commissioning of the drives
was completed in less than a week. Accord-
ing to information from the OEM, around 60%
less cabling was required for the installation
compared to the classic solution with frequency
inverter control cabinets.
Within this project, SEW-EURODRIVE drives were
also used in the dry area: from depalletizing
empty crates to unpacking and repacking all the
way to palletizing the filled crates. Throughout
this process, filled crates with twelve one-liter
glass bottles are being transported. This sys-
tem was the first MOVIGEAR® project in South
America.

In order to increase efficiency, Kühne, the Ger-
man food producer, modernized its packaging
system in cooperation with the system designer
Goutherm. For this project, SEW-EURODRIVE
provided a complete motion control solution as
well as energy-efficient and dynamic drives with
a hygienic design: gearmotors, servomotors,
and servo inverters. Drive configuration with the
MOVIFIT® FDC field device controller significantly
simplified system startup.
One MOVIFIT® FDC drive controller designed
to function as a configurable control unit (CCU)
is used to control up to ten MOVIGEAR® drive
units, making the drive system extremely user-
friendly. At the same time, this solution sim-
plifies the startup of complex motion control
applications because it eliminates the program-
ming work that would be required for numerous
standard applications; only the CCU has to be
configured. In addition, the MOVIGEAR® unit
frequently saves up to 50% on energy when
compared with a standard gearmotor.
For layering and palletizing processes, the com-
plete solution from SEW-EURODRIVE with the
IEC 61131-compatible MOVI-PLC® motion and
logic controller facilitates the use of motion pro-
files optimized for time and jerking. This helps
to ensure maximum system performance and
careful handling of the product. An additional
benefit of this complete solution is on-the-fly
pick-up and placement, a method which reduces
the total cycle time needed to reposition the
glass containers. Because it is possible to set
the motion control parameters graphically in the
engineering phase of the project, on-site startup
time can be dramatically reduced.

Unpacking, Sorting, Packing:
Automation Solutions for Beer Production
Using automation technology from SEW-
EURODRIVE, the Lübz brewery was able to imple-
ment a fully automated sorting plant with a new
concept that is homogeneous on the control and
hardware end.
Portal robots guide mixed bottles into the plant
for depalletizing. Two CMP100 servomotors from
SEW-EURODRIVE are responsible for moving the
X and Y axes. The servomotors are controlled by a
MOVIAXIS® servo inverter. The robot is equipped
with a DOP11B mobile panel so it can be directly
controlled.
The sorting robot sorts bottles onto the six sorting
belts using two moving portals that work in par-
allel. Along with perfect sorting, the portal robot’s
dynamics and precision are what set it apart. Due
to the high degree of utilization of the plant area,
the processes were designed to be highly effi-
cient and require very little space. The two robot
manipulators are moved by two CMP100 servo-
motors – one for the vertical axis and one for
the horizontal axis. MOVI-PLC® with the “Sorter”
software module is also used to control the robot
as part of a comprehensive control concept. This
sorting robot is also equipped with a DOP panel
from SEW-EURODRIVE.
The packer places the bottles into the appropri-
ate cases. Both packing robots can be moved in
three directions; for this reason, three CMP100
servomotors are used for each robot. The units
are controlled using MOVIAXIS® with integrated
MOVI-PLC® with the “Packer” software module.
Thanks to the comprehensive concept, SEW-
EURODRIVE was able to greatly reduce the area
required for control cabinets, relieve the strain
on the higher-level system controllers, and use
the limited space in the plant in the most optimal
way.

The plant is running smoothly and the Lübz brewery is plan-
ning to equip additional plants with the new, fully automatic
sorting system.

Standard AC motors from the DR modular
system are available in all efficiency classes –
up to IE4. Save energy, reduce costs, increase
efficiency: SEW-EURODRIVE’s MOVIGEAR®
mechatronic drive systems and the DRC
electronic motor are two particularly energy-
efficient solutions in efficiency class IE4 for use
in all materials handling applications.
Energy savings of up to 50% can be achieved
and operating costs in bottling plants can be
sustainably reduced. Low noise emissions are
an additional advantage of mechatronic drive
systems.
The single line network installation (SNI) mini-
mizes the time and costs for installation and
commissioning for conversion and moderniza-
tion projects. Thanks to the mechatronic drive
units with integrated frequency inverters, the
amount of space required for control cabinets
can be reduced to a minimum.
The mechatronic drive units from SEW-
EURODRIVE are designed to fulfill all require-
ments for use in hygienically sensitive areas.
This includes food-safe gear lubrication as
well as a stainless steel shaft. MOVIGEAR® is
equipped with a special durable and FDA-com-
pliant HP200 surface with anti-adhesive prop-
erties as standard for use in wet areas such as
bottling plants in the beverage industry. This
means that the customer receives a hygienic
high level drive that will not experience paint
chipping at the housing joints.
As part of the renovation of the transport systems in the
bottling plant, mechatronic drive systems from SEW-
EURODRIVE are playing a large role in reducing the overall
energy consumption. The systematic development and the
high level of integration of the components also contribute
to the high degree of reliability.
