CHAPTER NAME CHANGE

The Chapter Advisory Board has voted to put a chapter name change before the membership. Central Illinois/Peoria to

Central Illinois is a small change but the board sees the new name as a better and more inclusive name. After all, our chapter includes

all of Central Illinois, not just the Peoria area as some might deduce from the present name.

Please take a moment to consider this option and fill out the proxy ballot. Better yet, plan to attend the annual meeting.

Member attendance is important to the progressive growth and function of our chapter. The CAB is working to make the annual

meeting an event you shouldn’t miss.

ANNUAL MEETING

At the annual meeting, November 10, our program “Organizing the Sewing Room” will be given by Charlotte Cronin. It will

also be the state Make It With Wool Contest. Our contest theme this year is Pattern Hacks. At the June luncheon, Deon Maas

presented a program to inspire you on Pattern Hacks. She gave us lots of examples to help get you started. Or, you may have come up

with some of your own.

Our interpertation of pattern hacks is to take favorite elements from one, two, or more patterns to make a new pattern design.

Or, it could be any type of pattern manipulation like adding darts, changing a collar, using a sleeve from one pattern to make sleeves

for another garment, manipulating the sleeves or making a hemline asymmetrical.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Some of us who sew never have

anything much to wear, at least not self-

made clothing. I am among the afore

mentioned some. My fabric collection is

more than adequate, a wardrobe plan is

pinned to my idea board, notions are

ready and even several fitted muslins are

finished. Recently, I even spent a

wonderful day learning computer skills to

further hone my design skills. What gives? I should have a

closet full of beautiful clothes.

Making time to sew is not the issue. This summer

may top my personal best for hours logged at the sewing

machine. I spent days that turned into weeks paper piecing a

purple elephant quilt for my niece. The hours spent sewing on

this project would have translated into an entire wardrobe

collection. But he (not sure why I refer to the elephant as he)

is magnificent. The project was way out of my piecing

comfort zone, so I definitely expanded my sewing skills.

Besides, I am sure to rocket into best aunt in the universe

status.

How could I not assist my granddaughter with her

doll quilt? She is new to sewing with her own sewing

machine and a doll in need of a quilt. So, we worked together

to finish a doll quilt that she loves. The time spent would have

yielded me that moto jacket that I have planned. But what a

joy it was to sew with her and to have my daughter-in-law sew

on a project as well. Three generations happily sewing away

at the same time in the same place. Utopia for me.

Then the number three mini quilt had to be finished

in time for a grandson’s third birthday. There goes the time

for that new tote bag. However, one is only three once. And,

just when I was about to begin working on my dress for an

upcoming wedding, my husband announced that he needed a

new phone holder for his belt. Because the one I made several

years ago was worn out.

Actually, nothing makes me happier than to sew for

my family. The projects I make for them always fit and/or

turn out just right. I can’t always say that for the projects I

attempt to sew for myself.

Have you ever attended a sewing retreat? I have and

I’m really looking forward to attending the retreat sponsored

by our chapter. Actually, I have my projects already packed

and they are mine….all mine!!

Keep sewing everyone, and don't forget to sew

something for yourself.

A special THANK YOU to all members who have renewed your ASG membership!

SEWING TIPS FROM SUE Fitting has always been a problem for most sewers. There are pros and cons to the tissue fitting method. However, I pin

front and back together and slip it on. Then, I pin front and back to my undies. I can tell if I need to lengthen the bottom, add to the

sides, raise or lower the darts or shorten them, etc. I also pin the sleeves together so I can tell if they are big enough around and

approximately the correct length.

From there, I make a muslin. For your fabric for your muslin use a piece of similar fabric type from your stash that you

wonder why you bought it. You can also use that pattern to lay on top of a garment that you like the fit. It always helps to have a

sewing buddy, but it can be done by yourself. A 3 way mirror helps as well.

When channel cutting, it helps to draw a line in chalk so your lines are straight.

MAKE 18 IN ’18! Central Illinois ASG members have surpassed the original goal of the "Make 18 in '18!" Anti-Ouch Pouch campaign! Over

1,000 mastectomy pillows are donated by our group each year. That is a lot of sewing if it falls on the shoulders of just a few people!

This year, many members stepped up to the plate, or rather, to the sewing machine. Members were offered bundles of 18 pre-

cut kits to take home and sew at their own pace. The goal was to have members make a third of the annual donation. To date, nearly

500 kits have been handed out and 350 pillows have been turned back in. The original goal was surpassed by May!

Members are encouraged to complete the pillows, or to turn in the un-sewn kits, by the end of 2018. Kits will be available at

most ASG events. Thanks to all who have contributed.

Instructions and an instructional video are available at: https://www.asg.org/resources/giving-back/ on the ASG website. Our

goal is for 20 members to participate. This will be 360 pillows toward the needed 1000.

A WORD FROM YOUR COMMUNITY LIAISON Happy Fall Everyone!

This year’s annual sewing retreat was held at the Chiara Center in Springfield August 27-29. A total

of nine very creative and talented women enjoyed 3 days of uninterrupted sewing and gabbing. With sewing

machines and sergers humming we made blankets, bags, clothing and many other items.

The retreat offers everyone attending help when they’re stuck on a project, help fitting or just

gathering ideas for future projects. Our time was not completely spent on sewing. We also played sewing

bingo and other games for awesome prizes! Hope to see even more creative women at next year’s retreat.

Our next charity sewing day is Friday, September 7, at the North Branch Library from 10am to 3pm.

We will be working on bibs for the Crittenton center. Bring your sewing machine and basic sewing notions

and help us fill a need for this local organization.

Kim Caywood, Community Liaison

MEET MEMBER BERNIECE MCGLASSON

I asked my mom how to make those stitches with needle and thread when I was 5. When I was 7 my

cousin made me some doll clothes which inspired me to make doll clothes. I started making doll clothes with

hand stitches when I was about 8.

In 7th

grade, I took a sewing class. I made a striped dress that I wore all the time. It had a square

neck with a facing, puffed sleeves. In school, I sewed on an electric sewing machine. At home, I sewed on a

treadle machine. Then I started to sew any time I had the opportunity.

My mom was a good seamstress who sewed because she needed to sew for her family. My aunts,

grandmothers and others I knew also sewed a lot. I watched them when I went to visit them.

I didn’t take any more sewing classes in high school. I made a number of skirts which I wore to

school.

When I started to work, I bought a new Necchi with a zig zag stitch. I made coats and a cape, tops, shorts, costumes for the

plays in high school and dresses for my children.

In the early nineties, I joined ASG. I served on the board as vice president for 3 years. I attended national sewing seminars

and took a number of sewing classes. I attended my first ASG convention in Nashville. I also attended ASG conventions in Chicago,

Indianapolis and St Louis. I also took a Stretch & Sew class.

I taught her daughters to sew. I gave my daughter Vicki a machine for 8th

grade graduation.

I enjoy sewing and I am always working on a sewing project.

NEIGHBORHOOD GROUP CHAIRMAN Halloween Costume Workshop

October 6, 2018

9:00am to 4:00pm

United Presbyterian Church

We are excited to announce a collaborative effort between United Presbyterian Church, our Central Illinois

Chapter of the American Sewing Guild and Bradley University’s Drama Costume and Fashion Departments.

Our goals are to share our love of sewing with young sewists and attract new members to the American

Sewing Guild.

Participants must bring a sewing machine in good working order. They must also be able to thread the

machine and sew in forward and reverse.

For beginners, there will be three suggested costume starting points: an easy Dracula/Super Hero cape, an

advanced beginner sleeper pattern and a simple cap pattern with seams for ears/horns/antennas, etc.

We are looking for three volunteers who might be willing to do hands-on demonstrations and/or answer

questions and provide support.

Participants will be charged a small amount to reserve a table, pay for some supplies and snacks. We are considering offering

pre-cut sleeper kits at an additional charge.

We are excited for this opportunity to reach out to the community AND have some fun.

Can you join us? Do you have questions? Please contact Charlotte Cronin at [email protected] .

Charlotte Cronin, Neighborhood Group Coordinator

NANCY’S NOTIONS: 10% off entire order. Use source code 189411-5224. Not valid at special events, on the

purchase of gift certificates or for class registration. Limit one source code per order. This discount cannot be combined with any other

KIM CAYWOOD SHARES HER MOM’S WEDDING DRESS

May 12, 1951...that's the day my mom and dad got married. My mom didn't wear the conventional white wedding dress. Her

dress was made from satin taffeta with a pink background and the design in black. Even though the dress is over 60 years old, it's still

in remarkable shape with little staining and yellowing but no rotting. She told me when they got married her waist was 22 inches!!! I

have never been able to fit into it!

The pictures show the hem with which they used hem tape and hand stitching and they pinked the seams. Another picture

shows the collar where they used a stiff woven interfacing. All the buttons are there and the upturned sleeve has a point detail. As you

can see by the original wedding picture she wore a hat and the dress had a belt. They disappeared long ago and all that's left is the

dress.

I've decided it's time to share the dress with all my mom's granddaughters. I'm going to make a cosmetic bag for each one

using the dress fabric and some vinyl.

ANTI-OUCH POUCH Anti-Ouch Pouches (AOPs) were designed by chapter member Deon Maas. This underarm hanging pillow is

intended to add a little comfort to people’s lives during a stressful, painful time. The pillow hangs from the shoulder,

fitting snugly under the arm to cushion and ease the pressure of the underarm and breast area after breast surgery, upper

body surgeries or during radiation treatment.

Tens of thousands of anti-ouch pouches have been lovingly sewn and donated to breast centers across the United

States. The American Sewing Guild featured the Anti-Ouch Pouch as the 2008 National Community Service Project.

Read more at https://www.asg.org/resources/giving-back.

This will continue to be an ongoing project for our chapter. We take them to the OSF Susan G Komen Center and Methodist

Diagnostic Center in Peoria. Digital mammography detects so many more cases of breast cancer thus increasing the need for AOP’s.

We would appreciate help making AOPs. If you have questions, contact Deon Maas at [email protected] or Sue Barnabee,

[email protected]. Follow this link www.asg.org/files/community_service/Anti_Ouch_Pouch.pdf for the pattern.

Please consider donating soft fabric, stuffing or completed AOPs. We donate hundreds every few months in our area at OSF

Komen Center and Methodist Diagnostic Center.

ANGEL GOWNS OF CENTRAL ILLINOIS Loss of an infant leaves a sorrowful emptiness in the arms and hearts of their families who never

were able to bring the child home from the hospital. It can be an isolating time, especially as parents try to

find clothing in which to bury their tiny babies.

The Chillicothe Christian Church is coordinating the project to make Angel Dresses from

wedding and formal gowns. The Angel Dresses are for babies who never recover in the neonatal

intensive care unit at Children’s Hospital of Illinois at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

The gowns are made for baby boys and girls to serve as baptismal/end of life gowns. Navy, gray

and black are used for pant sets for the boys. The gowns are made to fit the small premature babies. One

wedding dress can make up to 10-12 Angel Gowns. Each little outfit comes packed in a special, pretty keepsake box. In the box,

along with the gown, is a handmade blanket and hat and booties.

Over 100 wedding dresses have been donated since the project began. There is a need for pink, blue or black gowns. They

currently have a supply of wedding dresses. They also need ribbons, lace, buttons, thread and other notions, cash donations or

JOANN Fabric gift cards to purchase sewing supplies. Dresses do not need to be cleaned before you send them. Unless your gown has

been trashed, sewers have had lots of luck spot cleaning and working around damage.

ASG members can contact Sue Barnabee, [email protected] (309) 647-0111 or www.facebook.com/gowns4angels to make

donations or for more information. The Fall Gown event will be Tuesday, October 9th

and Wednesday, October 10th

from 10:00am to

3:00pm at our new office, Mary’s Place, located at 3029 N. Prospect Road, Peoria.

CRITTENTON CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER

Crittenton Development Center serves Central Illinois children and families by providing loving

child care and a 24-hour staffed crisis nursery.

The center is in constant need of bibs. You can donate them directly, contact a CAB member for pick up or bring them to a

chapter/neighborhood meeting. The pattern is on the web site. www.peoriaasg.org/CommunityServiceCrittenton.html

Our chapter donates custom-made bibs, crib and cot sheets, burp pads and wash cloths to help defray the costs of purchasing

them. Those patterns are on the web site link above. Crittenton has said the items our chapter provides are "much higher quality" than

those they can purchase. Please consider helping. Supplies to make the items will be provided for you.

We are also collecting coupons for baby items. Since these are time limited, gather your coupons periodically and mail them

to Crittenton Development Center, 442 W John H Gwynn Jr Ave, Peoria, IL 61605.

Our support at Crittenton Child Development Center is done by donating items that they need. This is a project we will be

continuing. Contact Kim Caywood for information at [email protected].
