GOOD NEI^ISLevhicus r9:r.-2, r7-r8 I r Cqrinthian: 3:e6-23 I Matthew 538-+n8

"But I sayto you, love your enemies."

l've never met a person who found this command easy to follow. Somepeople practice every day and are better at k than others; l've been

fortunate to know one ortwo of them.

Most of us are good at loving inthe abstract. As an lrish Catholic, llovethe people who continr.re the troubles in lreland. As an Arnerican, I love thosewho have attacked our country and those who embrace a different politicalview.

It's pretty easy to love people you don't know. Where I fall down is in theconcrete, day-to-day loving. I find it really hard to love the people who dontlove or even like me. I find it even harder to love those who have hurt me ormembers of my family. The difficulty of Jesus' words strike home when theybecome personal. We come face to face with our own unloving ways and

unloving hearts.

This is precisely where the grace of baptism comes into play. lt's natural tofeel hur.t and anger when someone wounds us deeply. lt's human to want toreturn hurt for hult with words, behaviors, or even fists.

Jesus invites us into a different path--one from which we can love others intheir woundedness and receive the love and healing of God for our ownwounds. Jesus knows that only the path of love leeds to life. Any other path

will lead to our even-tual destruction.

LwING IN LOVE F{ETREAT March t5-15, 2014

Often we say that we want to live our lives as Jesus would want us to.Sometimes we hear about Pope John Paul ll's Theology of the Body and

wonder how to incorporate his divine plan for couples into our everyday lives.

Some days we feel like we want to love our sPouse and make him or her feel

loved and special. But it can be such a mystery to know and be able toacturally make this real for us with our busy lives^

A Living in Love Weekend will be presented by the best-selling authors ofPassionate Parent Passionate Couple, Ed and Betty Coda, please join us at 5t.

Stephen Church on March t5-t6. After they experienced this mini-retreat,they learned ways to solve this mystery for their own marriaEe and now theywant to share this good news with others, (Pease take lzome aflier.)

Please join them. See the website www.livinginlove.org for moreinformation and to register or call 839-o837.

de ar PAD Rf,

When ?m trying to pray, I mn't sop thinking dbout my to-ila list.

How can I sh* tlnr- things aut anilfx*s on rdy prayos?

Most spiritnal directors encourage a person to entergentty into solitude and prryer. Real conversation with arry

fiend begins with warm acknowledgment of that friend'spresence, so as you sit or }rreel, aclrrowledge that you are

in a sacred place and that God is presenlSeveral techniques cen help us find interior silence and

solitude- Many people find it helps to sit in a comfortableposition and pay close attention to their breathing. T"kitgslow, deep breaths relaxes our minds and heare. Vhenrepeated, a sacred word likeJe*rs or ,*ba mn fircus ourattention and help us let go of the distractions that can so

easily cnowd our corrsciou$less-

.&nother technique is to tal<e a feuz moments to {indquie! then read a passage from Scripture. Many people

choose the Gospel pas$ge ofthe dqn others read a Gospelthrouglr from beginnitg to end by reading a short passage

each day.True cromrersation goes both way* One way Gcd

speaks to rrs is through the Word Reading Scripture as

part of our conversation with God is a good way to be sure

we don't do all the talking-Fr- Michael Brchl, CSsR ordry&* lldk@lfuHorlorg
