If things created are so full of loveliness, how resplendent must be
the One who made them! The wisdom of the Worker is apparent in
such handiwork. —St. Anthony of Padua
KEEP PRAYING St. Monica, whose feast we celebrate in August, is often known as “the persistent mother.” She watched her oldest son, Augustine, turn his back on his Christian faith. Monica was exasperated. For years she gave up talking directly to her son on the advice of a local bishop, who told her that it was better to talk to God about Augustine then to Augustine about God. The mother never gave up praying for her son. Eventually Augustine gave up his wild ways, was baptized, and later ordained and named bishop of Hippo. St. Augustine went on to become one of the Church’s greatest scholars. Today’s readings address the importance of persistent prayer. Abraham, in spite of trepidation that he is bothering the Lord, continues to ask about the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah. Jesus, in Luke’s Gospel, tells his disciples to “ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” (Luke 11:9). This is our charge: keep praying. Christ has forgiven our transgressions, obliterated the
bond against us, nailing it to the tree.

Who can use NFP? Any married couple can use NFP! A woman need not have “regular cycles”. NFP education helps couples to fully understand their combined fertility, thereby helping them to either achieve or avoid a pregnancy. The key to the successful use of NFP is cooperation and communication between husband and wife—a shared commitment. NFP is unique among methods of family planning because it enables its users to work with the body rather than against it. Fertility is viewed as reality to life, not a problem to be solved. (What is NFP? NFP Program, U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, see: http://usccb.org/nfp/natural-family-planning/what-is-nfp) or for local information go to: http://archla.org/marriageprep
We wanted to wish Bernadette Hamel Graves a Happy 101st Birthday!!!
Bernadette was born in Alberta, Canada, on July 7, where she lived on a 900-acre wheat farm until the death of her father brought her and her family to Long Beach when she was 15. She started the Rosary Prayer Group where her, along with a few other families on Cerritos Avenue would go and visit other families in the neighborhood. We would like to wish her many more blessings to come!

Him in adoration and in contemplation that is full of faith… May our adoration never cease.”

Saint of the Day
Healing Mass
Our Catholic tradition has always identified the parents of Mary, the Mother of God, as Joachim and Ann. This long-standing practice has its origin in the oral tradition of early Christianity which was later recorded in non-Scriptural texts such as the Gospel of James. There one finds some of the faith tradition of our earliest Christian ancestors which held that after years of childlessness, an angel appeared to Anne and Joachim to inform them that they would have a child. Anne promised to dedicate this child to God (much the way that Samuel was dedicated to God by his mother Hannah in 1 Kings). We honor Joachim and Ann as the parents of Mary who nurtured her, taught her, and raised her to know, love and trust God -- so much so that she was properly disposed in mind and heart to be able to respond to what God asked of her through the Angel Gabriel: "'Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son and you shall call him Jesus...The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.' Mary said, 'Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.'" (Luke 1:26-38) It was the example of parenting that Mary must have received from Joachim and Ann that she followed as she raised Jesus. It was the faith they shared with her which laid the foundation of courage, strength, and trust which served her well even in the pain of standing at the foot of the cross as her Son was crucified. As such, Joachim and Ann can be examples and models of inspiration for all parents and grandparents. Paragraph Source: Catholic Online—www.catholic. org
