Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost September 27, 2020

Serving us in worship today:

David Mayer, Sermon; Georgie Dittrich, Lay Reader, 8:30; Kim Kauitzsch, 9:30;

Kerry Koehler, Andrew Koenig, Ushers 8:30;

Matt Sherwood, John Kuempel, Ushers 9:30.

Andrew Cave, Children’s Church; Annette Stout, LeAnne White Music

The sign of the cross may be made in remembrance of your Baptism.

In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

A: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from

whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the

inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily

magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

A: If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the

truth. But if we confess our sins to him, He is faithful and just to forgive us our

sins and cleanse us from all wickedness. (1 John 1: 8-9, NLT)

Silence for reflection and self-examination.

A: Most Merciful God,

We confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We

have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done

and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole

heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your

Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so

that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your

holy name. Amen.

A: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to dies for us, and for his sake God forgives us all of our sins. To those who believe in Jesus Christ he gives the power to become the children of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

“This is the Day”

1st Time – Leader 2nd Time – Congregation

♫ This is the day, this is the day that the Lord has made, that the Lord has

made;

We will rejoice, we will rejoice and be glad in it, and be glad in it.

This is the day that the Lord has made;

We will rejoice and be glad in it.

This is the day, this is the day that the Lord had made. ♫

Please be seated.

But I will save them from all the backslidings in which they have sinned, and will

cleanse them; and they shall be my people, and I will be their God. 24 “My servant David shall be king over them, and they shall all have one

shepherd. They shall walk in my rules and be careful to obey my statutes.25 They

shall dwell in the land that I gave to my servant Jacob, where your fathers lived.

They and their children and their children's children shall dwell there forever, and

David my servant shall be their prince forever. 26 I will make a covenant of peace

with them. It shall be an everlasting covenant with them. And I will set them in

their land and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in their midst forevermore. 27 My dwelling place shall be with them, and I will be their God, and they shall be

my people. 28 Then the nations will know that I am the Lord who sanctifies Israel,

when my sanctuary is in their midst forevermore.”

A: Here ends the reading.

So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any

participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, 2 complete my joy by being

of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. 3

Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more

significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests,

but also to the interests of others. 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is

yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count

equality with God a thing to be grasped,7 but emptied himself, by taking the form

of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form,

he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on

a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name

that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,

in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that

Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

A: Here ends the reading.

Matthew 12:38-42

38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, “Teacher, we

wish to see a sign from you.” 39 But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous

generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the

prophet Jonah. 40 For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of

the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart

of the earth. 41 The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this

generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and

behold, something greater than Jonah is here.42 The queen of the South will rise

up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the

ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater

than Solomon is here.

A: The gospel of the Lord.

“Be Thou My Vision” WOV 776

1) Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;

naught be all else to me, save that thou art:

thou my best thought by day and by night,

waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.

3) Riches I heed not, nor vain, empty praise,

thou mine inheritance, now and always:

thou, and thou only, first in my heart,

great God of heaven, my treasure thou art.

4) Light of my soul, after victory won,

may I reach heaven’s joys, O heaven’s Sun!

Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,

still be my vision, O Ruler of all.

Create In Me A Clean Heart Pg. 96 LBW Please stand as you are able.

♫ Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.

Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me.

Restore to me the joy of your salvation, And uphold me with your free Spirit. ♫

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in

Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died,

and was buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the

dead; He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father

Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I

believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints;

the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.

Amen.
