Let's try to match the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World, let's match the picture of the Wonder to their name! We are going to use the pens to draw a line from the name to the picture.

Let's learn some more about the Seven Wonders, shall we?
Nov 39:45 AM
The Hanging Gardens of Babylon
• Only one with no definitive location, no real record of it exists.• Built by great NeoBabylonian King Nebuchadnezzar II for his wife, who
missed the greenness of her homeland, Media.• Accompanied a palace so grand it was called "The Marvel of Mankind."• Sennacherib, an Assyrian king, DID build his own Hanging Gardens and
palace to honor his wife. We have excavated parts of this palace in Ninevah, but the area is now a military base, so further excavations are unlikely at this point in time.
• Why are the Hanging Gardens of Babylon one of the Wonders but not the one at Ninevah?

The Pyramids of Giza (Khufu)
• Built between 2560–2540 B.C.E., this pyramid served as the tomb of the Egyptian Pharaoh Khufu, of the Fourth Dynasty.
• Tallest manmade structure in the world (481 feet) for 3,800 years.• What we see today is not the actual outer "skin" of the pyramid, but
rather the underlayer.• We will learn more about this during our Egypt unit, which is next!
Nov 310:22 AM
Statue of Zeus at Olympia• Fortytwo foot statue made in 435 B.C.E. by
the sculptor Phidias.• The Temple of Zeus was built first (between
472456 B.C.E.), and then the statue was built inside the temple.
• The sculpture is made of ivory plates and gold panels over a wooden framework.
• It represented the god Zeus sitting on an elaborate cedarwood throne ornamented with ebony, ivory, gold and precious stones.
• Descriptions of the statue come from Greek records and the images on coins.
• The Temple burned down in 425 B.C.E., but as for when the statue was destroyed, accounts vary.
Nov 310:30 AM
The Temple of Artemis at Ephasus• Greek Temple built in
Ephesus (near presentday Selçuk, Turkey).
• No one knows actual first date it was built, but it was destroyed and rebuilt three times before being destroyed for good in 401 C.E.
• There is a classical myth that on the night of the birth of Alexander the Great, the Temple of Artemis was destroyed for the 2nd time. Supposedly, the goddess Artemis was so preoccupied with Alexander's birth that she did not notice her temple being destroyed by an arsonist named Herostratus in 356 B.C.E.
• Redisvocered in 1869 C.E.

Colossus at Rhodes• A ninetyeight foot tall statue of the
Greek titangod of the sun, Helios.• Built by Chares of Lindos in 280
B.C.E.• It was destroyed in an earthquake in
226 B.C.E.• It was a war memorial to celebrate
Rhodes's victory over Cyprus.• Took 12 years to build, due to
incredibly complex building methods (but not complex enough to be earthquakeproof).
• This image is a recreation based off of medieval imaginations: the actual statue could not have straddled the harbor like it appears here, otherwise it would have blocked off the entire harbor when it collapsed, but it did not.

Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
Modern 3D rendering of the Mausoleum
• Tomb that was built between 353350 B.C.E. for Mausolus and his wife, Artemisia II of Caria. Mausolus was a satrap, or a Persian Governor.
• Approximately 150 feet tall, the outside had relief statues carved by 4 different artists and, when finished, was immediately named a Wonder of the World.
• We now call aboveground tombs mausoleums, after Mausolus's structure.
• This tomb was destroyed by two earthquakes in the 12th and 15th centuries.
Nov 311:19 AM
The Lighthouse at Alexandria
• Built on the island of Pharos, across the isthmus from the city of Alexandria in Egypt, this lighthouse stood approximately 450 feet tall.
• Took 12 years to complete by Ptolemy I and II, and cost 800 talents (gold worth $969,680,884)
• A series of earthquakes over several hundred years eventually destroyed all of the lighthouse, which served as a model for all other lighthouses for centuries.

The only Ancient Wonder still standing today.
Some experts say that this Ancient Wonder never really existed.
The Greeks built this shrine in honor of their gods during the Olympics.
At the time, this structure was the tallest one on Earth, standing at 400 feet tall!
A tomb to hold the Persian King and his wife.
This Ancient Wonder took 12 years to build.
