COLLABORATIONForm a Collaborative Team
Promote a Spirit of Inquiry Pausing
• Pause before responding or asking a question. • Allow time for thinking.
• Enhance dialogue,discussion,
and decision-making.
Paraphrase
• Use a paraphrase starter that is comfortable for you.
• “So …”, or “As you were…”, or “ You’re thinking…”,
or “Appreciating what you are saying, if I understand you
correctly,…”
• Follow the starter with a paraphrase, to assist members, of
the group, to hear and understand each other, as they
formulate decisions.
Probe for Specificity• Use gentle open-ended probes or inquiry such as.
• “Please say more” or “I’m curious about…”
• “I’d like to hear more about …” or “Then, are you
– saying…”
• Increase the clarity and precision of the group’s thinking.
Putting Ideas on the Table
• Ideas are the heart of a meaningful dialogue.
• Label the intention of your comments.
• For example, you might say, “Here is one idea..”or “one
thought I have is..”or “ Here is a possible approach..”
Presuming Positive Inventions
• Assuming that the others’ intentions are positive
promotes and facilitates.• Meaningful dialogue and eliminates unintentional put-
downs
• Use positive intentions in your speech as one
manifestation of this norm
Pursing a Balance BetweenAdvocacy and Inquiry
• Pursue and Maintain a balance.
• Advocate a position• Inquire about one’s
own and other’s position.
• Assist the group to become a learning
organization.
