Feast of the Assumption of Mary into Heaven – August 15, 2010

Last Good Friday, over 90 teenagers at St. Ignatius Parish in Cincinnati, Ohio, re-enacted 12 key scenes from the life of Jesus. Their script began with the an-nunciation and included Jesus‘ baptism, temptation in the desert, teaching his followers before the Last Supper and

another seven scenes, ending with the burial of Je-sus… a spotlight shone on Mary as she tied the scenes together … always ended with a question …, ―Have you seen my son?‖ (taken from St. Anthony Messenger Press) As we celebrate the Assumption, we might forget Mary‘s passion and tragedy. In the Gospel of Luke, Elizabeth calls Mary ‗blessed‘. In its truest meaning, blessed means that one experiences the greatness and burden of God‘s love at the same time. While Mary knew the grace of bearing and raising the Son of God – she also knew the passion of asking, ―have you seen my son?‖ You, too, are called to be blessed. Celebrate the mo-ments of God‘s grace in your lives and remember that moments of struggle will ultimately lead to moments of victory. Let Mary be our example and guide this day!

-Fr. Joseph S. Popelka
