Setting, Plot, Character

Setting-the time, place, physical details, and circumstances in which a situation occurs. Settings include the background, atmosphere or environment in which characters live and move, and usually include physical characteristics of the surroundings.

Plot- The structure and relationship of actions and events in a work of fiction.

Character-a person who is responsible for the thoughts and actions within a story, poem, or other literature.

Conflict, Point of View, Theme

Conflict-The opposition between two characters, between two large groups of people, or between the protagonist and a larger problem such as forces of nature, ideas, public mores, and so on. Conflict may also be completely internal.

Point of View-The way a story gets told and who tells it. It is the method of narration that determines the position, or angle of vision, from which the story unfolds.

Theme- a common thread or repeated idea that is incorporated throughout a literary work. A theme is a thought or idea the author presents to the reader that may be deep, difficult to understand, or even moralistic.

Protagonist, Antagonist

Protagonist-A protagonist is considered to be the main character or lead figure in a novel, play, story, or poem.

Antagonist- a character in a story or poem who deceives, frustrates, or works against the main character, or protagonist, in some way

Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, Resolution

Exposition: background information a reader must understand in order to know what is going on in the story

Rising Action: events and conflicts that occur when the main character tackles the problem; level of excitement and suspense builds

Climax: the main character comes face to face with the problem; most exciting part of the story

Falling Action: things begin to get back to normal; life goes on (even if the problem isn't solved)

Denoument (Resolve): loose ends are tied off; allows reader to clearly understand what happened

Narrator, genre

narrator- one who tells a story, the speaker or the “voice” of an oral or written work

Genre- A type or category of literature or film marked by certain shared features or conventions.
