Meditation: “Come to me, all you who labor, and I will give you rest”

My brothers and sisters, the gospel this Sunday shows three calls of Jesus that we have to pay close attention to. They have the power to transform the atmosphere of tiredness, boredom, and despair that may have taken hold of our life. These are welcome words as we navigate this new reality of a pandemic. “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest” is the first call and is aimed at the people that live their faith as if it was a heavy burden. Their conscience weighs them down because of their past sins and they can’t find the joy that comes from the Lord until they recognize the need for God’s forgiveness, which they can receive through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We leave our burden when we go to Confession and receive forgiveness and spiritual rest in exchange.

“Take my yoke upon you, for my yoke is easy and my burden light” is the second call. Jesus does not promise there will be no burdens in life; there will be some, but they will be lighter with Him. That is to say, life with Jesus will be easier because His light and wisdom help us discern between right and wrong. If we choose what’s right, we get rest. There is more freedom in life because Jesus sets the best in us free and his proposal is for a more “human” life, more dignified, healthier life. He frees us from fears and tensions, and He helps us grow in trust in God, in neighbor, and in ourselves. God’s grace helps us realize our passions in life.

“Learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart, and you will find rest for yourselves” is the third call. We need to learn to live like Jesus lived. He doesn’t complicate things. He makes life clearer and simpler, humbler and healthier. Living that way is the rest He offers us. He is not proposing something He hasn’t practiced Himself. This is why he understands our difficulties and forgives our clumsiness and mistakes, encouraging us always to rise up from our falls.

This all sounds easy. However, we find it hard to believe that living with Jesus might make a difference in our life. I’ve heard people say they feel a spiritual coldness, disconnected from God due to the current situation in the world. Jesus is inviting you and I to spend some time in silence and hear His voice telling us “Come to me…” come and rest from all your burdens, I will give you rest. I am the rest you need. Amen.

Fr. Jose Ugalde, MSpS

A WAITING HARVEST Vocation Awareness

Signs of a Vocation to Priesthood

and Characteristics of a Good Candidate

O Jesus, Our Eternal Pastor, Deign to look with merciful eyes Upon this part of your loving flock. Lord, we need a large number of priests, and men and women consecrated to the religious life. Multiply vocations, And sanctify more and more

your priests, And those consecrated in the religious life. We ask you all this through the Immaculate Virgin Mary of Guadalupe, your sweet and holy Mother. Jesus give us priests according to your heart.

Jesus, savior of all people, save them, save them!

16. Events in the life of a good candidate will sometimes point towards priesthood. Part I

Perhaps you have heard the expression, “Sometimes in the winds of change, we find our true direction.”

I remember meeting a priest who told me that he was drafted into the army in early 1970s and sent to Vietnam. He was not even practicing his faith, though he went to Confession and started praying once he got there. He recalled the day he was in a foxhole with two of his best friends and a mortar exploded near them. He was in the middle of his two friends. They were both killed, yet he survived with minimal injuries. Later, he asked the Lord, “Why? Why did they both die that day, yet here I am still alive? What do you want from me?” This was the first time he had ever asked God that question and he eventually got an answer. He ended up in the seminary and he is a priest today.

As part of the seminary admissions committee, I have the privilege of reading the autobiographies of many new seminarians every year, and I am always amazed at the ways God has orchestrated the events of heir lives. Some of these events of their involved the death of a loved one, the birth of a handicapped brother or sister, inexplicable loss of a job at a critical moment, the painful divorce of

their parents, or retreats, pilgrimages, or mission trips.

One of the more unusual stories I have heard involved a young man who had considered priesthood but decided instead to pursue his dream of becoming a game warden. Yet he had told the Lord, as he wrestled back and forth between becoming a priest or accepting a job, “Lord, you know I have always wanted to be a game warden and all the doors have opened for me. If you do not want this, and you want me to become a priest, then send me a clear sign.” He must take a lie detector test as part of the application because it was a law enforcement position. He had been told that the polygraph was just procedural; they basically had already admitted him into the program. It turned out that he failed the lie detector test! He told me, “Father, I didn’t lie about a thing!” he was absolutely shocked when he failed, and so were the other game wardens, failing meant waiting a year, reapplying , and taking the lie detector test again. But the man said. “No thanks. I am applying to seminary.

As we all know, the “social distancing” practices and suspension of gathering for Mass have created unique challenges to the way we practice our faith.

Nothing is more important than all of us taking the necessary steps to protect and ensure the health and well-being of our families, friends, neighbors, as well as our parish.

Although we are physically separated from the Eucharist---our church is alive and still on mission.

This year our parish share of the Appeal is $151,672. If we exceed this goal, all excess payments received will come back to us and we will put that towards recovery of lost offertory donations.

In addition, this year 10% of all the funds collected through the ACA (excluding our rebate) will be placed into a special Parish Solidarity Fund at the Archdiocese.

In this way, your donations will help us, but will also help other parishes recover.

The reality is that many of your fellow parishioners may not be able to participate this year, so your support is more important than ever.

Be assured of my gratitude for your gift –whatever the amount— and of my continuing prayers for you and your loved ones!

Fr. Jose Ugalde MSpS

The 2020 Annual Catholic Appeal is underway, and we are

seeking everyone’s participation this year so that we reach

our goal of $151,672.

All contributions received in excess of this Archdiocesan

goal will come directly back to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton as a

rebate.

Our 2020 ACA rebate goal will be used for lost offertory

donations.

If you gave to the Appeal last year, I ask you to consider

increasing your gift by 5% this year. If you are not sure

what to give, would you consider a gift of $365 ($1 per

day) ?
