Grand Knight Report

Charles I. Briscoe

301-262-7936; 240-701-8093

[email protected] Greetings my brother Knights. I Congratulate all the new officers of Mother Seton Council #5381 who were installed for the new fraternal year. I also would like to express my sincere appreciation to all who worked tirelessly to make the 57th Installation of Officers Program a smooth and memorable experience. Moreover, on behalf of our Council, my heartfelt thanks is extended to the immediate past Grand Knight (IPGK),Ferdinand Ibebuchi and the immediate past officers for their hard work and leadership in helping our council provide charitable assistance to those in need within our community, church and families during the 2018-2019 fraternal year. My sincere thanks to the new officers and Program Directors who attended the New Officers Training Seminar offered by the Knights of Columbus State Program Team on July 24th at Sacred Heart Council No. 2577 in Bowie, Maryland. On behalf of all our Mother Seton Council brother knights, I extend a hardy welcome to our newest 1st Degree Knights, Anthony S. Foli, Philip N. Akwataibe, C. Obieze Eze and, Anthony A.Smith. For those who are unaware, our priests, Rev. Fr. Jack Kennealy and Fr. Canice Enyiaka, were gracious enough to take time from their busy schedules to join our Knights to work “full shifts” at concession stands at FedEx Field for the Real Madrid vs Arsenal FC Soccer game onTuesday, July 23rd . It was truly an honor to have them work with us and, for that we extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation. Also, my sincere appreciation is extended to the wonderful parents of our parish and academy youth who volunteered to assist in operating concession stands during recent events at FedEx Field. Looking ahead, we will need Council volunteers to assist with preparation for the Multicultural Festival scheduled to be held in Friendship Hall on October 19, 2019 (12noon – 4:00PM) and, for this season’s Redskin games at FedEx Field, the preseason schedule begins on August 15, 2019. The Deputy Grand Knight (DGK), E. Thad Ereme and I, will be meeting with the Program Directors next week to solidify timelines to ensure that our Council’s Faith, Community, Family and Life program requirements are achieved for the fraternal year. Information on other Council requirements and events will be forthcoming in future reports. In closing, I would like to thank everyone for the positive efforts put forth, thus far, to move our council forward; and again, to express how honored I am to be serving as your Grand Knight for the 2019-2020 fraternal year. I look forward to us working together as a family to serve God our Father and his children in need of our help. Vivat Jesus

(Chaplain’s Corner …….Continued from page 1)

Your personal response to God’s communication of himself and his will is called faith. “By faith man freely

commits his entire self to God, making ‘the full submission of his intellect and will of God who reveals,’ and

willingly assenting to the Revelation given by him”.

The basic doctrines or dogmas, of the Church are the verbal expression of what God has revealed to us about our

relationship with him. The key characteristic of the Church’s dogmas is that they agree with sacred Scripture. The

teachings spell out the unchangeable content of revelation, translating it into the changeable thought-forms and

languages of people in every new era and culture. A dogma is a statement of truth, a formulation of some aspect of

the Faith. The purpose of each dogma is to bring Jesus Christ to our attention from a particular point view. As a

coherent set of teachings, Church dogma is a faithful interpretation of God’s self-communication to humankind.

The basic and highest Catholic doctrines are: The Trinity (one God – Three Divine Persons); the incarnation (God

takes on flesh and dwells among us); the divinity of Christ (Jesus – both God and man). These are central points of

the Gospel message. Other doctrines such as Mary in God’s plan of salvation, the intercessory role of the saints and

purgatory are Catholic doctrines that are not central points of the Gospel message.

The Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network invites all to join in the Holy

Father’s August 2019 prayer intention:

"Families, through their life of prayer and love, become ever

more clearly schools of true human development."

Daily Offering Prayer

God, our Father, I offer You my day. I offer You my prayers, thoughts, words, actions,

joys, and sufferings in union with the Heart of Jesus, who continues to offer Himself in the

Eucharist for the salvation of the world. May the Holy Spirit, Who guided Jesus, be my

guide and my strength today so that I may witness to your love. With Mary, the mother of

our Lord and the Church, I pray for all Apostles of Prayer and for the prayer intentions

proposed by the Holy Father this month. Amen.

Father of goodness and love; hear our prayers for the sick members of our community and for all who are in need. Amid mental and physical suffering, may they find consolation in your healing presence. Show your mercy as you close wounds, cure illness, make broken bodies whole and free downcast spirits. May these special people find lasting health and deliverance, and so join us in thanking you for all your gifts. We ask this through the Lord Jesus who healed those who believed. Amen.

Supreme Council News KNIGHTS DONATE $185.7 MILLION TO CHARITY IN 2018

DONATIONS AND SERVICE HELP BETTER THE WORLD WHILE

BUILDING BRIDGE BACK TO FAITH

The K of C has announced that it gave $185.7 million to charity and donated 76.7 million hours of hands-on service in 2018. Contained in the annual fraternal survey, it demonstrates once again that charity is the first principle of the Knights of Columbus.

“Regardless of how or who the Knights serve, it’s the chance to help those who are unable to help themselves and to be of assistance to the sick or disabled that is at the heart of what being a Knight is all about,” said Knights of Columbus Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson.

The Knights’ charitable giving comes from three sources: direct fund raising, the funds raised by thousands of local Knights councils in their communities and from the Knights’ insurance operations.

How the Knights Do It: Fundraisers, a 501(c)(3), Community Service, and Insurance

K of C Councils: The Knights’ charitable activity is carried out by more than 16,000 councils in nine countries, which raise funds for a variety of causes, including efforts to protect and provide relief to persecuted Christians, pro-life initiatives and disaster aid and recovery. Council members also donate volunteer time to helping their parishes, communities, and organizations such as Special Olympics and Habitat for Humanity, as

well as Knights-specific efforts such as “Coats for Kids,” “Food for Families,” and scholarship programs.

Knights of Columbus councils raise money through a broad spectrum of activities that include pancake breakfasts, raffles, auctions, tank pulls, rodeos, and its well-known Tootsie Roll drives. Others who benefit from these efforts include local pregnancy support centers, seminarians and veterans and service members seeking healing on the Knights’ annual pilgrimage to Lourdes with the U.S. Military Archdiocese.

Anderson said, “The men who choose to become Knights of Columbus are generous, and their impact is immense. While we are known mainly for our local efforts, our reach is global.”

He added, “At the same time, the Knights help men improve their own lives by offering opportunities to give of themselves and to support other members and their families through shared faith and spiritual development. Additionally, we offer men the chance to protect the financial well-being of their families through our insurance products. These are the reasons that men choose to become Knights.”

Knights of Columbus Charities

Knights of Columbus Charities, Inc. is the organization’s 501(c)(3) entity, which enables members and others to contribute to local, regional, national, and international Knights of Columbus charitable initiatives. One hundred percent of all donations go directly to support the cause identified by the donor.

Knights of Columbus Insurance

Knights of Columbus Insurance sells a portfolio of insurance and annuities products to its members—an outgrowth of a system of support instituted by Venerable Father J. McGivney in 1882 when he founded the Knights to help families in the event of the loss of a breadwinner.

The highly rated Fortune 1000 insurance company has a force of 1,207 agents who are also Knights. Once the company’s revenue is used to cover operational costs and refunds (dividends) to our members, the remaining profits are directed to charity.

Over the last business year, Knights of Columbus Insurance issued $8.6 billion of new life insurance, provided $1 billion in benefits, including $441 million in death benefits and $262 million in refunds to members.

Anderson noted, “Our insurance program is a financial engine that not only helps our members protect their families but also provides the opportunity to give generously and support numerous charitable and spiritual causes.”

The Knights of Columbus is a fraternity of Catholic men striving to better themselves and our world by building a bridge back to faith, assisting the sick and disabled, and protecting those who can’t protect themselves--whether they are next door or around the world. Join us today.
