Issue : 131 4 October, 2019

Strict enforcement of traffic

rules is the need of the hourThe recent decision of the government to impose heavy fines

against violators of traffic rules has been vehemently opposedby a section of residents. While, the hefty fines can be the rea-son for agitation, but there can be no denying the fact that strictimplementation and enforcement of traffic discipline is the needof the hour.

In the past few years the vehicular population in Navi Mum-bai has grown manifold. The modes of transport have multi-plied and the vehicular density is increasing exponentially withevery passing year. However the quality and quantity of theroad network and traffic control aids have not kept pace withthe demand. The traffic discipline has deteriorated and thereseems to be no respect for the traffic rules and the traffic au-thorities. Rather the young generation seems to enjoy floutingthe traffic rules and seems to take pride in driving fast but rashimitating Bollywood movies. Many of them take pride in driv-ing vehicles even before they attain the mandatory qualifyingage of 18 years, to be eligible to possess a driving license. They do not have even the slightest inkling that by their be-havior they are not only playing with their lives, but are alsoputting to risk the lives of other commuters. It is very unfortu-nate that the statistics for the road accidents are increasing atan alarming pace, matching the pace at which the people aredriving these modern machines. The gravity of the situationhas forced the government to direct its attention towards roadsafety measures and to seek solutions to the problem. Cele-brating “Road Safety Week” every year is a feeble attempt inthat direction.

While a number of factors are responsible for road accidents, prime reasons are blatant flouting of traffic rules and most im-portantly primitive and inadequate traffic control aids. Trafficsignals are effective means of regulating traffic. However ifthese are installed before proper survey, they can become anuisance for the motorists and pedestrians alike. Adequatestreet lighting, smooth riding surface, properly functioning oftraffic control aids, traffic markings are some of the ways ofreducing road accidents. Since a large number of accidents in-volve pedestrians, it is necessary to devote attention towardstheir safety. An adequately designed and encroachment freepedestrian pathways are essential for segregating the vehicu-lar and pedestrian traffic and they can provide the much de-sired sense of safety and protection to the pedestrians. Specialattention should be given towards lighting pedestrian crosswalks and junctions.

An effective way of controlling and curbing accidents is thestrict implementation and enforcement of traffic rules. The driv-ing license should be issued only after rigorous examinationprocess. While helmets should be made compulsory to the rid-ers of two wheelers and fastening of seat belts should be mademandatory for the drivers of four wheelers. By imposing otherlegislative measures like introducing fines for flouting rules, imprisonment or endorsement on licenses for reckless driv-ing, road accidents can be minimized. The other field whichneeds immediate attention is traffic planning. It is today a veryspecialized field and cannot be designed by thumb rules as isbeing done today by the authorities. It needs understanding ofthe subject besides studying the traffic behaviour and the psy-chology of the commuters in a particular region / city. So thereis immediate need to have the traffic study carried out by pro-fessionals and long term planning done with futuristic approach, for Navi Mumbai, to optimize the infrastructure and to haveeasy and speedier and safe commuting.

For instance, despite regular followups, public works likerepairing of roads, sew-age, repairing of theunderpass in our areasetc., have been persis-tently ignored by thesenior leaders of Con-gress and our com-plaints fall on deafears. Our senior lead-er Dashrath Bhagatalong with many cor-porators and alsomany youths from Con-gress have joined theBJP because we areconfident that underthe leadership ofGanesh Naik, we willbe able to carry out de-velopment works forthe betterment of thesociety.”

Here we continuewith our discussion oncommon questions re-garding Homeopathy. What are the limita-tions of Homeopathy?Like every system ofmedicine, Homeopathytoo has its limitations.Emergency situationswhich require surgeryare best left to the sur-geon. However, Homeo-pathic medicines canoften negate the needfor surgery. e.g., caseslike hernia, hydrocele, ova-rian cysts, fi-broids, pleuraleffusions, kid-ney stones, etc. Wheresurgery is ab-solutely essen-tial, Homeo-pathic reme-dies help thepatient preand post-oper-atively; reduc-ing anxiety, pain, nau-sea, etc., speeding upthe recovery process.

Homeopathic medicines

seem to be the same little

white pills in every case. Are

they all the same?

The ‘little whitepills’ are sucrose pillswhich we use as a ve-hicle for the Homeo-pathic medicines. Theactual medicine, i.e.,the Homeopathic poten-cy, is added to the pillsbefore dispensing.Ready Homeopathicmedicines commercial-ly available in pharma-cies, especially in coun-tries outside India arepre-medicated with theHomeopathic potency. All patients receive Ho-meopathic medicines inthe form of a small pow-der and/or tiny pills tobe sucked. big-built people? Ho-meopathic medicinesact on the immune sys-tem of the individual bythe effect of the energyof the potentised reme-dy on the electromag-netic energy field of thebody. There is no chem-ical reaction involved, hence no chemicalquantities are required. No ‘milligrams per kgbody weight’ are re-quired every few hours. The Homeopathic ‘ener-gy effect’ is a qualityeffect and not based onthe quantity of the sub-stance.

How should we store

Homeopathic remedies?

Homeopathic reme-dies should be stored ina dry place, away fromdirect sunlight and anystrong odours. They arenot to be refrigerated. Intoday’s times, it is es-

sential that the reme-dies be kept away fromany radiation-emittinggadgets. These radia-tions can deplete thehomeopathic energiesand reduce the efficacyof the medicines. CanHomeopathic medica-tion be taken alongwith Allopathic treat-ment? There are usual-ly no issues of compati-bility, however, due tothe chemical action ofAllopathic drugs, theenergy effect of the Ho-meopathic remedy isgreatly reduced and theHomeopathic remedywill need to be repeatedmore frequently. Pa-tients on steroids canrespond to the Homeo-pathic remedy withgreat difficulty due tothe immune-suppres-sion brought about bythe steroids.

What items of food are to be

avoided during Homeopath-

ic treatment?

The general rule isto avoid strong smellingsubstances just beforeand after taking Ho-meopathic medicines. There should be nostrong smell in themouth when medicinesare to be taken. Rawonion and garlic shouldbe taken in moderation, strong coffee should beavoided as far as possi-ble. It is not an item offood but it is essentialthat any person takingHomeopathic medi-cines be aware thatcamphor in any formantidotes most Homeo-pathic remedies. Thestored medicine shouldnot be exposed to cam-phor and the patient tooshould not be using anylocal applications which

contain cam-phor. ManyA y u r v e d i cproducts con-tain camphorso it is betterto read thecontent labelscarefully be-fore use. Theeffect of cer-tain Homeo-pathic reme-dies can be af-fected by dif-

ferent food items; e.g.,the effect of Zincum Me-tallicum can be dimin-ished by drinking wine;in such cases, whileprescribing, the Ho-meopathic physicianwill inform you aboutany items of food/drinkwhich are to be avoidedas they may antidoteyour remedy.

Why is it that sometimes

Homeopathy is spelt with an

extra ‘o’, as in, Homoeopa-

thy?

Homeopathy is theway the Americansspell it, the same waythey’ve simplified co-lour to color, centre tocenter and traveller totraveler. Homoeopathyis the British way ofspelling it, the originalGerman way being Ho-meopathie. -

Rohit Sharma silences criticsAt a time when the critics were after Rohit

Sharma, he came good with a stylish century andsilenced his critics in the Vishkapatnam test. Butfor rain disruption, Rohit could have gone beyond150 in the available time. He grabbed the opportunity to open with boththe hands and made a match of it on the first day of the test againstSouth Africa. He hit a brilliant century on the rain hit day.

The right hander was mentally ready to open the innings in testmatch cricket as he is doing in both T-20 and ODI cricket. He is a goodinvestment as an opener as he is experienced. Instead of trying out newhands it is better to carry with a tried and tested hand. Thus RohitSharma can do wonders with the bat and as a vice captain he is anautomatic choice in the side.

Derailment delayHarbour line is facing several operational problems including over-

head wire detachment during busy hours. Of late, we find derailmentsare taking place in the local trains and that is causing concern. Thisdespite the fact that Sunday Mega block is taking place for maintenancework of the tracks in this section.

Total disruption of train services put the commuters inconvenienceas well. This is a regular feature and despite a less crowded route, suchhappenings create a fear among the passengers and the commuter safe-ty is at greater risk at this moment. Delay in Harbour line is a regularfeature.

Tampered auto metersDespite various measures to curb the plying of autos with tampered

meters, the cops found more than 100 such autos in Borivili and Kandi-vili corridor of the city. The switch to electronic meters in autorick-shaws was meant to prevent drivers from overcharging commuters butthe purpose is defeated as many drivers are plying their autos withtampered meters to make easy money. This is a very bad precedenceand commuters are cheated in the bargain without their knowledge. This is pinching the pocket of people, who are already suffering becauseof the high inflation level prevailing in the city. Timely measures shouldbe taken to make the city free from tampered meters over a period oftime.

Letters to the Editor.... Celebrating 4th October asWorld Animal Day

By C.K. Subramaniam

World Animal Dayis a time to celebrateand appreciate our re-lationship with theanimals that sharethe planet with us.Nine decades ago,the idea of WorldAnimal Day wasmooted by Hein-rich Zimmer-mann, the Ger-man writer. Heorganised thefirst World Ani-mal Day onMarch 24, 1925,

in the Sport Palace inBerlin, Germany.Over 5,000 people at-tended. Initially, hefound a following onlyin Germany, Austria,Switzerland andCzechoslovakia. But,Zimmermann workedon promoting WorldAnimal Day. Finally,in May 1931 at a con-gress of the world’sanimal protection or-ganisations in Flo-rence, Italy, his pro-posal to make October4 World Animal Dayuniversal, was accept-ed.

There are also oth-er days linked to ani-mals such as WorldFarmed Animals Day(October 2), WorldDay for LaboratoryAnimals (April 24),World Wildlife Day(March 3) and manymore. However, WorldAnimal Day is the oneday of the year thatembraces all animals

and the unique con-cerns of each, in everycountry. It unites theanimal welfare move-ment, mobilising itinto a global force forchange.

Ecosystems are ex-tremely fragile andwhen any species be-comes extinct, it hasserious repercussions. So, it is important toconserve the balancein our ecosystems andprotect the animals. It ensures that tens ofthousands of peoplewill maintain theirfarming and fishinglivelihoods. Over theyears, World AnimalDay has seen greatsuccess in improvingthe lives of animals.

In Egypt, the day’sevents have led to ad-ditional clauses in theEgyptian constitutionthat offer rights to an-imals. Similarly, inSudan, the parlia-ment has introducednew legislation meantto protect animals.Today, there are 89ambassadors raisingawareness, and en-couraging participa-tion in, in 76 countries

around the globe. So itis time to have a ra-tional thinking on an-imals and to have aholistic approach intaking care of animalsas well as birds.

Act for a causeincludes:- Petadoption drives,F u n d - r a i s i n gevents such asconcerts andsponsored walks,Film screening,Veterinary treat-ment camp,Peaceful protest

march, Volunteer at azoo or a park, Makeyour own pledge boardto help our a noblecause.

This is also an op-portune time to talkabout the humanetreatment of farm an-imals and to advocatefor protection of habi-tats of wild animals. This is now a socialmovement with thehope of raising thestatus of animals toimprove their lives. Toachieve this, animalwelfare organisations, community groups, youth and children’sclubs, businesses andindividuals organiseevents to draw atten-tion to animal issues.

There are initia-tives like Save Tigerday and this shouldspread to all animalsin the horizon.
