Engineering student successAt Wayne State, you’ll quickly become part of our supportive network of professors, staff and fellow students, who collaborate every day in thriving programs like our residential Learning Communities, focused tutoring, and the Academic Success Center.

Close-knit classroomsAlthough Wayne State is one of the largest universities in the country, you won’t get lost here. Our engineering faculty is there for you in the classroom, in the lab, and when you want to discuss your ideas one-on-one. In fact, the American Society for Engineering Education has ranked Wayne State amid the nation’s top 10 engineering programs with the lowest student to faculty ratios. Here, you’ll get personal attention to help you make the most of your education, with all the resources of a major university.

Funding your futureIn 2011, the College of Engineering awarded about $200,000 through nearly 100 scholarships specifically for WSU engineering students. These awards, typically offered to current WSU students, may be based on both excellent academic achievement and exemplary leadership in student activities and community service. Additionally, more than 600 general scholarship programs are available to Wayne State University students across all programs of study, and 80 percent of undergraduates are attending WSU with some form of financial aid.

The world is in your handsEngineers and computer scientists are inventors, designers and pioneers. If you can imagine a greener car, a more fertile rooftop garden, even a neural implant to restore eyesight, an engineering degree program can give you the tools you need to build it.

At Wayne State University, our faculty members and students are already working on these projects and many more in our state-of-the-art labs and throughout Detroit. Located in the heart of the Motor City, our engineering curriculum leads the nation in game-changing fields like electric-drive vehicle technology and alternative energy. And, a history rich in engineering marvels — like the mechanical heart pump that made possible the world’s first successful open heart surgery — is just one reason why Wayne State’s biomedical engineering program is one of the most respected programs in the country, known for pioneering impact biomechanics.

Here, you’ll learn from faculty experts who engineer the physical world at all levels — from nanoscale biomedical innovations to colossal manufacturing plants. On campus and in the community at large, we work toward improving the quality of life every day.

Practical Experiences A Wayne State education breaks the boundaries of the classroom. Get the global perspective employers love through study abroad, or take advantage of the city’s high concentration of internship and co-op opportunities at locally headquartered companies and organizations.

You can gain valuable hands-on experience as part of the WSU team in national engineering competitions, building everything from Formula-style racecars to robots to concrete canoes. For example, Wayne State’s College of Engineering was one of 15 universities in North America chosen to participate in EcoCAR 2: Plugging in to the Future, a one-of-a-kind initiative established by the U.S. Department of Energy and General Motors. And civil engineering students compete annually in a steel bridge competition, requiring them to build a 1/10th-scale model steel bridge that is evaluated on assembly economy, construction speed, stiffness, lightness, display and efficiency.

Other opportunities are available through the College of Engineering’s many student organizations.

Undergraduate Research The College of Engineering is known for incubating great ideas. In 2011, it experienced a record-breaking $21.8 million in research awards from grant-funding agencies and organizations. What’s more, Wayne State holds a Carnegie Foundation classification for a research activity level so high it’s shared by only 2.3 percent of American colleges and universities.

But research at Wayne State isn’t reserved for the experts. You’ll have the opportunity to work with engineering faculty on top research projects, many of which result in publication or conference presentations, as early as your freshman year. Our hands-on learning environment means you’ll spend time in the classroom and in the lab with some of the region’s top engineering minds — internationally recognized leaders whose pioneering research and development has already shaped the world around us.

The college recently kicked off its Undergraduate Research Award Matching Fund Program, providing students with support and faculty mentorship on a wide range of research projects.

International Recognition A team of Wayne State University biomedical engineering undergraduates placed second internationally in the 2012 Extreme Redesign 3D Printing Challenge. Freshmen Zahraa Bazzi, Stan Marek and Abrar Wazir submitted a design for a diabetic testing station that would allow an individual with the use of only one arm to independently test his blood glucose levels. The global contest, sponsored by Dimension 3D Printing, encourages students to submit an innovative product design, a redesign of an existing product, or an original work of art or architecture. A team from India placed first, while a Swedish team took third.

AcademicsWayne State’s College of Engineering offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in each of its departments. The college also provides degree and graduate certificate program opportunities in new technologies such as alternative energy technology and electric-drive vehicle engineering.
