Session 1: God

Personal Study

Every session in Believe contains a personal study to help you make meaningful

connections between your life and what you’re learning each week. Take some time before your

group meeting each week to read the assigned chapter from Believe and complete the weekly

personal study. In total, the personal study should take about one hour to complete. Some people

like to spread it out, devoting about ten to fifteen minutes a day. Others choose one larger block

of time during the week to work through the entire personal study in one sitting. There’s no right

or wrong way to do this! Just choose a plan that best fits your needs and schedule from week to

week.

This week before your group meeting, read Believe, Chapter 1: God. Then spend some

time allowing the Scripture to take root in your heart and reflecting on what you personally

believe about who God is.

Read

Read Believe Chapter 1: God and answer the following questions.

1. What patterns do you observe in these Scriptures?

2. As you read these passages, what questions came to mind?

File: BELIEVE Adult SG ARC.docx Page: 3

3. What did you read that surprised you? Challenged you? Inspired you? Confused

you?

4. On numerous occasions the Israelites struggled to follow God only. In what ways

can you relate to them?

5. Why do you think Joshua was able to confidently put his faith in God alone, while

others struggled with divided hearts?

6. In your own words, describe how God can be “three” and “one.”

Evaluate

Based on your reading from Believe, Chapter 1: God, evaluate your level of confidence in

the statements below, using a scale of 1–6 (1 = no confidence, 6 = complete certainty).

_________ I believe the God of the Bible is the only true God.

_________ I believe the God of the Bible is one in essence but distinct in person—

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

_________ I believe Jesus is God in the flesh—who died and rose bodily from the

dead.

_________ I believe the Holy Spirit is God and dwells in Christians to empower them

to live the Christian life.

(Key Application) No matter what ____________ I face in this life, they pale in

comparison to my salvation for eternity.

(Key Application) I need to walk in _________ and ________ grace to others.

I believe I will inherit eternal life because of what Jesus has done for me.

I believe nothing I do or have done can earn my salvation.

I believe salvation comes only through Jesus.

I believe people are saved because of what Jesus did, not because of what they do.

Based on your group’s dynamics and spiritual maturity, choose the 2–3 questions that

Rocky is a man’s man. It appears as though there’s nothing he can’t fix. He spends more

time tinkering in his garage than in his own house. Luckily, he’s your neighbor. So, when you

break something, he is always willing to lend a hand. One day in a moment of authenticity, he

confesses that he has never quite understood God and religion but knows he needs them. Yet he

fears that his past mistakes have disqualified him from ever being what he calls a “religious

person.”

Using the Key Applications from this session, answer the following questions together as

a group. (If needed, refer to your video notes for a reminder of this session’s Key Applications.)

I believe the Bible is relevant to address the needs of contemporary culture.

Based on your group’s dynamics and spiritual maturity, choose the 2–3 questions that

will lead to the best discussion about this week’s Key Idea.

1. In what ways can the Bible inform and govern your decision making in the areas

of business, family life, friendships, and recreation.

2. In what ways have you seen the Bible be specifically useful for teaching,

rebuking, correcting, and training?

3. How has understanding the Scriptures changed the way you see the world?

4. Many people are overwhelmed by the Bible, but it doesn’t have to be that way. If

you have any obstacles that get in the way of you reading and understanding God’s Word,

honestly confess them. Then, spend some time as a group discussing ways to overcome these

challenges.

Read Exodus 20:1–21 together and choose 1–2 questions that will lead to the greatest

discussion in your group.

File: BELIEVE Adult SG ARC.docx Page: 37

1. How do the Ten Commandments reveal what is most important to God?

2. How would the world be different if all of humanity were guided by the Word of

God?

3. Discuss ways that the Bible has clarified misconceptions you had about God’s

character.

4. How has the Bible given you a better understanding of who you are and your

purpose in this world?

Case Study

Use the following case study as a model for a real-life situation where you might put this

week’s Key Idea into practice.

Suzanne is a college student who attends your Bible study that meets at the local coffee

shop on Thursday mornings. As the group discusses prayer requests, Suzanne expresses her need

for wisdom in balancing her busy schedule. In the next seven days, she has to study for finals,

write a research paper, and work four shifts in the university bookstore.

A few days later, you call to check on her. She still sounds stressed but appreciates the

call. “Do you think you will be able to get everything done?” you ask. “Yes, I’ve already taken

two tests that went well, but I have one more that is really important. If I don’t do well, I will

have to take the class over again next semester. So, I’m thinking about using one of my

File: BELIEVE Adult SG ARC.docx Page: 38

roommate’s research papers from last year. I’ll change up the words a little so it sounds like me,

but it will allow me more time to study for my test. I know it’s kind of dishonest, but I don’t see

any other way to get everything done.”

Using the Key Applications from this session, what could you say or do to help Suzanne

see the importance of doing the right thing? (If needed, refer to your video notes for a reminder

of this session’s Key Applications.)

Closing Prayer

Close your time together with prayer. Share your prayer requests with one another. Ask

God to help you put this week’s Key Idea into practice.

Group Meeting

Welcome!

Welcome to Session 5 of Believe. If there are new members in your group, take a moment

to introduce yourselves to each other before watching the video. Then, feel free to get started!

Video Teaching Notes

As you watch the video for Session 5, use the following outline to record some of the main

points.

One of the most important indicators of your happiness and quality of life will come

from the answer to this question: _____________________?

Jesus offers us a new ______________ when we come to faith in him.

Key Verse: “Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he

gave the right to become ________________ of God.” (John 1:12)

Key Idea: I am _________________ because of my position as a child of God.

(Key Application) I am free from _____________________.

(Key Application) My worth comes from my position in Christ, not my

____________________.

(Key Application) I live to ____________ who I am in Christ, not to ___________

who I am.

(Key Application) I can focus on _______________ others up, not ______________

them down.

File: BELIEVE Adult SG ARC.docx Page: 45

Getting Started

Begin your discussion by reciting the Key Verse and Key Idea together as a group. On

your first attempt, use your notes if you need help. On your second attempt, try to state them

completely from memory.

Key Verse: “Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave

the right to become children of God.” (John 1:12)

Key Idea: I am significant because of my position as a child of God.

Group Discussion

As a group, discuss your thoughts and feelings about the following declarations. Which

statements are easy to declare with certainty? Which are more challenging, and why?

I believe God loves me; therefore my life has value.

I exist to know, love, and serve God.

I believe God loves me, even when I do not obey him.

I believe I am forgiven and accepted by God.

Based on your group’s dynamics and spiritual maturity, choose the 2–3 questions that

will lead to the best discussion about this week’s Key Idea.

File: BELIEVE Adult SG ARC.docx Page: 46

1. Unfortunately, most people find their identity and value in things that don’t last

(i.e., wealth, power, beauty, influence). Why is it tempting to find our worth in these fading

attributes?

2. How has this chapter given you a better understanding of who you are and your

purpose in this world?

3. How does understanding our identity in Christ change the way we interact with

the people in our lives?

4. What thoughts, feelings, or experiences are keeping you from accepting your

identity as a child of God?

Read Luke 19:1–9 together and choose 1–2 questions that will lead to the greatest

discussion in your group.

1. In what ways did Zacchaeus’s conduct change when Jesus restored his identity?

2. If you could “start over” with a new identity as Zacchaeus did, what would you

leave in your past?

3. Discuss ways that our identity in Christ frees us to live without fear or anxiety.

File: BELIEVE Adult SG ARC.docx Page: 47

Case Study

Use the following case study as a model for a real-life situation where you might put this

week’s Key Idea into practice.

Sam is one of those guys who appear to be good at everything. He’s highly educated,

frequently promoted, a gourmet cook, and plays the ukulele. He is a model citizen, faithful

husband, and coaches his kid’s little league team. You are shocked when Sam’s wife asks you to

pray for him. She explains that he barely sleeps at night and has been prescribed medication to

control panic attacks. He has always been driven to succeed, she says, but never seems to find

the contentment in his achievements.

Using the Key Applications from this session, answer the following questions together as

a group. (If needed, refer to your video notes for a reminder of this session’s Key Applications.)

1. What could you say and do to help Sam find peace in his identity in Christ?

2. In what ways do you relate to the pressure Sam feels to succeed?

3. What practical steps can people take to adjust their identity-finding process if it’s

unhealthy or misguided?

Closing Prayer

Close your time together with prayer. Share your prayer requests with one another. Ask

God to help you put this week’s Key Idea into practice.

___________________ in all the wrong places.

(Key Application) God will use the church to _________________ his purposes in

your life.

(Key Application) God will use ________ to accomplish his purposes in the lives of

others and even the world.

Getting Started

Begin your discussion by reciting the Key Verse and Key Idea together as a group. On

your first attempt, use your notes if you need help. On your second attempt, try to state them

completely from memory.

Key Verse: “Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect

Group Discussion

As a group, discuss your thoughts and feelings about the following declarations. Which

statements are easy to declare with certainty? Which are more challenging, and why?

I believe God gives spiritual gifts to every Christian for service to the church and the

community.

I believe that I cannot grow as a Christian unless I am an active member of a local

church.

I believe the community of true believers is Christ’s body on earth.

I believe the purpose of the church is to share the gospel and nurture Christians to

maturity in Christ.

Based on your group’s dynamics and makeup, choose the 2–3 questions that will lead to

the best discussion about this week’s Key Idea.

1. Describe specific ways that your local church has helped you grow in spiritual

maturity.

2. If it’s unhealthy to live life in isolation, why do so many people choose to live

that way?

3. Many people seek to find purpose and community outside of the church. In what

ways could this harm the church community and hamper an individual’s growth?

File: BELIEVE Adult SG ARC.docx Page: 56

4. Describe three simple ways that your group could assist your local church in its

redemptive mission.

Read Genesis 12:1–3 together and choose 1–2 questions that will lead to the greatest

discussion in your group.

1. God’s covenantal promise to Abraham and his descendants was to bless them. In

turn, they would be a blessing to the world. In what specific ways are these promises displayed

in your church today?

2. Brainstorm some simple ways that you, your family, and your church can be a

blessing to the world.

3. Discuss the ways you have seen God’s blessing on your life.

Case Study

Use the following case study as a model for a real-life situation where you might put this

week’s Key Idea into practice.

Your friend Jackie has been a principal at her school for nearly two decades. When you

run into her at the grocery store you can tell that she is not her typical cheerful self. So, you ask

File: BELIEVE Adult SG ARC.docx Page: 57

if she is okay. Her response catches you off guard. “I’m okay, I guess. This school year has been

really tough on me. In fact, each year seems to be more challenging. The kids are great! Don’t

misunderstand me. I’ll never get tired of them. I just wish I could do more to help. You see, most

of my kids come from families that are struggling on numerous levels. The parents have good

intentions, but they are ill-equipped financially, relationally, and emotionally—and there is only

so much we can do as educators.”

Using the Key Applications from this session, what advice would you give to Jackie? (If

needed, refer to your video notes for a reminder of this session’s Key Applications.)

Closing Prayer

Close your time together with prayer. Share your prayer requests with one another. Ask

God to help you put this week’s Key Idea into practice.

Session 7: Humanity

Personal Study

Last week you took a deeper look at the role of the church in God’s great plan. Did you

recognize the part that you personally play in that plan? If you are not part of a local church,

consider finding a church home—a place where you can get involved in accomplishing God’s

plan for the world. This week before your group meeting, read Believe, Chapter 7: Humanity.

Then spend some time allowing the Scripture to take root in your heart and praying that God

would reveal to you why it’s easier for you to love some people and groups than others.

Read

Read Believe, Chapter 7: Humanity and answer the following questions.

1. What patterns do you observe in these Scriptures?

2. As you read these passages, what questions came to mind?

3. What did you read that disarmed you? Tested you? Enthused you? Confused you?

4. In what way is humanity set apart from the rest of God’s creation? How does our

part of the creation story differ from the rest?

File: BELIEVE Adult SG ARC.docx Page: 61

5. In your opinion, which section of this chapter demonstrates God’s faithful love

the most? Why?

6. Why is it easier to classify our personal sin as “not that bad” but the sin of others

as “detestable”? Why does God not see it this way?

7. Is there a certain race, political affiliation, age group, nationality, or

socioeconomic crowd that is hard for you to love? What needs to change in order for you to see

them the way God sees them? How can the Holy Spirit help make this change happen?

8. Think of a time when God changed your heart toward a person or people group.

How did this change come about?

Evaluate

Based on your reading from Believe, Chapter 7: Humanity, evaluate your level of

confidence in the statements below, using a 1–6 scale (1 = no confidence, 6 = complete

certainty).

_________ I believe that each person possesses a sinful nature and is in need of God’s

forgiveness.

_________ I believe we are created in the image of God and therefore have equal

value, regardless of race, religion, or gender.

File: BELIEVE Adult SG ARC.docx Page: 62

_________ I believe all people are loved by God; therefore I too should love them.

_________ I believe the Holy Spirit is God and dwells in Christians to empower them

to live the Christian life.

Take Action

(Key Application) I see and treat all people the way _______ sees and treats them.

(Key Application) I am compelled to tell all people about ___________.

(Key Application) I believe all people are __________ by God and __________ Jesus

Christ as their Savior.

Getting Started

Begin your discussion by reciting the Key Verse and Key Idea together as a group. On

your first attempt, use your notes if you need help. On your second attempt, try to state them

completely from memory.

Key Verse: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever

believes in him shall not parish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

Key Idea: I believe all people are loved by God and need Jesus Christ as their Savior.

Group Discussion

As a group, discuss your thoughts and feelings about the following declarations. Which

statements are easy to declare with certainty? Which are more challenging, and why?

I believe that each person possesses a sinful nature and is in need of God’s forgiveness.

I believe we are created in the image of God and therefore have equal value, regardless

of race, religion, or gender.

File: BELIEVE Adult SG ARC.docx Page: 65

I believe all people are loved by God; therefore I too should love them.

I believe God desires all people to have a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Based on your group’s dynamics and makeup, choose the 2–3 questions that will lead to

the best discussion of this week’s Key Idea.

1. Describe the thoughts and feelings that come to mind when you hear about God’s

radical love for you.

2. Do you find it difficult to receive God’s love and forgiveness? Why or why not?

3. What personal disciplines can we adopt that invite the Holy Spirit to change our

hearts toward difficult people?

4. Describe a time when God changed your heart toward a person or people group.

What specifically caused the change within you?

Read Romans 1:18–32 and Luke 6:27–36 together and choose 1–2 questions that will

lead to the greatest discussion in your group.

1. What does Romans 1 reveal about humanity and the human condition?

2. How does loving our enemies show the world that we are children of God?

File: BELIEVE Adult SG ARC.docx Page: 66

3. The Bible calls us to love difficult people the way God does. Is this possible? If

so, how?

Case Study

Use the following case study as a model for a real-life situation where you might put this

week’s Key Idea into practice.

Charlie, Jamie, and their two kids have been coming to church with you for the last year

and a half. In the beginning they were reluctant, but now they are eagerly seeking to apply God’s

Word to their lives—and the changes are evident. During a lunch conversation, Charlie mentions

a neighbor who has been getting on his nerves. “Honestly, I’m reluctant to say it, but I can’t

stand the guy. His yard is always a mess, he never makes eye contact, and we couldn’t be further

apart when it comes to politics. During election times, his yard is filled with signs supporting

people and ideas that I think are just plain dangerous. I know we are supposed to love our

neighbors as ourselves, but I’m having a hard time finding something lovable about this guy.”

Using only the Key Applications from this session, what practical advice would you give

to Charlie? (If needed, refer to your video notes for a reminder of this session’s Key

Applications.)

Closing Prayer

Close your time together with prayer. Share your prayer requests with one another. Ask

God to help you put this week’s Key Idea into practice.

Session 8: Compassion

Personal Study

Last week you explored your beliefs about humanity. Were you able to identify why it’s

naturally easier for you to love some people more than others? Maybe you learned something

about yourself or about God that will help you see others as God sees them. That’s great! This

week before your group meeting, read Believe, Chapter 8: Compassion. Then spend some time

allowing the Scripture to take root in your heart and praying that God would help you develop

compassion for those around you.

Read

Read Believe, Chapter 8: Compassion and answer the following questions.

1. What patterns do you observe in these Scriptures?

2. As you read these passages, what thoughts or questions came to mind?

3. What did you read that excited you? Surprised you? Unnerved you? Confronted

you?

4. In your own words, briefly describe your understanding of compassion.

File: BELIEVE Adult SG ARC.docx Page: 70

When people cry out, “Where is God when it comes to the poor and injustice on the

earth?” the answer should be, “Look at God’s people. They are right in the

_____________ of it.”

Getting Started

Begin your discussion by reciting the Key Verse and Key Idea together as a group. On

your first attempt, use your notes if you need help. On your second attempt, try to state them

completely from memory.

Key Verse: “Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the

oppressed. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.” (Psalm

82:3–4)

Key Idea: I believe God calls all Christians to show compassion to those in need.

Group Discussion

As a group, discuss your thoughts and feelings about the following declarations. Which

statements are easy to declare with certainty? Which are more challenging, and why?

File: BELIEVE Adult SG ARC.docx Page: 74

God calls me to be involved in the lives of the poor and suffering.

I believe I am responsible before God to show compassion to the sick and imprisoned.

I believe that I should stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves.

I believe that Christians should not purchase everything they can afford, so that their

discretionary money might be available to help those in need.

Based on your group’s dynamics and makeup, choose the 2–3 questions that will lead to

the best discussion of this week’s Key Idea.

1. In what ways have you experienced compassion from a family member, friend, or

stranger?

2. What is the difference between trying to “fix” poverty and injustice and “suffering

with” someone who is experiencing it?

3. In addition to a financial gesture, what other compassionate ways are there to

comfort someone in need?

4. In what ways can debt and financial stress hinder compassionate generosity?

What would it look like to strategically budget, so that an individual is equipped to act

generously in times of need and injustice?

File: BELIEVE Adult SG ARC.docx Page: 75

Read Psalm 82:3–5 together and choose 1–2 questions that will lead to the greatest

discussion in your group.

1. Are you aware of any weak, needy, oppressed, or fatherless people in your

community? If not, what steps can you take to raise your awareness? If so, discuss what can be

done to “defend” and support them.

2. Pick a specific situation (i.e., widow, orphan, refugee, homeless, addict) and

discuss what it would look like to “suffer with” the individual in need.

3. List some reasons why many people choose to ignore the needy and oppressed.

Then discuss what it would take to break free from the status quo and be a defender of the weak

and oppressed.

Case Study

Use the following case study as a model for a real-life situation where you might put this

week’s Key Idea into practice.

Cassandra has worked hard to get where she is in life. She grew up in a big family with a

meager income but has found a way to be successful despite her modest beginnings. You have

been working out together for two years. Before you leave the gym, you always end your time in

prayer together. In a moment of authenticity, she tells you about her brother who has fallen on

File: BELIEVE Adult SG ARC.docx Page: 76

hard times. She has been avoiding his calls because she doesn’t know what to say or how to “fix”

his financial problems.

Using the Key Applications from this session, what practical advice would you give to

Cassandra? (If needed, refer to your video notes for a reminder of this session’s Key

Applications.)

Closing Prayer

Close your time together with prayer. Share your prayer requests with one another. Ask

God to help you put this week’s Key Idea into practice.

Christians recognize they are not _____________ who make contributions to God, but

rather managers of everything we are and own.

(Key Application) I move from owner to ________________.

(Key Application) What does God want me to _____ with what he has given me?

Being a manager is so much more ____________ than being an owner.

I ________ over the deed of my house and life to God.

File: BELIEVE Adult SG ARC.docx Page: 83

Getting Started

Begin your discussion by reciting the Key Verse and Key Idea together as a group. On

your first attempt, use your notes if you need help. On your second attempt, try to state them

2. Can the poor widow’s example be emulated if you are a person of wealth? If so,

how?

File: BELIEVE Adult SG ARC.docx Page: 85

3. Who in your life has the poor widow’s mentality toward their possessions? What

week’s Key Idea into practice.

Financial stress has forced Sophia to sell her house and purchase a small loft in the city.

Although she knows this move is the wisest thing for her to do, she admits that having to

downsize makes her feel like a failure. Although her new loft only has room for half of her
