SharePoint Farm Troubleshooting Guide

Forth, IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM AREA OR ROOT CAUSE(S)

The challenge is to ensure that you have thorough and accurate information about the problem and the symptoms that it causes. To do this, you can start by answering some basic questions: What area is impacted that is causing the issue(s)?

Performance

Slow Load (Page Refresh)

Intermittent Access (Web Front End failure?)

Code- Server Resources

Disk – Database Queuing

Network Infrastructure

Network Gateways and paths available

Routers routing data

VLANS Configured

Firewalls are configured correctly

Server Hosting (VM) and Storage

Server Firewall - Anti-Virus

VM Session, Resources Allocated,

Host file Pointers

Active Directory – Accounts - Permissions

Right Account, Correct Group, Right Access, Accurate Rights

Database

Access and Connectivity

Locks and Logs

SharePoint Environment

If dependent on a service, is the service running?

If dependent on a site collection, or site feature, is it enabled?

Are all applications pools Active?

Is the Secure Store Service provisioned and running?

Is the Claims to Windows Token Service (C2WTS) running?

Did you set up any required Accounts for Services - SQL Access?

Are any service applications associated with a proxy group?

Have you checked the Windows application event log?

Have you enabled trace logging and checked the ULS?

Have you tried flushing out server-side caches (iisreset /noforce)?

Sixth, COLLECT FEEDBACK FOR LESSONS LEARNED”

SHARE WITH TEAM

Even once you know your solution, you need to know what caused your issue. Was it normal growth of your farm, or a patch rollout that wasn’t fully tested? What needs to change to make sure it doesn’t happen again? Don’t let yourself make the same mistake twice. Document your findings and update your KB and wiki. Share your knowledge with teammates so others know what happened and how it was resolved. You should also review the issue to determine how you can tackle similar problems effectively in the future if they happen.

What are the Tools we Use to Diagnose and Understand Root Cause?

ULS Viewer Download link: http://archive.msdn.microsoft.com/ULSViewer

ULS viewer allows you to view the SharePoint logs in real time, or from the log files.

ULS Log Merge PowerShell Technique - Pulls errors from all Server(s) Logs

Merge-SPLogFile -Path D:\SharePoint\Logs\ULSError.log -Overwrite -StartTime "01/13/2015 10:00" -EndTime

"01/13/2015 04:00" -Correlation "1a23df9c-5fb8-d082-9c05-7488c2e58466"
