Session Three Art

This poem is only like a starter for you. What comes next is the main dish to be bitten, swallowed, and reflected upon in class! The Road Not Taken TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; 5 Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that, the passing there Had worn them really about the same, 10 And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I marked the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way I doubted if I should ever come back. 15 I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. This  poem  is  only  like  a  starter  for  you.  What  comes  next  is  the  main  dish  to  be  bitten,  swallowed,  and  reflected  upon  in  class!

The  Road  Not  Taken

TWO  roads  diverged  in  a  yellow  wood,      And  sorry  I  could  not  travel  both      And  be  one  traveler,  long  I  stood      And  looked  down  one  as  far  as  I  could      To  where  it  bent  in  the  undergrowth;                    5          Then  took  the  other,  as  just  as  fair,      And  having  perhaps  the  better  claim      Because  it  was  grassy  and  wanted  wear;      Though  as  for  that,  the  passing  there      Had  worn  them  really  about  the  same,      10          And  both  that  morning  equally  lay      In  leaves  no  step  had  trodden  black. Robert  Frost  (1874-‐1963)  American  noted  Poet

1. What  is  your  definition  for  art?  What  is  your  favorite  type  of  art?  Are  you  an  artist?  What  kind  of  art  are  you  adept  at?

2. Do  you  ever  frequent  art  galleries?  If  yes,  what  prompts  you  to  do  so?  3. Do  you  reckon  that  the  present  day  breakthroughs  in  technology  would

jeopardize  the  value  of  art  through  replicas?    4. Do  you  think  it  is  plausible/feasible/tenable  to  spend  a  huge  amount  of

money  on  a  piece  of  art?  Why  should  people  purchase  art?  Do  you  reckon  that  art  should  be  at  the  service  of  art  (art  for  art’s  sake:  l’art  pour  l’art?)  or  you  think  art  should  be  related  to  society  and  people’s  afflictions?

5. Art  should  be  for  entertainment  or  intellectual  growth?  Are  people  mesmerized  by  shallow  cinema  more  than  meaningful  cinema?  Why  do  you  think  European  cinema  can  captivate  and  enchant  its  own  audience?

6. Do  you  think  certain  forms  of  art  can  be  indoctrinated?  Or  do  you  believe  that  art  is  innate  and  not  something  to  be  inculcated  or  instructed?  Does  it  belong  to  the  nurture  or  nature?

7. Do  you  have  any  favorites  in  music,  cinema,  painting  …?  8. What  genres  in  cinema  and  music  are  you  more  fond  of?    9. What  does  blockbuster  and  fluff  mean  in  cinema?  Can  you  name  any?    10. Why  do  you  think  Iranian  new  generations  are  infatuated  with  the  Western

cinema?    11. And  your  own  questions?!
