Ongoing helmet research at KTH• Set a new test standard for all helmet segments
– Member in SIS (Sweden)– Member in CEN TC158 (EU). – Member in ASTM (US).
• Safer helmets– FIS - Set a new specification for DH and Super-G helmets.– WG leader in COST TU1101 - Injury reconstruction of bike
accidents. The goal is a better understanding of bike accidents in order to set a new spec for helmets and test methods.

The problem!
• About 20 cyclists and 40 MC drivers are killed, and about 300 cyclists and 300 MC drivers are severely injured every year in Sweden.
• The most common and severe injuries from bike and motorcycle accidents are head injuries.
• Helmet use in EU is 1-37% (Sweden 27%).
• Helmets design have not changed much the last decades

Proposal for a new oblique test standard
• Member in ECE (European test standard committee), ASTM (US).
• Active in FIS • For equestrian and bike the proposed impact speed is
7m/s and the impact angle is 30 degree. • The test is done without the neck.• Three different impact sites on helmet.• Use normal drop tower for free falling head. • Pass/Fail criteria – need to decide on injury level – mild
or severe.
