Why?

• People in Kenya and Tanzania are suffering from micronutrient malnutrition; • Small farmers’ producity is low income low; • Vegetable seed and raw product markets don’t work well • BoP-consumers have no/limited access to nutritious food • Project aims to improve this!

Private Sector Motivation: • Breeding at Afrisem and selling seeds = Not at all ‘business as usual’ • New ‘world’ for Rijk Zwaan: new farmers, new clients, new environment, new

markets, new chains, new vegetables, etc. • Need to collaborate with partners that bring additional strengths • Need to collaborate with partners that know very well the local situation and work

closely with farmers and consumers…

What will this workstream deliver?

• One important way to contribute to decrease malnutrition is : vegetables • Vegetables need to be produced, need to be marketed and need to become

available to consumers (especially BoP-consumers)

What do we need: • Quality seeds and knowledge on growing vegetables (RZ) • Market linkages • Access to finance • (Farmers) organisation • Access to nutritious and affordable vegetables (fresh; dried) for BoP consumers

organizing farmer cooperatives. • Local partners will complement the expertise of Rijk Zwaan in

transferring that expertise to the farmers
