Page 1 24 Hours that Changed the World Session 4: Jesus, Barabbas and Pilate Icebreaker: If you had been at Jesus’ trial, with which character would you have most likely identified – Pilate, the crowd, Barabbas or someone else? Class Informal Poll: Is our world full of a people who typically favor love or violence? Opening Prayer (Volunteer) The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked advance against me to devour me, it is my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall. Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then I will be confident. Teach me your way, Lord; lead me in a straight path because of my oppressors. Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes, for false witnesses rise up against me, spouting malicious accusations. I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord. (Psalm 27:1-3, 11-14) And all God’s people said… Amen.” Our Biblical Foundation – Mark 15:1-15 (2 Volunteers) * All scripture citations are from the New International Version (NIV) unless otherwise specified. Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin, made their plans. So they bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate. 2 “Are you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate. “You have said so,” Jesus replied. 3 The chief priests accused him of many things. 4 So again Pilate asked him, “Aren’t you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of.” 5 But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed.
