To Read:
A diary is a personal piece of writing in which the writer expresses his or her
views, ideas, opinions and thoughts freely.
It helps in maintaining a record of events and happenings for future reference.
It helps us to express our feelings and emotions.
It acts like friend as we can share our thoughts, views and ideas freely.
It helps us to reflect upon our actions and facilitates self-improvement through self-
introspection.
When we write a diary, we use the past tense to describe actions, events,
happenings or incidents that have already taken place.
A diary is written in the ‘first person’. You must include the words ‘I’, ‘my’, ‘we’,
‘our’, ‘me’, ‘us’, ‘myself’, ‘mine’, ‘ourselves’ and ‘ours’.
Write the details about when and where the events took place.
Organize the content in a systematic manner.
Arrange the events in chronological order.
While writing a diary, you must mention the details of the most important or
interesting events.
Describe feelings, reflections and emotions.
Steps to write a diary:
Begin the diary entry by including the day, date and time.
Include the salutation – ‘Dear Diary’ as you can consider the diary to be your friend as
you can share all your feelings, thoughts and ideas.
Organize your ideas properly with an introductory statement, the main content and the
concluding statement.
Tuesday
Dear Diary
I woke up early today. I was very excited as our parents had planned a visit to the zoo. I
got ready quickly. I packed my favourite snacks in my picnic backpack. But, when I went
downstairs, my parents informed me that the plan had been cancelled. My father had
received an urgent call from his office. I was really disappointed and upset. But to my
surprise, my father completed his work within an hour. We were able to go to the zoo as
planned. My joy and excitement knew no bounds. We enjoyed ourselves at the zoo. It
was a day filled with fun and frolic. I am really grateful to God for blessing me with such

wonderful parents who love me and take care of me. I love my mom and dad. Now I am

Science
7 e) Ans We see something , when light enters through the pupil and forms an upside down
picture on the retina . The retina has nerve cells, which send a message to the brain about
what it sees. The brain interprets the message into a picture, which we see.
Diagram on page No-38
f)Ans The outer ear, called as pinna, acts like a funnel and collects sound waves and sends
them through the eardrum present in middle ear. The middle ear, which is made up of three
bones, sends the sound waves to inner ear. The cochlea, present in inner ear, changes sound
wave to electrical signal and sends it to the brain by the nerves. The brain interprets this
signal as sound.
g)Ans The tongue is the main organ of taste, carrying four taste buds namely sweet, salty,
sour and bitter. Nerves carry taste messages from the taste buds to the brain. The brain
interprets the taste.
h)Ans The skin is the largest sense organ, which covers our whole body and protects the
body parts underneath. The skin contains nerve endings, which detect the sensations like
touch, heat, pain or pressure.

Long Answer Questions:
(a) Maps are definitely more useful than globes. They give us more detailed information than
globes. They are easier to carry around. Unlike globes, they can be folded or rolled and
carried anywhere.
(b) There are certain limitations of using maps. Since Earth is spherical in shape and its
surface is curved, therefore, it is not easy to represent a curved surface on a flat surface of
paper.
(c) There are four main directions — north, south, east and west. If we look at a map, we will
see that top of map shows north with arrow marked 'N'. Once we know where north direction
lies, we can easily find other direction. The south is opposite to the north, the east is to the
right and the west lies on the left.
(d) When a map is drawn, the actual distances between these places are reduced so that they
can fit on a paper. The ratio between the distance on the map and the actual distance is
known as the scale of the map. For example, we can use 1 cm on the map to represent an
actual distance of 100 km.
(e) Use of symbols and colours in a map:
• Symbols are used to represent mountains, rivers, bridges, railway lines, dams, etc. For
example, the land boundary of a country is shown by thick dashes and dots in black. A city is
marked by a circle.
• Colours are used to represent different landforms such as highlands are shown in shades of
brown, plains are shown in shades of green, shades of blue are used to represent water
bodies. Yellow is used to represent deserts. This colour scheme is used for maps all over the
world.
A map of a large city will be more accurate that the map of a large continent because a
map which depicts a small territory is referred to as a large scale map. This is because
the area of a land being represented by the map has been scaled down less, or in other
words, the scale is longer.
A large scale map only shows a small area, but it shows it in great detail. A map
depicting a large area, such as an entire continent, is considered a small scale map. In
order to show the entire continent, the map must be scaled down until it is much
