"It remains to consider how we can retrieve this disaster. The great thing is to prevent his doing anything. As long as he does not convert it into action, it does not matter how much he thinks about this new repentance. Let the little brute wallow in it. Let him, if he has any bent that way, write a book about it; that is often an excellent way of sterilizing the seeds which the Enemy plants in a human soul. Let him do anything but act. No amount of piety in his imagination and affections will harm us if we can keep it out of his will.

As one of the humans has said, active habits are strengthened by repetition but passive ones are weakened. The more often he feels without acting, the less he will be able ever to act, and in the long run, the less he will be able to feel."

StonesConcerning this salvation, the

prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in

them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. It was

revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in

the things that have now been announced to you through those

who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look.

The introduction to 1 Peter focuses its message on new-creation Christian life in the middle of an old-creation hostile world, a new life that is to be understood on the basis of "time" and "text." "Time" in that 1 Peter proposes that for the believer, life in the present is to be based on the past and propelled by the future. "Text" in that 1 Peter founds this understanding on Scripture; what is going on in the past, present, and future for God's people in the church conforms to the Word, both written and incarnate.

Gentile believers, included now in God's people and even addressed as Israel, are for God's praise as they are reborn, a rebirth that focuses them on the future revelation of Christ and the consummation of their faith, a rebirth that brings them suffering in the present as they move toward salvation, a rebirth that is grounded in the past on God's word proclaimed long ago by the prophets.

How do we persevere in suffering?

• Scripture. It requires a messianic interpretation and community appropriation of the OT.

• Salvation. It requires a very firm hold on our future hope.

• Situation. It requires the exercise of faith in the present, believing that suffering is an integral part of the Lord’s plan for salvation and that what He’s promised in His Word (esp. about coming salvation) is TRUE!
