“After independence, I searched for some dramatic way to distinguish ourselves
from other Third World countries. I settled for a clean and green Singapore. One
arm of my strategy was to make Singapore into an oasis in Southeast Asia, for if
we had First World standards, then businessmen and tourists would make us a
base for their business and tours of the region.”

Economic and population growth results in growing amounts of waste generated.
At the current rate of waste disposal, Singapore will need to build
5
• Awareness of environmental issues has been growing locally and internationally
• UN SDGs unite the international community with a blueprint to achieve a
sustainable future for all
• Singapore’s efforts to tackle our environmental challenges can contribute to
SDGs, especially in:
• Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production);
• Goal 13 (Climate Action); and
• Goal 14 (Life Below Water)*
• Technology has enhanced our tools to solve some of these problems
• Singapore thus needs to aspire towards a resource efficient
and sustainable Zero Waste Nation to face our challenges
*Preventing marine pollution

Singapore’s commitment towards addressing climate change
Objectives of energy labelling and standards
1. Mandatory Energy Labelling Scheme (MELS) a) Empowers end-users to make more informed
purchasing choices
b) Encourages suppliers to bring in more EE appliances
as technology improves
2. Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS)a) Raise average energy efficiency of households
b) Result in lifecycle cost savings for households and
industries
3. Contribute to 2020 and 2030 Carbon Mitigation
Targets
