The next slide an example of how a box plot can summarize salary differences in Major League Baseball for the 2003 season. In this case, outlying data points (Alex Rodriguez – Texas, Carlos Delgado – Toronto) draw attention away from the bars, and a plot without plotted outliers (an option in most statistical packages) can show more with respect to team salary quartiles.
