Pentecost | Eighteenth Sunday
8:30 am & 10:45 am September 23, 2018
worship notes
The application and implication of Jesus’ sacrifice to the relationship of
greatness to humility in the life of a Christian is the focus for today. May
the Christ’s coming to us in Word and Sacrament result in our better re-
flecting his mind on this matter.
Nursery Nursery care during the 10:45 am service is in Room 101. Drop off ei-ther before the start of worship or after the chil-dren’s message.
Children are welcome to stay in the service too. Quiet Bags and Chil-dren’s Bulletins are avail-able at the Welcome Cen-ter.
Kids Church Kids Church is an option for preschoolers through 4th graders in the 10:45 am. It starts after the children’s message in Rms 100-104.
Hearing Assistance The sanctuary is equipped with Williams Hearing Assist technolo-gy. Personal receivers are at the AV console in the rear of the sanctuary.

Today’s the last day to sign up to be scheduled for ushering , coffee set-up, and/or
coffee clean-up. Sign up sheets are on the hallway bulletin board.
Acts, Epistles, and Life of Paul
Mondays and Thursdays beginning October 15
A new in-depth small group Bible study starts next month. It’s about the book of
Acts, the life of the Apostle Paul and all of his epistles. There will be weekly home-
work. Participants can choose to attend on Monday evenings at 6:30 pm beginning
October 15 or they can attend Thursday mornings at 9:00 am beginning October
18. The class will meet in the Youth Center. Sign up on the bulletin board or by
contacting Tom Marten in the church office. You may pick up the first lesson from
the office to get an idea of what the class will be like.
G.I.F.T. Nights
Wednesdays
Are you coming to GIFT Nights (Growing In Faith Together) this Fall? Dinner is
5:30-6:00 pm (usually pizza). From 6:00-7:00 pm grades 1-5 experience an up-
beat curriculum about the life of Jesus. They learn, sing, play, act, dance, craft and
tackle a few community projects! Grades 6-8 meet for their catechism classes dur-
ing that same hour. There’s something for mom and dad too: adult Bible study
while the kids are in class. The focus for adults is on the same Bible stories that
will be taught our children in the coming weekend’s Sunday School.
Choir Wednesdays, 7:00 pm
If you’d like to sing in the choir this fall, rehearsals are every week in the sanctu-
ary. No experience necessary.
Youth Group Service Project Sunday, October 7, 3:00 pm
COS middle school and high school students (as well as parents) are invited to help
out at the Rockford Make It & Take It Scarecrow Building Festival benefitting
North Kent Connect and the Rockford Area Museum. Volunteers may sign up on
the bulletin board or through the COS Rock App.
Youth Center for Middle Schoolers! Sunday, September 30, 4:00 pm
6-8th graders now have their own bi-weekly youth center. The next one is next
Sunday. P

The congregation sings the refrain.
Cantor: O God, you are my God; for you I long; for you my soul is thirsting. My
body pines for you like a dry, weary land without water. So I gaze on you
in the sanctuary to see your strength and your glory.
C: ♫ Refrain

Cantor: For your love is better than life, my lips will speak your praise. So I will
bless you all my life, in your name I will lift up my hands. My soul shall be
filled as with a banquet, my mouth shall praise you with joy.
C: ♫ Refrain
Cantor: On my bed I remember you. On you I muse through the night for you have
been my help; in the shadow of your wings I rejoice. My soul clings to you;

Holy Gospel Mark 9:30-37
Children’s Message (10:45 am)
Hymn 478 With the Lord Begin Your Task
Sermon
L: In Christ, you have heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation.
C: We believe in him and are marked with the seal of the promised Holy
Spirit.
L: Living together in trust and hope, we confess our faith.
Apostles’ Creed
All: I believe in God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the
Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the
dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the
communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the
body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
L: Build yourselves up in your most holy faith;
C: pray in the Holy Spirit.
L: Keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait
C: for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you eternal life.

Confession & Absolution
L: God has given us the ministry of reconciliation. Therefore, let us be
reconciled to God and to one another.
Gracious God…
C: have mercy on us. In your compassion forgive our sins, known and
unknown, things done and left undone. Uphold us by your Spirit so
that we may live and serve you in newness of life, to the honor and
glory of your holy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
L: The almighty and merciful Lord grants you pardon, forgiveness and
remission of all your sins.
C: Amen.

Prayers of the Church
Submit specific prayer requests before worship begins via the Prayer Pages at the Welcome
Center. Each intercession concludes with the words:
L: Lord, in your mercy,
C: hear our prayer.
The Prayers of the Church conclude with the words:
L: All these things and whatever else you see that we need, grant us, O God
for the sake of Christ, who died and rose again, and now lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.
C: Amen.
Lord’s Prayer
C: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come,
your will be done on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and forever. Amen.
Holy Communion
We offer our New Life in Christ course to anyone desiring to receive the Sacrament here at
COS. Please take the course prior to communing here for the first time. Contact Pastor
