Upper Hunter Shire Council will contribute an additional $28,550 each year over the next four years to help stop the spread of the worst invasive plants. The funding is in addition to Council’s annual contribution which in 2016/17 was $144,000.Noxious weed-management is undertaken by the Upper Hunter County Council (weeds), a combined initiative of Upper Hunter, Muswellbrook and Singleton shire councils.

Across the three shires, hundreds of hectares of high risk sites and several hundred kilometres of pathways are treated for noxious plants on public lands every year.

The plants treated include Mother of Millions, Green Cestrum, Scotch Broom, African Boxthorns, Paterson’s Curse, Prickly Pear and Tiger Pear.

Treatments can include the breeding and distribution of insects that target particular noxious weeds.

The County Council also inspects over 1000 public properties for noxious plants as well as all nurseries and other outlets that sell plants.

Weed Control handbooks and other education material is distributed to raise awareness of the problem.

Take a ramble through the decorative world of Margaret Preston with Tom Thompson who will speak at Scone ADFAS on June 6 at the Scone Arts & Crafts Centre. Margaret Preston was an infl uential Australian landscape and still-life artist of the early 20th Century. Margaret constantly experimented with a variety of media, producing still lifes, vibrant prints and hand-coloured woodcuts. Her dynamic designs and unerring sense of colour allowed her to break traditional barriers.

Mr Thompson will follow up his talk with a half-study day on June 7. He will share the highs and lows of his career. Tom Thompson is a publisher of Australian Literature and History. Tom’s Hidden Treasures programme with Tony Delroy’s Night Life has continued for over fi fteen years. Tom has also worked with the Collectors programme with Claudia Chan Shaw. At a signature event on Tuesday, 16 May 2017, Newcastle Business Club invited well-known entrepreneurs and ‘sharks’, Naomi Simson and Dr Glen Richards, to talk about their business journeys but also to hear pitches from local entrepreneurs. In conjunction with KOFM, Newcastle Business Club ran a competition, including not only a $15,000 advertising package for the winner, but also the opportunity to meet and pitch to Ms Simson and Dr Richards.

Whilst there could be only one winner, announced by KOFM’s Tanya Wilks, - Mae Laine, an Australian lifestyle brand by Kylie Wiblen – the competition judges also thought another entrepreneurial business deserved a mention – CoverMe by Tony Singh. Newcastle Business Club president, Dene Kilpatrick, said the two entrepreneurs provided an indication of the amazing businesses being borne in the region. “Both Naomi and Glen were impressed with the businesses chosen to pitch to them – from very different ends of the scale,” Dene said. “They provided great feedback and advice to Kylie and Tony, but also encouraged the room to support local startups.”

The event was sponsored by Merchant Business Brokers and co-founder Shane Fox said it was an exciting and inspiration event. “As a business owner I attend many events, but this one stands out for me, as it had a lot packed into a short time!” Shane said. “We got to hear some valuable words of wisdom from people who have done the hard yards, as well as learn about some emerging businesses and their plans for the future.”

Local filmmakers homecoming production for women in filmThree female Novocastrian filmmakers are returning to make a film in the Hunter region after spending several years interstate developing their craft.Producer Catherine Williams, Writer/Director Heidi Lee Douglas and Director of Photography Meg White are collaborating to make their film ‘Devil Woman’. An environmental horror film that will be filmed near Dungog during May. Actors from the Newcastle and Central Coast area gained the lead roles for Devil Woman.

The lead actors are Marigold Pazar, Flame Kimball, Peter Healy and Shaun Anthony Robinson. The filmmakers wouldn’t be able to do this film locally without the help of the local community. To do this they are employing as many locals as possible in both head of department and assisting roles together with running a crowd funding campaign to assist with covering some of the production costs.
