Presidents Report Last Thursday we had Tony Atkinson tell us about his life, par-ticularly the period when he served as a footman at Bucking-ham Palace and a waiter at Downing Street. With the assis-tance of co-writer Lyn Smailes, Tony has included these tales, together with those of his later life as a doctor both in the UK and Australia, in a memoir called “My Prescribed Life”. Our next meeting, the last for 2016, will be on Thursday 15th December at the Victoria Golf Club. It will be a part-ners’ night and guests will be very welcome. It will be our Christmas Party complete with games and prizes, a visit from Santa, and a Kris Kringle. So, come along and en-joy a fun night before we take a break. Editor David Lea and I have agreed to make this edition of In Gear the last for this year. The next edition of In Gear will be produced in advance of our first formal meet-ing in 2017, which because Australia Day falls on a Thursday in 2017, will be on Thursday 2nd February 2017. But don’t forget that before then we will be having our an-nual Twilight Golf and Barbecue at the Victoria Golf Club on Wednesday 18th January. Tony Phillips is taking book-ings for this event. May I take this opportunity to wish everyone Seasons Greetings, to thank you all for your efforts in support of Rotary and our club this year, and look forward to joining you in “Rotary Serving Humanity” next year. Yours in Rotary Malcolm

Fellowship Event 13 April 2017

We have reserved a block of seats for The Book of Mormon at the Princess theatre on Thursday 13 April.

We need to pay for the seats by the end of February and will start marketing them early in the new year.

The Book of Mormon, a satirical musical about religion that sold out on Broadway for 180 weeks in a row, is coming to Australia.

The runaway hit will open at Melbourne’s Prin-cess Theatre in early 2017, giving Australian audiences a chance to see the whip smart hu-mour that won the musical nine Tony awards.

Here’s what you need to know.

What’s it about?

The musical follows two young Mormon mis-sionaries, Elder Kevin Prince and Elder Arnold Cunningham, who travel to remote Uganda to share their scriptures.

The village they visit is under the control of a brutal warlord and the locals are far more con-cerned about issues like poverty and AIDS than what the two missionaries have to say.

The musical explores the concept of faith, with creator Matt Stone describing it as “an atheist’s love letter to religion”.

Who wrote it?

If you’re a South Park fan, the biting satire in the musical will seem familiar.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the two men re-sponsible for creating the long-running adult animation, started working on the production in 2003.

Having both grown up in Colorado surrounded by Mormons, or members of The Church of Je-sus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the pair were well-versed in the religion.

The pair workshopped the script with producer friend Scott Rudin and created the music with composer Robert Lopez.

The show premiered on Broadway in March 2011.

What do the critics say?

The New York Times’ Ben Brantley said The Book of Mormon restored his faith in musicals.

“This is to all the doubters and deniers out there, the ones who say that heaven on Broad-way does not exist, that it’s only some myth our ancestors dreamed up,” Brantley wrote.

“I am here to report that a newborn, old-fashioned, pleasure-giving musical has arrived at the Eugene O’Neill Theater, the kind our grandparents told us left them walking on air if not on water.”

The Washington Post’s Peter Marks was simi-larly inspired, writing: “Don’t believe what they say. Money can buy happiness. It’s yours for the price of a ticket to The Book of Mormon.”

This Week’s Speaker: Tony Atkinson

Topic: Royalty, Romance and Medicine

Tony’s co-presenter was Lynn Smailes, who worked with him on his autobiography, A Prescribed Life: Royalty, Ro-mance and Medicine, published by Affirm Press in June 2016. Lynn sent the following words of thanks to us following the presentation. “Many thanks for inviting us to speak at the Beaumaris Rotary meeting last week. We've been made very welcome by all of the Rotary groups we've spoken to in the last few months, but it was clear to us that there is an exceptional sense of collegiali-ty, mutual regard and warmth about the Beaumaris group. It was a privilege to do our presentation in such a lovely venue with such a receptive and cohesive audience.” Tony Atkinson’s life so far has been full of implausible events that happen to be true – and mostly funny. Some of these were the subject of his presentation to Beaumaris Rotary at the Victoria Golf Club on December 8. Tony touched on his early life from 1929, in the house in inner London where his father also practised as a general prac-titioner. As a baby, Tony spent most of his time in a cage sus-pended from a sixth-storey window (photo top right) which provided the solution to two pressing issues – the lack of a backyard to play in and his mother’s passion for fresh air. Despite this, he assured us that he is ‘normal’. While Tony stated that the years between his incarceration as an in-fant and his admission to study medicine in 1947 were no less eventful than his early years, the major part of his presentation focused on the time he spent as an incident-prone waiter for Prime Minister Churchill at 10 Downing Street, and his accidental induction into service as a casu-al footman for the Royal family. The morning after the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, Tony was pictured with the Queen and Prince Philip on the front pages of international newspapers and he shared some of the stories behind the photographs he was pic-tured in, as well as the protocols that dictated life at the palace. Tony’s experiences after he qualified as a general practitioner specialising in anaesthesia, and his recollec-tions of Australia after he immigrated ‘Ten Pound Pom’ in 1962, offered a personal perspective on the recent history of England and Australia in a time of great change.
