One of the benefits of a sluggish economy is its effect on interest rates. Generally, a slower economy means a little to no concern of infla-tion. dropped to their lowest point in decades. Pro-grams exist with rates in the low 3% range. These programs are of-ten referred to as hybrid mortgages, and offer the security of a fixed rate with the flexibility of an adjustable. One such program is the 7/1 ARM. This program has a fixed rate for the first 7 years, and then will convert to a one-year adjust-able thereafter. The

term of the mortgage is 30 years, and can be prepaid at any time without penalty. This program can be perfect for the first time home buyer, or even the so-phisticated investor. Interest rates are more

than 1%lower than a traditional 30 year fixed rate term. This is a savings of over $1,000 annually. There are a number of mortgage programs available that can save a home buyer or home

“Mom didn’t want to go to personal Care ... it was tough! Mom didn’t even want to think about Personal Care. She kept insisting that she could manage. i was tempted to remind her that it was me that took her shopping and to the hairdresser and the doctors appointments and the pharmacy but that really wasn’t the crux of the matter at all. After all she’s done for me, i was happy to help out, to do what i could to help her stay in her home. it was the not knowing that kept me up at night. Not knowing whether she was eating regularly, if she had taken her medication or if she’d fallen or left the stove on. i worried constantly and so did my brother so we started checking in on her more often. Eventu-ally we arranged for home care for a couple of hours every day but no matter what measures we took we couldn’t shake the feeling that she was in a rut and had lost that spark. She seemed to lack direction, sleeping odd hours and staring at the tv seemingly unaware of what she was watching half the time. After a family meeting and no small amount of consternation we agreed to suggest to her that she begin to think about a Personal Care Residence. As you might imagine she wasn’t crazy about the idea. the only concession she would make was that she would at least visit a couple of facilities for ‘future reference.’ the visit to Walden iii was a revelation to her. i can only imagine what she expected to find but what she

did see, people her age engaged in all sorts of activities or talking animatedly at meals, clearly made an impression on her and although she wasn’t ready to ‘sign on’ then and there, the seed had been planted and within a month she agreed to at least give it a try. it’s been positive for everyone involved! With-in a couple of weeks, Mom’s focus shifted from all that she was ‘giving up’ to all that she’s get-ting. the staff and the residents both seemed to understand what a vulnerable time it can be for newcomers and everyone gave her a very warm reception. the residents are a very nice group of people and their desire to want to continue to do as much as they can for themselves was contagious and Mom seemed to get a boost from the start. i think the key to the whole thing is that they’re engaged in life and now thankfully so is Mom. She still won’t say to us that she thinks the move was necessary or that she’s happy to be there but when my brother or i have her home for dinner or a family event at some point during the visit she will invariably inform us that she “should probably be getting home!”

LTRT chose this area to develop as it is within Lehigh Town-ship. The Grand Opening is scheduled for Sat., May 31st with a rain date of Sun., June 1st. It will run from 11 AM until 3 PM. During

this time you can en-joy hot dogs and other food items. Members of Lehigh Township Rails to Trails and the Walnutport Canal As-sociation will be on hand to tell you about the people who had lived and worked at the lock.

The Kettle Creek Wildlife Sanctuary is home to a healthy sal-amander population with several different species present. On Saturday, April 26, 2014, join Environ-mental Education Co-ordinator Roger Spotts for this 90 - minute family program begin-ning at 10 a.m. We’ll be exploring different areas of Kettle Creek Wildlife Sanctuary, looking under rocks and logs as well as in the ponds on the prop-erty for salamanders. After we discover them we will return all of the salamanders back to their natural habitat. We will also discuss how to safe-ly handle these small and slimy creatures for the benefit of both the salamanders and the participants. As the oil cools from engine operating tem-perature, the 5W-40 will thicken less than the 15W-40. The small-er the first number of the viscosity, the better the fluid flows when cold. Depending on the age of your engine, older diesel engines may see a slight in-crease in oil consump-tion with lighter oil. • Do you need to adjust the viscosi-ty of your oil based on where you live? Sometimes. The way you use your vehi-cle is also a factor. In general, many auto manufacturers rec-ommend an “all tem-perature” viscosity.

Your owner’s manual will indicate which “all temperature” oil is recommended for your vehicle and loca-tion. • What about pre-mium oil filters? It’s a good idea to use a pre-mium oil filter in tan-dem which a synthetic oil. Oil filters prevent contaminants from circulting through the system, causing damage. Premium oil filters offer superior filtration media and internal and structural components made of high quality material. If you’re consider-ing purchasing a die-sel vehicle, don’t for-get that maintaining the vehicle is key.

Society News

Recently, the annual basket social was held at the LT Fire Com-pany in Cherryville. Thanks to everyone who helped, donated items and supported

the event. On Sunday, May 4, the society will hold a Grand Opening of the completed Lehigh Township Historical Centre Addition. The event will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. You are invited to attend. There will be tours, door prizes, light re-freshments, and a sou-venir given to visitors. Check out the items available for sale and buy one of our new t-shirts or hats.
