SERVING OPPORTUNITIES
2014
This catalog is designed to show you the many opportunities available to serve inside and outside the walls of Brentwood United Methodist Church.
Look inside to find opportunities INSIDE the walls of BUMC like teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir, knitting prayer shawls, replenishing the pews.
You will also find opportunities to serve God OUTSIDE the walls of BUMC like building a Habitat House, going on a mission trip, mentoring a child at Harvest Hands.
No matter what your gifts, available time, or passions, there’s a place for you to serve.
Here’s how to find your place:• Take a few minutes to complete the Spiritual Gifts assessment at the front of the catalog or complete an on-line assessment at www.bumc.net/spiritualgifts• Browse the opportunities listed in the catalog• Identify the opportunities that tug at your heart or spark your interest• Fill out the enclosed commitment card, and mail your card to the
church office: 309 Franklin Road Brentwood, TN 37027 or complete your card on-line any time at www.bumc.net/serving.
After you’ve turned in your commitment card or completed it on-line, you will be contacted by a staff person or lay leader in the area(s) you’ve indicated. They will help you get involved.
May God bless you as you find that place where service and joy intersect.

The Bible tells us that God gives every Christian spiritual gifts to be used to benefit
others (1 Corinthians 12:7). When we serve using our gifts, we discover joy, meaning and
fulfillment. We discover our perfect fit. How do you know what spiritual gift you’ve been given?
Try the exercise below to help you find out.
Listed below are 16 gifts identified in Scripture that are often used in service to others. Under each gift’s name is a word or phrase that indicates its contribution to the church along with a list of words that are often descriptive of people having that gift. If five or more words on a list are true of you, you may have received that gift.
To further explore the gifts you may have, ask one or more Christian friends or family
members who know you well to do the same process for you, without knowing your
answers, or you may take an on-line assessment at www.bumc.net/spiritualgifts.

Read through the descriptions of the Spiritual Gifts for which you circled five or more descriptors. Prayerfully consider how God asks you to use these gifts in service to others and for the glory of God.
DEFINITION OF YOUR SPIRITUAL GIFTS
ADMINISTRATION ability to organize and manage information, people, events, and resources, to accomplish the objectives of a ministry.
APOSTLESHIP ability to build a foundation of new churches by preaching the Word, teaching others to live by Christ’s command-
ments through the example of their own lives, and preparing people to serve one another. People with this gift enthusiastically approach new ministries, churches or settings, and realize the need to adapt methods of evangelism and service to widely different environments.
DISCERNMENT ability to recognize what God is and what God is not - to distinguish between good and evil, truth and error, and pure
and impure motives.
EVANGELISM ability to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ so that unknowing persons respond in faith and discipleship. People with this gift speak comfortably about their faith.
EXHORTATION ability to encourage, help, intercede for, and to be an advocate for another in a way that motivates others to grow in their faith and urges them to action.
FAITH ability to recognize what God wants done and to act when others fall back in doubt. Even in the face of barriers that overwhelm oth-ers, people with this gift simply know that God will see it done.
GIVING ability to give material wealth freely and joyfully, knowing that spiritual wealth will abound as God’s work is advanced. People with this gift usually manage their finances well, may have a special ability to make money, and tend to limit their lifestyle.
HEALING ability to bring wholeness, physical, emotional, or spiritual, to others.
HELPS/SERVICE ability to work alongside others in performing practical and often behind-the-scenes tasks to sustain and enhance the Body of Christ. A person with this gift receives spiritual satisfaction from doing the everyday necessary tasks.
KNOWLEDGE ability to understand, organize and effectively use informa-tion to advance God’s purpose. People with this gift enjoy studying the Bible and other sources to gain facts, insights, and truths. They use this
information for projects, ministries or teaching and organize it in order to pass it on for other people’s use and benefit.
LEADERSHIP ability to motivate, coordinate and direct people in doing God’s work. People with this gift are visionaries who inspire others to work together to make the vision a reality.
MERCY ability to see and feel the suffering of others and to minister to them with love and understanding. More simply, this gift is compas-sion moved to action.
PROPHECY ability to proclaim God’s truth in a way that makes it relevant to current situations and to envision how God would want things to change.
PASTOR/TEACHER ability to guide, protect, and care for other Christians as they experience spiritual growth. People with this gift enjoy working with groups of people and nurturing their growth over an extended period of time.
TEACHING divine ability to understand and clearly explain God’s truths, and to show how we can apply them to our lives. People with this gift enjoy studying the Bible and inspire listeners to greater obedience to God’s word.

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of
services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities,
but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone.
To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

For just as the body is one and has many members,
and all the members of the body, though many, are one body,
so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body
— Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many.

I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect.
