A mid-September Cubs game knocking on the playoffs’ door is an ideal time to visit the ‘Friendly Confines.’ Wrigley Field was waiting as the Open Door and Kendall County Special

She-sheds and man-caves are quite the rage, but what would you call a senior clubhouse? Would it be a Baby Boomer Bungalow? An Elder Hut? Club ODDO? OK, so we have a ways to go on that front, but when the funding is met, oh boy do we have plans for our Saucy Seniors!

The aim is to reconfigure walls at the East workshop and hopefully have enough for a kitchen so that our Saucy Seniors have a quiet, homelike atmosphere reminiscent of their youth. Gina G. said that “a clubhouse is a good idea so we can do our own thing.” In consideration that food and eating continue to be the top of the meeting minutes, the ultimate shoot-for-the-moon goal is to incorporate a kitchen so the group can cook their favorite foods.

Saucy Seniors are people at Open Door who are 60 and over and who enjoy meeting at Dunkin’ Donuts to share stories, brainstorm on activities and work on planning out what to include in the future clubhouse. So far the Saucy Seniors have been pretty clear as to what they want it to contain: coffee (hot cocoa for Karen L.), newspapers, soft couches, a craft area, good music, and vintage décor. “I want to be able to put my feet up,” Lauren B. adds.

Even without a clubhouse, the Saucy Seniors have been quite busy. In recent months they saw Kenny Rogers in concert, went to a show called “Strolling Down Broadway” and enjoyed a trolley, boat, and lunch tour of Starved Rock. Evelyne S. asked to add that “I just thought you might want to know that I like it very much.” There are no plans of slowing down with these Saucy Seniors; we bet all will have a lot of fun when they get their cool clubhouse built just for them!

Who doesn’t love a party… good food and good times with family and friends? All of us at Open Door are no exception. Traditionally, Open Door would host an annual summertime picnic for all of our family and friends. But over the years, we have been exceptionally blessed, and our Open Door Family has grown so much that it is difficult to accommodate all of us at one time. So we decided to try something completely different and plan smaller, more intimate parties and host them at our homes. An additional benefit is that we can more easily involve the individuals served and their families in the entire process. And if the individuals served can learn a little about party planning, decorating, and food preparation along the way, all the better. You may ask, “How did it all work out?” Well, we think the pictures speak for themselves. We need to give a huge THANK YOU to all of our family and friends who made these parties possible. It is through your continued love and support that we can pull something like this off... and the memories made are priceless!

Your Votes Yielded BIG RESULTS

Open Door representatives expressed their gratitude to the Sandwich Indian Football Team and Sandwich High School by presenting staff with a framed thank-you picture. For the third consecutive year, these organizations have sponsored an event they call “Blackout,” where during a home football game, everyone is asked to wear a pre-purchased Blackout T-shirt. This year, Open Door was presented with a check for over $1,500. Thank you, Sandwich Indians, for the generous donation and for the VIP treatment at the football game!

Thank you to SHS faculty, staff, students and community!

Open Door won third place in the First National Bank Community First Awards Facebook contest. These funds will go toward updating a bathroom that is utilized by eight Open Door residents, seven of whom rely on wheelchairs. Thanks to EVERYONE who took the time to vote during this contest, and to First National Bank and their incredible team, for being such outstanding Open Door supporters. Thank you!
