Edge Hill University

Edge Hill University, located in Ormskirk, Lancashire, hasbeen providing higher education for more than 125 yearson an award – winning campus, which has seeninvestment of over £180m in the last decade. Recentdevelopments have included the £13m Student Hub(Opposite), newly developed Arts Centre, and 25 acresports complex. Further £200m expansion plans will seeeven better teaching, learning and living resources forfuture students.

Shortlisted for the Times Higher UK University of the Year2011, 2010 and 2007, we offer an excellent studentexperience, with a strong focus on preparing students forthe job market, ensuring students graduate with the skillsand knowledge to stand out in a competitive job market.

Faculty of Arts and Sciences All our programmes are designed to give students subjectspecific knowledge and a range of transferable life skillswhich will give students an edge in the competitive globaljob market. An increasing number of our programmes arerecognised by professional bodies, and some have industryplacements or work based learning built into them. Recentinvestment in facilities have included the £16 millionCreative Edge Building, home to the Animation, Computing,and Media Departments.

Faculty of EducationThe Faculty of Education achieved Grade 1 `Outstanding`results across all 33 areas covered by the Ofsted InitialTeacher Training Inspection, 2011, and is the largestprovider of teacher training in the country. Programmesare delivered in a £9 million purpose-built lakesidebuilding, while support offered by staff is personalised andhigh quality.

Faculty of Health and Social CareThe Faculty is one of the main providers of education forhealthcare professionals in the North West, while our £14million purpose-built accommodation houses some of thebest facilities for health and social care students in thecountry.

The Education Liaison and Events Team

The Education Liaison and Events Team at Edge Hill Universitywork with schools and colleges across the UK to deliver engagingand informative presentations, workshops, and on campus visits.The team works mainly with Year 12 students, but are happy todiscuss ideas and requests for working with groups from Year 9upwards.

The team works with schools and colleges to design and deliveractivities to assist students at all stages of the education decisionmaking process:

• Making GCSE, A Level and BTEC decisions• Introducing the benefits of Higher Education • Choosing a Course, Institution and the Student Experience • Advising on processes such as UCAS, Personal Statement writing, and Student Finance.

In addition to working with students, the team have extensiveexperience in working with parents and teachers/careers advisers,and are happy to attend INSET or twilight events accordingly.

The Education Liaison and Events Team have a wealth ofexperience in school liaison activity, and aim to provide impartialand timely information, advice and guidance at all times. Eachmember of the team is advanced DBS checked, and all are activemembers of the Higher Education Liaison Officers Association(HELOA) the professional body overseeing university work withprospective students and their advisers, more information ofwhich can be found at: www.heloa.ac.uk.

Post 16 Activities

The Education Liaison and Events Team are here to help students with their HEdecision making. We offer impartial information, advice and guidance on a rangeof topics such as the UCAS application process, and Student Finance.

Campus Visits Throughout the year we welcome a large number of Sixth Form and Collegestudents onto campus, either as part of their Higher Education preparation, orfor Subject Conferences and Academic Enrichment opportunities. Visiting arange of universities is an invaluable experience for students, as it enables themto develop a more in–depth understanding of the variety of institutions andcourses available to them as potential Higher Education students.

The team have extensive experience in organising campus visits, ranging fromsmall cohorts of students, to entire year groups. Campus visit programmes aretailored around individual school or college requirements but typically include:

• An overview of the benefits of Higher Education• Guidance for undertaking initial course research• Student Experience (Delivered by a current Edge Hill University student)• Presentations on topics such as UCAS and Student Finance • Workshops on topics such as Personal Statements and Budgeting

Visiting students will also tour the university campus, and by meeting currentundergraduate students who work with us during on campus events, studentscan literally see the potential for experiences and personal development, ratherthan simply reading about it in a prospectus. Subject Specific Activities Subject specific activities may be delivered by academic staff, either on or offcampus, subject to staff availability. We would ask in the first instance that youcontact the Education Liaison Officer responsible for your area. Throughout theyear we offer a series of Subject Conferences aimed at Year 12 students, detailsof which are on page 9.

Subject Conferences

Throughout the year the Education Liaison and Events Team organise a rangeof Subject Conferences and Academic Enrichment opportunities for post 16students across a range of subject areas.

Subject Conferences are aimed primarily towards AS level / first year collegestudents. These days are designed to give students an insight into studying aparticular subject or field at a higher level, and typically involve a mixture ofinformative lectures and practical opportunities. These conferences also includean opportunity to speak to current undergraduate students, and to see thecampus and facilities. All conferences are offered free of charge.

Details of upcoming conferences will be sent (via post and electronically) to keycontacts within schools / colleges approximately 6 weeks prior to the conference.Conferences are held throughout the year, typically during October, November,March, April and June. Timings vary by event, but usually run 10:00am to3:00pm. Please note that our conferences are very popular, so please book early to avoiddisappointment. Each conference will have a maximum capacity, with someconferences having a limited number of places available per school or college.Places are confirmed once we are in receipt of a full list of delegates names, anda signed Service Level Agreement.

10Academic Enrichment

Academic Enrichment events take place throughout the year, and are aimedprimarily towards AS/first year college students, although A2 and second yearstudents are welcome to attend. Academic enrichment events will focus on aparticular topic, and content has been mapped across that of the major examboards AQA, Edexcel and OCR. It is envisaged that these enrichment sessionswill support and encourage students’ learning, alongside classroom teaching.Details of upcoming academic enrichment sessions will be sent (via post andelectronically) to key contacts within schools/colleges approximately 6 weeksprior to the event.

General Studies/Critical Thinking Subject to staff availability, Edge Hill University are able to offer lectures andworkshops tailored around specific areas of the General Studies and CriticalThinking syllabus. Please contact the Education Liaison Officer responsible foryour region to discuss this further.

The Arts CentreThroughout the year The Arts Centre offer a series of cinema and theatreshowings which may relate to A level/BTEC sylabi. The Arts Centre events areoffered at a discounted price (or free) for school group bookings. Campus toursand supporting talks and/or workshops can be arranged alongside such eventsas requested. Higher Education/Careers Fairs

The Education Liaison and Events Team, along with a small pool of fully trainedStudent Ambassadors are able to attend a range of daytime and twilight`marketplace` events organised by individual schools/colleges such as HE andCareers Fairs. Typically attended by post 16 students, we are able to offerinformation on our course provision, entry requirements and student experience.

The team are also able to attend targeted Sixth Form Open Evenings, aimed atstudents in years 10 and 11, offering advice and guidance on post 16 studyoptions and university admissions.

UCAS ConventionsYou can meet us at all conventions across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.The UCAS conventions will be attended by members of the Education Liaisonand Events Team and/or members of the Student Ambassador team. 12School/College Open Day

The university will hold an undergraduate Open Day on Friday 20th June2014, which is specifically for school/college groups. This day will provideopportunities to tour the university campus and accommodation, as well as tospeak to academic tutors, and support services including the Students’ Union,Inclusion Team and Student Financial Advice.

Upcoming Open DaysThe university hold a series of Saturday Open Days which you may wish toadvertise to your students. Upcoming Open Days are:

Year 12 Residential Visits

The Education Liaison and Events Team are able to offer opportunities forspecific cohorts of students to experience life on campus during the course ofsummer residential visits.

The Year 12 Residential programme will run across four days (three nights) inJuly 2014. A wide range of subject areas will be taking part, with students ableto select one subject area to focus on. All residential attendees will have accessto the University Library and IT network for the duration of the residential.Evening activities (some compulsory and some optional) will run each night,and students will stay in halls of residence, to experience life as an undergraduatestudent. Current Edge Hill University undergraduate students will be on handthroughout the residential, offering support and guidance where necessary.

Places are fully funded by the university, and those interested in attending arerequired to submit an application form, consisting of a short ‘personal statement’and education history, which will be used in the selection process.

As this residential event takes place during the summer holidays, students mustenquire and apply individually. Details of the residential will be sent (via postand electronically) to key contacts within schools/colleges in due course, anddisplayed on our website edgehill.ac.uk/studentrecruitment.

Twilight Presentations and Events

Throughout the year the Education Liaison and Events Team attend numeroustwilight events, for example delivering informal presentations on a range oftopics to parents/guardians, as well as attending evening HE/Careers Fairs.

Twilight PresentationsEach year the team are invited into schools and colleges to deliver informativetwilight presentations to parents and guardians on a range of topics. Topicsfrequently requested include Student Finance, an overview of Higher Educationand UCAS, and GCSE/Post 16 Options. If you are interested in arranging atwilight presentation, please contact the Education Liaison Officer responsiblefor your region, or email [email protected].

The Education Liaison and Events Team value establishing and maintainingrelationships with Teachers, Sixth Form/College Staff and Careers Advisers.Each year Edge Hill University offer a number of engaging and topicalopportunities for staff regarding the changes to the sector, as well as ContinuingProfessional Development (CPD) opportunities, as detailed below:

Annual Teachers and Advisers ConferenceThe Annual Teachers and Advisers Conference takes place in May each year, isfree to attend, and regularly attracts a significant number of delegates fromacross the UK. The conference offers an opportunity to learn about sectorchanges, attend workshops delivered by sector experts, and network withcolleagues in similar roles. A full programme will be sent (via post andelectronically) to key contacts within schools/colleges approximately6 weeks prior to the conference, and will be displayed online atedgehill.ac.uk/studentrecruitment. Policy Unwrapped Policy Unwrapped is a series of termly sessions aimed at those who work in aneducation setting and is designed to provide an impartial commentary on thepurpose and impact of higher education policy. With expert opinion, insightfulcomment and valuable networking opportunities, Policy Unwrapped is a mustfor those who want to stay abreast of sector developments and support theirstudents in HE decision making. Registration and arrival refreshments takesplaces from 4.30pm, with the Policy Unwrapped session from 5.30pm, followedby an informal evening meal. Recent Policy Unwrapped evenings have focussedon Changes to Initial Teacher Training and The Future of Information, Adviceand Guidance.

Open Evenings/Professional Development Edge Hill University’s Faculty of Education offers a broad range of opportunitiesfor qualified and unqualified members of the school workforce through staffCPD, including Early Years Teacher Status, and Professional Developmentmodules. By road via the M6, off at junction 26, then onto the M58, off at junction 3, taking theA570 towards Southport and Ormskirk. The campus can also be reached from Prestonor Liverpool via the A59.

By rail from Liverpool Central to Ormskirk station on Merseyrail's Northern Line orPreston to Ormskirk station on Northern Rail.

The Edgelink bus service runs at 15 minute intervals from Ormskirk bus station toEdge Hill and back throughout the day, 8:15 to 17:50 Monday to Saturday, excludingBank Holidays.
