Annual Conference Review

Once again I had the pleasure of being your representative at the Annual

Western North Carolina Conference on June 11-12. This year at conference

was all about changes to OUR conference. Yes, preachers are leaving their old

churches and are moving on to new ones, but this was not the only change.

First of all, conference was only two days instead of the regular three

days. Also, only voting delegates were allowed in the Stuart Auditorium. All

others were allowed to watch the meetings on television all over the grounds.

One of the big topics of the weekend was voting on moving the Western

North Carolina Conference meeting to another city and leaving Lake

Junaluska. All over the Maggie Valley and Waynesville area restaurants,

stores, and hotels had on their marquee KEEP THE WESTERN NORTH

CAROLINA CONFERENCE IN LAKE JUNALUSKA. All the local residents

and many of the preachers and lay representatives were very concerned about

the conference meetings being moved to Greensboro, North Carolina. Greens-

boro seemed to have more to offer than Lake Junaluska. On Saturday, June 12

at 5:30 pm, the voting representatives voted down the idea and the conference

will remain at Lake Junaluska.

Also, the topic of financially supporting our five universities and col-

leges in our conference was discussed and only High Point University, Bre-

vard College, and Bennett College were affected by not receiving any money

for their students in our conference. Pfeiffer University and Greensboro Col-

lege amounts will be decreased by 25 percent annually over the next four years

to ease the burden on their budgets during the phasing out of conference dol-

lars.

Bishop Janie Riggle Huie discussed and showed a video about Impact

Community and the Rethink Church campaign. Bishop Huie discussed how

the campaign has helped transform areas from Asheboro, North Carolina to the

mountains of North Carolina.

In closing, it was a wonderful weekend for my family and me as we

spent time seeing our close friends we see each year at conference and feeling

the presence of God’s Work.

Music Week 2010 – Lake Junaluska - June 20-25

The theme for Music Week was “We are many. We are one. We are the

body of Christ.” We had a worship service Sunday night and Monday –

Friday mornings. Our worship at Music Week always uses new hymns,

drama, dance, and colorful backgrounds. The main idea was even though we are many people from

28 states and represent many churches, we are all the body of Christ. We had communion twice, re-

newed our baptism, and used a modern version of the Wesley Covenant Service during our week.

Paul’s letter to the church at Corinth was the scripture used for the worship services.

After the worship services, we had a two hour rehearsal. I sang in the adult choir, which had 230

members. Susannah and Lindsay Grimmett sang in the middle school chorus, which was the largest

choir they had ever had with 160 singers. The high school choir had 130 members. They also had

handbell choirs, drama troops, instrumental, and dance ensembles. There were seminars in the after-

noon and performances at night. The highlights were the Tuesday night youth talent show, which

was great, and the Thursday night choral groups concert.

In my adult choir, we sang a piece from the 1500s in Latin, a big fanfare and hymn arrangement, a

John Rutter modern piece, a Gospel style piece, a big joyful song with brass choir, and a piece written

by our conductor, Randy Hooper. Dr. Hooper is the director of choral activities at Texas A and M

University. His piece was extremely difficult. It was about the day of Pentecost, and had singing,

chanting, speaking, narrators, and handbells in his anthem. When the narrator said that the apostles

began speaking in different languages, the sopranos sang in German, the altos in French, the basses in

Spanish, and the lucky tenors in English – all at the same time! WHEW! When we performed it, it

was very effective, but it was hard getting it ready!

One of the mountaintop experiences for me came as we sang “And Are We Yet Alive” with a very

different, calypso beat accompanied by piano, guitar, and percussion instruments at Wednesday’s

worship service. The worship leader said in introduction that if anyone felt like dancing during this

hymn to feel free to do it. By the third verse, some of the teenagers started a conga line down the

aisles. It was cute, but it was certainly not moving – until I saw people in the line that were in their

seventies dancing with the teenagers. It was GREAT! (Before you ask, none of us joined the line!)

It was meaningful for me to see this intergenerational spontaneous display!

The other experience came for me during our concert. The adults always sing first, because it is so

difficult for us to get all our people on and off the risers. We just practice last and stay on the risers

until we perform. Singing with over 200 people, all singing praises to God in 8 parts with a brass

choir is a thrilling experience for any musician. The middle and high school choirs sang their pieces

from memory! It was a great experience for Susannah and Lindsay. I was also blessed to have my

Mom and Dad experience Music Week with me.

I loved being on the mountain top, and like Peter, James, and John, I had to

come back to everyday life. I will try to keep my “mountain glow” with me

as I plan worship with Stuart for us at AUMC every Sunday. I’ll see you in

church!

Keep the faith.

Dear Church Family, Thank you for celebrating my recent graduation from Trinity High School and for the devotion book. It means a lot to have the love and support of AUMC. I can’t believe high school is over, but I look forward to attending college. I ask that you keep me in your thoughts and prayers as I move to the next level.

Sincerely, Andrew McGavic
